An unnamed source at Boy Genius Report today provided a tip that Verizon is planning to begin its 4G LTE network rollout in 25 markets on November 15th, 2010. Some interesting details emerged from the tip - most of them good. To summarize:

  • 4G LTE data plans will be tiered by data caps, but will not add a premium to your bill. Presumably this means the caps will be combined 3G/4G usage (you listening, Sprint/EVO/$10?).

Another week, another Google update for the Nexus One, both for users already running Froyo and unrooted Eclair on both AT&T and T-Mobile!

I’ve installed the update from FRF83 (500K) on my own Nexus One, and installation was smooth, as always.

It is unknown what the update brings and whether it will be the last one before we see the final official Eclair>Froyo update.

Download

You can download the update here if you didn't get the OTA yet:

  • T-Mobile Nexus One: FRF83 > FRF85B (500KB)
  • AT&T Nexus One: EPE54B > FRF85B (46.5MB) - this will update your stock unrooted Eclair 2.1 AT&T Nexus One to Froyo!

Obtaining Your Droid X Live Wallpaper

A savvy XDA forum user has taken the initiative to decompile the Droid X’s live wallpapers and provide them to the Android masses. At the moment, 6 live wallpapers of the Droid X “Eye” are available on the thread - 5 from the phone and 1 modified by one of the forum members. Links for each below:

Installing

To install your Droid X Eye live wallpaper, simply

  • download one of the .apk’s linked above straight from your phone's browser and click on it to install or
  • move it to your phone from your computer, open using Astro File Manager or another install-capable file manager, and select install

Once installed, the Droid X wallpaper is selected like any other live wallpaper:

  • go to your home screen
  • hit the settings key
  • select wallpapers > live wallpapers
  • the installed .apk should appear as “DROID X.”

The wallpapers should be installable on any 2.1 or 2.2 Android device, with or without root.

Droid X's Sexy Software Keyboard Ripped Out, Now Available For All Phones

Earlier today we reported that the Droid X internals were leaked out and provided to developers to play with. It didn't take long at all - Droid X's software keyboard is already available for everyone to download.

This keyboard should work for any Android phone running 2.1 Eclair (it reportedly force closes for most on Froyo). It looks very clean, mostly due to the absence of most non-alphanumeric characters which can be accessed using a familiar looking button on the bottom left.

This is a short PSA for those of you who are xda-developers forum fans. I know there are quite a few, considering xda is leading the poll in this post Android Forum Roundup: Where Do You Go For Android Help And Discussion? Vote For Your Favorites.

Xda forum admins have been working on a new skin, to bring an updated look to a relatively mediocre (though so familiar) looking skin.

Android Forum Roundup: Where Do You Go For Android Help And Discussion? Vote For Your Favorites
Last Updated: July 11th, 2010

Where do you go when you have an Android related problem? Where do you hang out on a rainy day? Where does a good percentage of Android news originate from?

I'm talking about Android forums. Today, inspired by this reddit post, I wanted to highlight some of them and provide a list for people looking to ask questions, start an Android related conversation, report a problem, or just become part of another community (of course, you should always be close to Android Police by following us on twitter at @AndroidPolice and keeping up with the RSS feed).

Froyo FRF72

Discovery

Good thing for our readers that I’m a night owl, and I happen to love my Nexus One, and love me some frozen yogurt. Especially together:

Nexus One with Froyo

And now I have my T-Mobile Nexus One updated with the latest and greatest FRF72 build.

I just happened to be browsing a forum about the upcoming official Android 2.2 Froyo release when I see someone leak a URL for the FRF72 build that Google Employees were given a week ago.

This SysAdmin Series article will cover four of my favorite tools as a sysadmin: two for analyzing network information, and one each for doing DNS lookups and Whois lookups on domain names. As with most apps I cover in my SysAdmin Series articles, I need to fully uninstall the app and wipe all prior data before demonstrating it here for you to protect my employer in case there’s any sensitive information lurking about.

First off, my apologies for the late posting in the SysAdmin series (or very early since tomorrow is Thursday). I had to deal with a double HDD failure on my home PC this weekend which ate up 14+ waking hours between Saturday night and all day Sunday, which would have been my prime writing time. Then the third HDD in that system crashed Monday evening, egad, what are the odds. I digress…

I've been looking for an easy way recently to manage configuration files for remote servers without having to deal with subversion, and even looked at some sort of file sync with Evernote/Dropbox via Android using an FTP client, but neither Evernote or Dropbox give you easy access to files on your SD storage when you download files.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed most of the world has been focusing their attention on the 2010 World Cup, which officially started yesterday. We know many of you would love to be able to watch the matches on you phone while you’re out and about, so we’ve put together a few ways that this can be done.

One of the really cool things about the World Cup games this year is that so many sites are streaming them live, for free, making it pretty easy to catch a match wherever you’re at as long as you have high speed internet and access to a computer.
