It has been nearly a day since Samsung pushed the TouchWiz UX update to retail Galaxy Tab 10.1 units across the country, and having spent most of the day playing with it, I want to share my thoughts on it with all of you.

Before we get into the details, though, I want to address one important thing: root access. My Tab 10.1 was rooted (stock ROM and kernel) with ClockworkMod recovery before the update started rolling out, so I was naturally hesitant to pull it for fear of losing root privileges.

Samsung's call for amateur promotional Galaxy Tab 10.1 videos attracted many entries so far, most of which have already been posted by the company on YouTube. The winner is still MIA, but if the 4th place that you can see below is all the way down at 4th place, I am definitely looking forward to #1 (though I can't agree with the choices for #2 and #3).

Well done, Sergio A.

Sprint SPH-d600_right

Sprint and Samsung teamed up this morning to announce the most affordable WiMax device to date: the Conquer 4G. The Conquer is a solid mid-range device, with modest-yet-capable hardware crammed into its 3.5 inch shell:

Sprint SPH-d600_front

  • 1GHz processor
  • 2GB SD Card Included
  • 3.2MP Rear camera
  • 1.2MP front camera
  • Android 2.3.x

The real story with with phone, though, is the price. You'll be able to score this handset in all its 4G WiMax glory for a mere $99 with a new two-year agreement.

To all those who have been [im]patiently waiting for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 OTA to go live, wait no more - the update started rolling out at exactly 12:00am EST. This update brings a whole slew of awesome to the Tab 10.1, including TouchWiz UX and all of its added benefits. I know there are a lot of skeptics out there since this is the first major custom overlay to hit a Honeycomb tablet, but judging from the early reports, it has been very well received.

Intro

Update 8/9/11: Cameron took the keyboard out for a spin after the TouchWiz UX update and posted his impressions here. In short, it fixes some bugs, but most of the shortcomings remain in my opinion, and my verdict doesn't change.

Some people may never end up updating to TouchWiz UX, so I'm leaving the review below intact.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is currently my favorite Android tablet, so I was excited to see how some of its accessories, like the keyboard dock in this review, pan out.

Skysoft... errr, I mean Skype updated its previously measly Android device support from 5 devices to more than 20 today with the introduction of version 2.1 of its Android app. There are no new features outside of expanded device support, which was badly needed in order for the app to climb out of the sea of 1-star reviews (although stability and quality improvements would have made today's release even sweeter).

Unveiled at CTIA earlier this year, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 was slated for a “summer” launch in the US. However, if the Amazon UK pre-order page is the real deal it looks like our English cousins will be the first to get their hands on this device when it launches on August 12th in the UK (the original “in stock date” was reported as August 11th by Engadget, however this appears to have changed).

leaked roadmap
Last Updated: August 27th, 2011

Get ready, Verizon customers. IGN just leaked Verizon's alleged 2011 roadmap, and, unsurprisingly, it features Android quite heavily. While there aren't too many details on any of the devices outside of what we already know, it will give you a good general idea of what to expect from Verizon this year:

  • Samsung Stratosphere: Previously rumored as Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, the Stratosphere is listed as a "4G Smartphone w/Android 2.3." While it isn't exactly confirmation, there is a chance that this rumor was spot-on.

Last week we told you that Samsung would be holding an event in NYC on August 3rd (today) to unveil the TouchWiz UX update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi. That event has come and gone, and while attendees are getting their Tab's updated live, the rest of the country will have to wait until August 5th to see the update. Of course, if you live in NYC, you can swing by The Shops at Columbus Circle between 1:00PM to 6:00PM and get your Tab updated immediately.

You've probably been seeing this deal all over the net for the past couple of days, but we still want to make sure that you don't miss out on it. For today only, you can head over to your local Best Buy and grab some stock-Android goodness for absolutely nothing. The best part? This deal is good for any of the three applicable carriers - 3G on T-Mobile or AT&T, or the 4G variant on Sprint.
