Intel Is Bringing Honeycomb To x86, Expect Tablets Out This Year

There have been rumors for sometime now that chipset manufacturer Intel has been looking to get into the Android tablet market, and it turns out those rumors are indeed true. Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini stated that they have received the Honeycomb source code from Google and are actively working on porting it now, with hopes of making several Honeycomb-based tablets available this year.

The current lineup of top-notch Android tablets is fairly cookie-cutter in spec, so it's nice to see that a new platform is coming along to mix things up.

This doesn't just bring good news for tablets, either - Intel is planning to support phones as well.

Toshiba Announces The "Regza" AT300 10.1" Dual-Core Tablet... In Japan

As of late, there has been a lot of talk about Toshiba's upcoming-but-still-unannounced (in the US anyway) Android 3.0 tablet, but now things are starting to speed up. Toshiba has officially announced the "Regza" tablet - the Japanese version of the tablet that we're pretty sure will be called the Thrive. It sports the same specs that we've known about for a while now:

1Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
1GB RAM
16GB Internal storage, SD Card slot
5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
10.1 inch, 1280x800 display
HDMI, miniUSB, and USB ports

It also includes a feature called Regza App Connect, which links the tablet up to other Regza devices.

[Rumor] Sony Working On 'S2,' A Dual-Screen Android Tablet

Hot on the heels of the mock-up leak for the PlayStation certified "S1," Engadget has caught wind of another Android-powered Sony tablet currently in the works. Continuing with the theme of wacky design, the device is rumored to be a clamshell-style, dual-touchscreen device. Each display will measure 5.5 inches, and when closed, the device has a cylindrical form factor reminiscent of the giant crayon-shaped calculator I had when I was 5.

Engadget's sources say that it will be running a custom version of Honeycomb with apps that are optimized for the dual screens. Google Maps is supposed to display a map on one screen while showing turn-by-turn navigation instructions or Streetview on the other.

Intel Sandy Bridge Quad-Core Processor Coming Soon To Acer Android Tablets

There's no doubt about it: tablets are getting more and more powerful. How powerful? If you ask Acer, they will soon have enough horsepower to gradually "phase out" netbooks.

The computer manufacturer told Computerworld that in the first half of 2011, it will begin selling two or three new Android tablets in the 7- to 10-inch range. While Acer didn't specify the price or Android version, the company did say something that's sure to get your Android-loving heart racing: the tablets will be "faster than laptops with Windows operating systems," and will use a quad-core Intel Sandy Bridge processor.

We've been getting a lot of information about Honeycomb over the past two days. Earlier today we got some more previews from T-Mobile and just now, at Verizon's CES keynote, they introduced us to an updated notifications system and a brand new sleek task switcher. New Honeycomb Previews Released Thanks To T-Mobile G-Slate Video Promos

Since yesterday's Honeycomb video leak and the introductions of the Xoom and G-Slate, Android fans everywhere have been awaiting more information on the sweet tablet OS. Seems like our wishes have been heard and granted by T-Mobile who has unleashed videos of the G-Slate UI. In these we find brand new user interface layouts of Gmail, the browser, Gtalk (including video chat), Google Books, and the brand new homescreen interface. Check out the videos below.

Panasonic Reveals Viera Tablet, Comes In Three Convenient Sizes

The latest manufacturer to show off an Android tablet at CES is Panasonic, whose Viera tablet will be released in three sizes: 4", 7" and 10". The three versions of the tablet, all physically identical except for the size, are all designed for use with a television, much akin to the recently announced Vizio phone and tablet.

Through Viera Connect, users will be able to stream movies on-demand and even use the screens on your TV and tablet together to watch sports at two different angles; naturally, the Viera tablet can also be used as a remote. No word on pricing, release date, or specs yet, but details on a Japan launch are expected to be revealed soon.

Motorola Announces The Xoom Honeycomb Tablet

After a surprise from Andy Rubin at D:Dive Into Mobile, a tease from Motorola themselves, and many rumors surrounding it, the Honeycomb powered Motorola Xoom is finally official. Announced today at CES, the Xoom will pack a dual-core 1GHz Tegra II processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and vanilla Android 3.0. The Xoom eschews the recent trend of 7-inch displays on tablets, and instead opts for a 10.1-inch 1280x800 (16:10) (gorilla glass) display, which should complement the 720P video playback capabilities nicely.

Along with an amazing screen, the Xoom has both a rear 5MP camera with LED flash, HD video-recording, and digital zoom; and a front-facing camera for video conferencing on Google Talk for tablets.

Samsung Finally Releasing WiFi-Only Galaxy Tab In Q1 2011

Remember back when Samsung first introduced us to the Galaxy Tab, the tablet to save us Android fans from the iPad? They promised that a WiFi-only version would eventually come out for those who didn't want to pay for another data plan.

Well today, Samsung finally announced that it will be coming to the US in the first quarter of 2011. No dates have been given for international releases, but since this is a WiFi device, it should be easy to ship it over from the US for international use.

It will hold 16GB of internal storage and will also include a microSD slot for up to 32 more gigabytes of external storage.
