It may seem slightly disappointing that Froyo updates are still rolling out even as the Gingerbread source becomes available, but it is good news that Sprint is paying attention to its mid-range phones nonetheless - their version of the Samsung Intercept is now receiving the update to Android 2.2.

Also included in the update are a few bug fixes and the (rather unnecessary) addition of Sprint Navigation. As with most Android updates, it's being rolled out in waves, so it may be a few days before it see it on your device. Intercept users on Virgin Mobile, now might be the time to start pestering your carrier about this update.

The Black Friday is long gone, but another, potentially even bigger event, called Cyber Monday, is now upon us. Cyber Monday is what happens when the Black Friday goes online, and Virgin Mobile USA does not disappoint. The carrier, which uses Sprint's network, is offering its only Android handset, the Samsung Intercept, for a whopping $75 off. The deal is valid for the duration of Cyber Monday, so hurry up if you want this 800MHz Android QWERTY slider for $175, with free shipping. The beauty of Virgin Mobile USA, of course, is its plans starting at $25 a month, with NO contract to sign.

One of the best places to buy your next Android smartphone is, undoubtedly, Amazon.com, due to its excellent customer service, aggressive pricing, abundance of conveniently placed user reviews, lack of tax, and free shipping. Even better, a few months ago, Amazon opened up a dedicated Amazon Wireless store to concentrate on competitively selling  cell phones and service, including support for existing customer upgrades, family plans, and much more competitive deals.

One obvious omission in the Amazon Wireless store has been a complete lack of Sprint devices and plans. Sprint support was said to be coming for months, and while Sprint phones were available on Amazon.com itself, AmazonWireless.com remained Sprint-free, which means no aggressive pricing, support for existing line upgrades, or family plans.

Virgin Mobile announced via an image upload on their Facebook page that they're landing the Samsung Intercept as their first Android phone. No word yet on pricing or release date, but we can't imagine it would be too terribly much (should be in the range of their LG Rumor Touch).

Phones

Not everyone needs a new phone at this time of year, especially as you probably got your last one some time around Christmas, but if you’re in the market for a decent Android phone on your college-sized budget, here’s the what you’re looking at if you’re one of the four major carriers:

Verizon

  • Motorola Droid - Affordable doesn’t necessarily have to mean cheap, and such is the case with the original Motorola Droid. While Verizon itself no longer carries the original, (it’s been dropped in favor of the Droid 2) it can be had for the price of $0.00 (or, at most, $0.01) at third-party retailers like WireFly, Amazon, and LetsTalk.com.

A few weeks ago, Samsung was kind enough to send us an Intercept for review. While it may not be of Galaxy S caliber, it’s not intended to be. Rather, it’s more so aimed at the feature phone crowd – those who want something more powerful than a feature phone, but maybe not all the bells and whistles of a high-end smartphone. We spoke (unofficially) with Samsung about what other phones they think people will cross-shop the Intercept to, and they agreed its target is something like the enV Touch.

There are two compelling things about this phone. First, the hardware for mid-level phones has improved tremendously.

Samsung has been very good to us lately – yesterday, I came home to find the (pink) Intercept on my doorstep, and today they delivered a Captivate to Chris (yea, I got the short end of that stick.) This may not be the crown jewel in Samsung’s collection, but it serves as a phone for the masses.

It’s funny (but not surprising) to see Android moving down the phone spectrum – or rather, maybe Android is just keeping its spot and the hardware has caught up to it. Either way, this is interesting in that it’s the first Android phone that I see as being targeted at the featurephone crowd.

Is Samsung’s Epic 4G (otherwise known as the Galaxy S Pro) too hot for you to handle? Not to worry, because the Samsung Intercept is up for pre-order right now from Sprint’s EVP site for discount customers at just $99.99 after rebate on a 2 year contract.

According to the page, the ‘regular’ price of the Intercept is shown at $349.99, although it’s not been confirmed what the actual price will be for customers buying the phone in store. This may not be huge news for the average consumer wanting to get their hands on the device, but we also know some extra technical specs thanks to the site.
