tab

A prototype of Samsung's Galaxy tablet (creatively named the "Galaxy Tab") has been spotted again, this time in the hands of a Chinese citizen. Unfortunately, Google Translate is pretty awful on this one:

Broke the identity of a mystery, e-mail name is (づ¯ 3 ¯)づ, good sense ... pregnant, and he also presents us with a gift: The Galaxy Tab landing our home, so ifanr a Samsung flat in the first Chinese Web site, thanks his readers!

Those pregnant men, they always seem to land all the good gadgets. Our mystery leaker confirms some previously-rumored specs while sprinkling in some commentary.

Rumor around the interwebs in the last few days has been that Samsung may be planning on announcing the Samsung Galaxy Tab during the August 11th press conference.

Unfortunately, we just got word from the official Samsung PR source saying that the event is unrelated to a tablet release. In fact, it’s completely unrelated to the mobile division altogether and will be related to the Consumer Electronics division. While, one could argue that CE could include a tablet as well, the PR contact specifically mentioned that a tablet is not involved.

While it’s safe to assume that whatever it is will be big (as CrunchGear pointed out, it’s hosted by Tim Baxter, who is the President of Samsung America), it won’t be related to phones or tablets.

Samsung has confirmed that their Android tablet device, the Galaxy Tab, will be shipping in Q3 of this year. The Galaxy Tab has been rumored for some time now, and is very similar in design and function to the Galaxy S line of phones – which our own unboxings show are some pretty gorgeous pieces of kit.

As you can see, the tab truly does look like an oversized Galaxy S. While it’s certainly not ugly, the Tab doesn’t quite seem to pull the look off as well – this is a case where simply being blown up just doesn’t quite work.

The title says it all: Samsung has sold a whopping 200,000 Galaxy S’ in the first 10 days in South Korea. That may not seem like a lot in comparison to the iPhone 4’s 1.7m in 3 days, but keep in mind that the iPhone 4 launched internationally. South Korea’s population (as of 2009) was just over 50 million people – meaning they’re less than 1/6 the size of the US. A more accurate comparison? Sprint corporate sold 66.5k EVO’s in the first 3 days, in a country 6x larger.

With the Galaxy S set to launch in 110 countries in the coming months (including on all 4 major US carriers), the sales numbers are sure to skyrocket.
