In a post to the Android Building group earlier today, Jean-Baptiste Queru announced that Samsung's Nexus S 4G has officially and fully been brought into the AOSP fold. The device is now fully supported by AOSP, meaning its CDMA – and WiMax – binaries can now be "properly" distributed. Here's the full text of the announcement:

We've been able to resolve the issues around Nexus S 4G, and we can now properly distribute its CDMA and WiMAX binaries. That allows Nexus S 4G to work with AOSP just as well as Nexus S.
As a result, we now consider Nexus S 4G to be fully supported in AOSP, with no restrictions.

Everyone screws up at some point in life, but when a company as big as Sprint puts up a front-page banner showing a completely different, highly anticipated phone in place of one that's over a year old, we're going to have no choice but bring it up. And maybe even point the finger. Like so:

I'm sure we all wish the Nexus S 4G looked like that, but that is most definitely not it. I know, you're excited to get the word about the Galaxy Nexus out there (we are too, even though it's almost half a year late), but this is certainly not the way to do it.

Five days ago, Sprint announced that the Ice Cream Sandwich OTA was finally ready for the Nexus S 4G, but many of you still haven't received the update prompt. Yesterday, Google released the full OS image for the NS4G, but installing it does a full wipe, which may not be ideal for those just itching to upgrade.

Fortunately, the OTA link on Google's servers was finally found today by a number of AC forum members, which means you no longer have to wait for Sprint/Google and instead update your Nexus on your own. Since the OTA file contains the full OS image, including recovery and radio, rather than an incremental update from a specific version, you should be able to update no matter what you're currently running on your phone (feel free to point out otherwise in the comments).

Thanks again to the venerable JBQ of Google, the unmodified factory image of Android 4.0.4 for the Nexus S 4G (sojus, Android 4.0.4 IMM76D) is now available here. As JBQ states on Google+, this image is for those among you who have flashed to custom versions of AOSP and want to get back to factory state. No, by the way, there's still no word on an OTA update yet.

As with all the others, the factory images are available on the Factory Images for Nexus Devices page.

More Info

To get started, head to JBQ's Google+ post on the subject, where he has more info on a known bug where the device reports an incorrect radio version number.

Sprint just announced the OTA update that all Nexus S 4G owners have been waiting for: the update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

This OTA brings a whole slew of features, all of which come directly from ICS:

  • Customizable favorites tray visible on all 5 home screens just above the hard keys
  • Contacts application replaced with a People application that provides improved integration with Gmail, Email, Google+ and other apps
  • Multitasking allows users easy access to switch between recently used applications by tapping and holding the Home key
  • Create folders on the home screen by dragging and dropping one app onto another to create a folder
  • New lock screen actions allow users to jump into the camera or pull down  notifications to check messages, without unlocking the device
  • Swiping from left to right can dismiss individual notifications, close  apps from the recent apps list, and close browser tabs
  • Data usage provide controls for monitoring and managing network data usage
  • Camera enhancements include capturing panoramic photos, continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, stabilized image zoom and decreased shot-to-shot speed
  • Android Beam allows two NRC-enabled devices to exchange favorite apps, contacts, music, videos and more

It should be rolling out now and finish up within the coming days.

Last week, JBQ from Google released full flashable images of the newly baked Android 4.0.4 (IMM76D) for a few devices - the GSM Galaxy Nexus i9250 yakju and the Nexus S i9020T (soju). The Nexus S release specifically wasn't compatible with the AT&T version (i9020A sojua), but an image for i9020A was promised at a later date. Additionally, builds for the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and other variants as well as the Verizion Galaxy Nexus were to follow.

New Arrivals

Today, the Nexus Factory Images page was updated with some of the promised goodies, although not all of them with versions we were quite hoping for.

Earlier this month, Engadget got word that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Nexus S should resume its rollout "in the coming weeks." This go around, the update is rumored to be rolling out to the Nexus S 4G on Sprint, as well; those rumors appear to be realized with today's leak obtained by Brief Mobile: a fully-flashable, seemingly final build of ICS for the NS4G.

The leak appears to be a full ICS ROM, including updated radios, boot.img, bootloader, recovery, system.img, and userdata.img.

This is for the Nexus S 4G ONLY.

In order to flash this file on your device, you'll need a couple of things:

Flashing this will completely wipe your device!

I know what all you non-Nexus S owners are thinking: wait, didn't the ICS update roll out to the NS back in December? In fact, it did. But there was some sort of battery drain issue, so Google had to stop the update. And that's the last semi-official thing we heard about it.

Needless to say, Nexus S owners are pissed.

Today, however, Engadget has received "confirmation" from a "trusted source" that the ICS update is set to begin rolling out to the NS (again) and the NS4G "in the next few weeks." While it shouldn't take this long for El Goog to push an update to a Nexus-branded device, it's nice to hear some movement is finally being made on this front.

Just under a week after receiving almost unprecedented support from the Android community to fund the purchase of new build servers, the CM team has begun pumping out CM9 nightlies for a handful of devices. There's no question - the CM team is moving quickly, and the release of so many nightlies in such a short time span is exciting, to say the least.

Koushik Dutta, in a Google+ post earlier this evening, expressed appreciation, confirming that CyanogenMod "was able to purchase 3 top of the line, ridiculously geared, build servers," which will soon have an automatic build schedule. Dutta also indicated that CM7 nightly builds will be up and running again soon.

At the end of January, a leaked Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 build IMM26 for the Sprint Nexus S 4G ended up online, indicating that a possible official release wasn't too far off. We heard this leak caused quite a bit of commotion within the companies involved, which may have had something to do with the XDA post getting wiped clean shortly after (although the poster did state he would only keep it going for a few days).

Two weeks passed without any news, but the situation changed just a few minutes ago when we received a screenshot of one of Sprint's internal systems which clearly shows that this highly desired upgrade should finally be available February 16th.
