There's no denying Google's launch of its new Nexus lineup has been a little bumpy. On launch day, we saw near-instantaneous shortages of the Nexus 4 in multiple countries including the US. Shortly after the Nexus 4 sold out in the US, the 32GB Nexus 10 fell.
Since the Device Frame Generator moved to Google's Android Developer site and received its new name (Device Art Generator), we've heard nary a peep about additional frames or other updates. That appears to have changed today, however – the Device Art Generator now features gorgeous new frames for both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, of course with the ability to toggle shadow, glare, and rotation. Chances are if you're a Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 7 owner (or soon to be Nexus 4 / Nexus 10 owner), you probably have reason to head into the developer options menu once in a while. Or like me, just once ever to enable USB debugging. Regardless, if you go looking for these options in Android 4.2, you won't find them. That's because Google has - for whatever reason - hidden them from view in this latest update.
If you're a resident of the US waiting for your chance at one of the new Nexus devices, you've no doubt been growing envious as countries around Europe (and Australia) got to place their own orders before (and after) the rumored 12am PST launch time for the US.
Well, I've got some (kind of) good news – the wait is almost over. Google has confirmed to us that both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 will be open for order to US Play Store customers beginning tomorrow, Tuesday November 13th, 2012 at 9:00am PST.
It looks like we can add one more market to the list of those to which Google has opened the Nexus gates. Customers in a few European countries can now claim their own Nexus 4 or Nexus 10 from Google Play. Note: since these orders just opened up, you may see some errors or inconsistencies with ordering or availability. If any of the devices appear to truly be out of stock, we'll update this post.
Google promised an OTA update that brings multiple user accounts to the Nexus 10 and lockscreen widgets to both the 10 and the 4 before the official launch date of November 13th. For two days now, Ron and I have been mashing the Check Updates button on our respective devices over and over hoping to get this update as quickly as possible... and we just got it.
This, of course, brings both of our devices up to full retail, complete with the above mentioned features.
Have you been chomping at the bit to figure out when you'll actually be receiving that Nexus 4 or Nexus 10 from the Play Store that you're definitely going to buy? Well, here's your answer, straight from Google: orders will begin for both on the 13th, and those orders will start shipping the same day. No pre-orders will be taken. So, if you go for overnight shipping, you could theoretically have sweet Nexus goodness the very next day - November 14th.
Over the past couple of years, Android tablets haven't really lived up to their full potential. We've seen multiple "game changers" or "iPad killers" come and go - yet the landscape has remained the same; that is, not very good. Further proving this, the best selling Android tablet of all time isn't an Android tablet at all - it's a Kindle. The Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD have been selling like hotcakes, but that really has nothing to do with Android - it's all about Amazon services.
If you thought Google's official Ask Me Anythingvideo was a good promo for the new Nexus family, wait till you see this. A design studio called Autofuss (based in San Francisco) has created their own promo video for the Nexus 4, 7, and 10, that does a great job of showing off the new line. Take a look:
Not only is the thirty-second spot a pixel-perfect promo in terms of style, polish, and overall concept, but it stays true to Google's own Nexus branding, art style, and features copy that feels right at home in a promo made for Google.
