[Review] ASUS Eee Pad Slider: Heap Another Honeycomb Tablet Onto The Pile, Albeit One With A Trick Keyboard

When we first saw ASUS' Eee Pad Slider at CES, we very nearly dismissed it at once. It was thick, tablets with physical keyboards showed no sign of gaining popularity, and Honeycomb had yet to come out of the woodwork. Besides, ASUS' own cheaper, slimmer Transformer had already caught our hearts. Our confidence was not raised by the long period of silence that followed - in fact, the only Slider-related posts we've written since January are an unofficial hands-on by a Romanian blog and the announcement of the slate's pricing.

Nevertheless, the Slider is, at least on paper, easily in the top tier of Honeycomb tablets - in addition to its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, it has one of those legendary IPS displays, coupled with a full-size USB 2.0 port and a comparatively low price tag of $475.

Modern smartphones and tablets are, without a doubt, multifunctional devices made to replace those that serve only a single purpose --gaming devices, mp3 players, and, in some cases, even laptops are all covered under the smartphone/tablet umbrella. As such, it's no surprise that I spend almost as much time playing games on my Tab 10.1 as I do other, more productive things.

However, one of my biggest complaints about gaming on a touch-only device is the controls. I hate touch controls. They're awkward, uncomfortable, and all-around difficult in most cases. The fact that I'm heavy handed doesn't help, either -- I'm always afraid of damaging my device during an intense gaming session.

Every once in a while, an app comes along that revolutionizes the Android experience in an unimaginable way. More often, though, we get apps that simply regurgitate the same thing we've seen a thousand times before but with a different colored title bar or some such minor adjustment. A happy medium between the two, however, is necessary to the advancement of the platform. Perhaps the most important type of app is one that provides the functionality that we've been using the whole time but solidly improves how it is done. Car Tunes is just that type of application.

Car Tunes is one of the simplest apps I've ever seen.

Zimperium Finally Releases 'Anti' For Android, Allows You To Use Penetration Testing Tools On The Go

The days where penetration testers carry around laptops with them to test the security of networks seem to be numbered, with Zimperium's 'Anti' bringing a lot of those tools over from the PC to Android smartphones.

It's been a long time coming, but Anti is now available to download to your phone for free from the Zimperium website. For some strange reason, you will have to install 'AntiCredit' from the Android Market in order to actually use the application effectively by buying credits, meaning that you will have two apps which, essentially, perform the same function.

After you have downloaded and installed Anti from the web (you will first need to enable the installation of 3rd party applications by going to Settings > Applications > Unknown sources), you are prompted to buy AntiCredits in order to actually use many of the features within the app.

I already know what you're thinking: Are they really reviewing a stylus? Aren't all styluses (or styli, if you prefer) the same? Here's the short answer to the latter: No, they're not.

I have a few different styluses, and I can definitely confirm that using each of them is a different experience. Each one has a different feel, texture, and -- what really sets them apart from one another -- weight. For this review I will focus on the Griffin Stylus/Pen/Laser Pointer, but may throw in the occasional reference to my other two styluses -- a Targus stylus and SGP Kuel stylus -- just for comparison.

Before we get rolling with this review, I want to get one thing out in the open: I don't like cases. On any of my devices. They add bulk, restrict access to certain elements of the hardware (in some situations), and are just all around inconvenient. Honestly -- what's the point of having one of the thinnest tablets (or phones) on the planet just so you can fatten it up with a case? It basically just ruins the entire experience.

Or so I thought.

Then I got my hands on the Ultra Capsule Case by SGP for the Tab 10.1. If a product ever existed to change my mind about an entire genre of accessories, this is the one.

[New Game Review] Jelly Defense Adds A Whimsical Twist To Tower Defense

Tower Defense is probably one of the most populated genres in mobile gaming, or at least it seems that way. There are tons of games in this style to choose from, so it's rare to see something that changes things. Jelly Defense from Infinite Dreams attempts just that, putting a whimsical, almost cute touch on the genre of tower defense.

The game starts off with a brief intro story about the peaceful nation of jelly inhabitants in which the game takes place. Suddenly alien invaders arrive, and the player is given the charge of defending the jelly people's crystals. Right off the bat, the visual style and animation made me think of the popular Katamari series, especially when a colorful, blocky spaceship (ostensibly powered by rowing oars) zoomed into frame.

[Review] Logitech Keyboard Case Increases Productivity Without Ruining Your Tab 10.1's Portability

Before giving Logitech's Keyboard Case a go, I was skeptical about how useful a separate keyboard would be for my Galaxy Tab 10.1. My main concern about keyboards in general was portability - I picked up the Galaxy Tab 10.1 because of its slim design, easy portability, and Android functionality, so carrying around a bulky accessory was out of the question, as it seemed to defeat the purpose.

Logitech and Zagg have created perhaps the most elegant solution to this problem that I've seen yet with the Keyboard Case. It's not only a capable, useful keyboard, but also functions as a case, integrating nicely with the portability of the Tab itself.

At A Glance

XtraSEC is certainly a lightweight app, housing most of its power in the app's online interface. XtraSEC comes in both free and paid flavors. The free version lacks Remote Locking, Data Wipe, Battery Info and on demand SIM information, but the paid version comes in at a modest $1.99/year. The app's design is straight-forward, and the online interface is convenient and intuitive, offering up all your options in only a couple of screens.
