Here's A First Look At The ViewSonic 22" Android Smart Display, And It's Kinda Nice

We heard just recently that ViewSonic was launching a 22" tablet/display running Android. Today, we get a look at this display. We've also learned that it's running a dual-core TI-OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0, and a 1920x1080 display underneath the gargantuan screen. The demo seems to be targeted at being used in a classroom setting, with plenty of child-friendly apps and videos, but that's just bundled software. The display, which starts at $479, could be used by any budget-conscious consumer that wants to try using Android instead of Windows as their primary OS for a shared family device.

ViewSonic, a leader in making affordable gadgets, have intro'd yet another entry level tablet: the ViewPad E70. Under its hood, the 7-inch E70 screams budget in ever single way, as it houses a 1GHz processor, 4 geebees of storage, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI output capable of streaming 1080p video.

The real story of this budget-gadget isn't the specs, though - it's the software. The E70 will be running ICS out-of-the-box, which is a more than a lot of high-end devices announced thus far can say. It's not all good, however - take a look at the design:

[CES 2012] ViewSonic To Introduce ViewPhone 3, Bring A (Dull) Knife To A Gun Fight

In spite of all the exciting pre-CES announcements we’ve been seeing over the last few days, one company has been preparing a somewhat less-than-enticing device – specifically, ViewSonic with a new low-end handset that’s been dubbed simply the ViewPhone 3.

While this won’t be Viewsonic’s first foray into the low-end Android market, it will be the company’s first US smartphone – and let’s just say it won’t exactly be sparking a revolution. Have a look at the specs that have been made official thus far:

  • 3.5-inch display (unknown resolution, but don’t expect miracles)
  • 5MP camera
  • 800 MHz Qualcomm processor (presumably single-core)
  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • 3G (no 4G)
  • Support for two SIM cards

Described by ViewSonic product manager Mike Holstein as a phone for the “value seeker,” the ViewPhone 3’s perhaps single defining feature is its price tag: $250 – off-contract.

ViewSonic: We May Have Set Certain Unrealistic Expectations, But The gTablet Will Never Officially Get Honeycomb

In a move that will certainly irritate many people, ViewSonic has taken to its Facebook page with an official word on the gTablet, future support, and whether or not it will ever officially see Honeycomb. As you may have already guessed, the simple answer from ViewSonic to the latter is "no," with very little reasoning behind the decision.

The ViewSonic gTablet was one of the first Android tablets to hit the market with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset onboard, but at the time of release it was powered by Android 2.2, as 3.0 had yet to hit the market. Naturally, early adopters of the device assumed that Google's tablet specific operating system would eventually make its way onto the gTablet...

[Deal Alert] Viewsonic gTablet Price Hits Rock Bottom: $250 From eBay Daily Deals

It looks like eBay's Daily Deals feature may become the go-to source for Android tablet shopping - just last week they had the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi for $100 off, and today, the Viewsonic gTablet has found its way onto the site for a mere $250 with free shipping.

This isn't the first time that the gTablet has made its way into our deals category, either - we've actually featured it a few different times when it was on Woot. This is, however, the lowest price that we've seen this dual-core tablet go for.

A quick spec reminder is probably in order, so here you go:

  • 10.1 inch 1024x600 display
  • 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 16GB storage with microSD card slot
  • 1.3 MP front camera
  • Android 2.2

Even though it's not rocking Honeycomb, I still say this tablet is absolutely worth $250  - but you better hurry, because this deal can come to a close at any time!

ViewSonic Unveils Two New Tablets: The ViewPad 7x And The Android-Virtualized 10Pro

If you've been looking for a 7 inch tablet without the bells and whistles of the HTC Flyer or the newly announced ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 3D, then it looks like ViewSonic may have your number, as it has just announced its newest Honeycomb tablet: the 7-inch ViewPad 7x.

The ViewPad 7x is pretty cut-and-dry as far as Android tablets are concerned - just in a smaller package. It's packing a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor under its hood, along with a 7 inch, 1024x600 display, HDMI out, microUSB, and support for HSPA+.

ViewSonic gTablet OTA Update Adds Adobe Flash, USB Keyboard/Mouse Support, Falls Way Behind Custom ROMs

For all 5 people who are actually using the gTablet's stock UI instead of a custom ROM that is miles ahead of it in features, ViewSonic released a new over-the-air (OTA) update that finally adds Adobe Flash, along with external docking station and USB keyboard/mouse support and a few other things. The full list, found on ViewSonic's news page, is reproduced below:

  • Adobe Flash support
  • External docking station support
  • USB keyboard and mouse support
  • International cities available in Weather
  • Spanish and French language support
  • Energy saving screen lock

The update notification should pop up automatically upon your gTablet's next boot and won't require a wipe, so don't be afraid to flash away.

Amazon Pulls A "Me Too!", Selling Viewsonic gTablet For $280 Today

Some of you may remember that daily deal site Woot marked the Viewsonic gTablet down to just $280 (twice). Amazon (Woot's parent company) has decided they'd like to do the same, so for the third time in just a few weeks, you can score the dual-core, Tegra2-rockin' tablet for only $280. Although it's sold through Amazon, the order is fulfilled by Woot.

NVIDIA Sets The Record Straight: "We Will Support All Tegra Devices As Long As Their Manufacturers Do"

There has been a lot of confusion regarding this post on NVIDIA's Tegra developer forum that was misconstrued as vaguely implying NVIDIA would stop supporting the "Harmony" generation of Tegra devices going forward (ViewSonic gTablet, Notion Ink Adam, ViewSonic ViewPad 7, Advent Vega, and others) and would instead only stick to the "Ventana" generation. Rather than panicking and freaking out, we pinged our contact at NVIDIA to get a straight answer and held off until we heard the official response.

To clear up the air right off the bat - the issue was blown way out of proportion and in no way pertains to actual production devices.
