Now is a good time to pick up the Galaxy S4, in any color, and on any carrier. Best Buy is promoting an early Doorbuster deal that lets customers get the phone free with a two-year contract, including both new lines and upgrades. Interested buyers can take advantage of the offer at any Best Buy store or online.

While the phone is free, the activation is not. Of course, you will also still be saddled an expensive monthly bill for 24 months.

The Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition started its Android 4.4 update yesterday, a little later than many of its owners would have liked. For those who are eager to get KitKat on their expensive AOSP phones and don't want to wait for the rollout, we've got a download link for the manual OTA update ZIP file.

Those of you who are Nexus veterans know how this goes: download the file on your PC and use ADB to reboot into recovery, copy the file over, and then flash it.

If you've been hankering for a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the high price for Verizon's contract phone may be off-putting. Wirefly is offering the Verizon Note 3 for $199.99 with a new contract, but Amazon has one-upped them - they've got the same phone-contract combo for just $169.99. The price for both is $249.99 ($50 off Verizon's price) for returning customers.

You could take the view that Wirefly has a better deal here, at least if you're willing to wait.

The 4.3 update for this and other Samsung phones packs more than the usual updated software: it also makes Samsung's later phones compatible with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, previously restricted to the Galaxy Note 3.

In a post to the Android Google+ account this evening, Google officially announced the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition would be joining the HTC One Google Play Edition in the realm of timely updates, with KitKat upgrades rolling out "starting today."

Starting today, Samsung GS4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices are getting an update to Android 4.4! Learn more about Android 4.4, KitKat: http://www.android.com/versions/kit-kat-4-4

We already saw the start of the HTC One GPE's KitKat rollout earlier today, and Samsung posted its own open source kernel files for the update before that.

We just saw HTC post its KitKat open source files for the Google Play Edition One, and now here's Samsung doing the same thing for the GPe Galaxy S4. Although, its open source website is a lot less attractive. What's with that, Samsung? At any rate, you can grab the kernel source right now at the link below.

A big phone usually comes with a big price tag, but Samsung is still committed to expanding options at the more affordable end of the market. The company just announced the Galaxy Grand 2 with mid-range specs and an emphasis on media.

The Galaxy Grand 2 packs a 5.25-inch 720p LCD, which works out to 280 pixels per inch. That's still pretty respectable. The RAM is only half of Samsung's flagship phones at 1.5GB, and the storage is stuck at 8GB.

You've got no shortage of options for carriers if you want a Galaxy S4 Mini in the United States. Verizon and Sprint have already released the phone, and now prospective US Cellular customers are getting a crack at it. The carrier posted the phone to its online store today with neither pomp nor circumstance. You can pick it up for $49.99 on a two-year contract or a whopping $499.99 without.

The Nexus 10 might be a year old, but it's still a formidable tablet with an amazing screen. Google is still selling the 32GB Nexus 10 for $499, which seems a bit steep. Tech Woot is offering the same device as a refurbished unit for a mere $279.

Not to be left behind by the larger carriers, US Cellular is also distributing the Android 4.3 update to the Galaxy S IIIs running on its network. In addition to the goodies that come with the latest version of Jelly Bean, this release gives Samsung's 2012 flagship the ability to pair with Galaxy Gear smartwatches, a privilege that until recently was exclusively provided to the Galaxy Note 3.

Galaxy S III users who do not own a Galaxy Gear may be more interested in the new Samsung KNOX compatibility or the improved pre-installed apps.
