HTC unveils VIVE Focus VR headset for China alongside new dev platform, cancels Daydream plans

Google tried to create some buzz for its Daydream VR platform at its I/O developer conference back in May, even though public appetite for the tech seems to be waning. Standalone headsets were announced as the next evolution of the Daydream experience, but since then it's all gone rather quiet. We now know that HTC has canceled its plans to release a standalone Daydream headset, and is instead concentrating its efforts on China with a different standalone headset and development platform.

Google Daydream View (2017) is now available from Google Store in France, Italy, and Spain for €109

The new Daydream View VR headset went on sale here in 'Murica around two weeks ago. But products like these tend to have a little delay in availability in overseas countries, as evidenced by the Pixel 2 XL only having gone on sale in Italy and Spain three days ago. Now, the 2017 model of the Daydream View is up for grabs in those two countries, as well as France, for €109.

Just in time for Halloween, Warner Bros. has released 'IT: Escape from Pennywise VR'

IT: Escape from Pennywise VR is a new Daydream virtual reality experience that directly ties into the newest movie adaptation of Stephen King's IT. But that's not all. This appears to be Warner Bros. second VR experience for IT, where the first episode IT: FLOAT - A Cinematic VR Experience was released for free on a few different video VR streaming services back in August. Why these releases are not both on Android I am unsure, but I suppose it is a way to monetize what started out as a free promotional tool since IT: Escape from Pennywise VR is priced at $0.99.

Daydream now lets you cast to a big screen and share your experience with others [APK Download]

Back at I/O in May, Google teased the Daydream 2.0 update, codenamed Euphrates, which would bring a more social aspect to using the VR platform by casting what the user sees on another screen. Daydream 2.0 isn't ready just yet, but the latest update to version 1.10.170912063 already has that capability, as well as support for the 2nd generation View headset and the new Pixel 2 phones.

Google announces a slightly better Daydream View for slightly more money

With these two new Pixels announced, it would appear that we need a new Daydream View to go with them. It's the same Daydream View we've known and loved for the last year — with the same name, even — but including a small number of improvements. The all-new Daydream View has better lenses, new materials, and three new colors. And, it's even got a new (higher) price. The new headset will set you back a slightly-increased $99.

You can now use Daydream to browse the web in VR with Chrome

Google added an experimental version of WebVR to Chrome as far back as version 56 earlier in the year, and there were a handful of sample web pages you could take a look at to test out the various features. Since then, more demos have been added and other uses have also been toyed with, including the interesting VR short-film, Tabel. In a recent AMA, the Chrome team said they were re-working WebVR, and it seems as though that job is done.

Google's new Daydream View will be covered in fabric and cost $99

Google launched the Daydream View headset last year alongside the Pixel. For a time, it was only the Pixel that had support for Google's VR. There are a few more phones now, and there's about to be a revamped VR headset, according to a leak from DroidLife. See above for the new Daydream View, which looks a lot like the old one.

Galaxy Note8 should be compatible with Daydream from Day 1

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ took their sweet time to get a software update that would enable Daydream compatibility, but it appears that won't be the case for Samsung's latest and hottest flagship, the Note8.

According to a Samsung spokesperson who talked to NieuweMobiel, Daydream support will be enabled out of the box for the Note8 so you won't have to wait months for any software update to let you slip that shiny phone into your Daydream headset and turn it into a window for VR content... and probably be one of the test subjects for the new Note's capacity to not burst into flames when overheated.
