Nearly half a year ago, Samsung shocked the smartphone world with the unveiling of an entirely unconventional phone at IFA 2011. Why was it unconventional and shocking, you ask? Well, because it sports a massive 5.3-inch screen. That phone is none other than the mighty Samsung Galaxy Note.

The phone is scheduled to release today, February 19th, and we've seen quite a bit of banter going around on what to expect. However, the most prominent question is whether it's a tablet or a smartphone. Obviously it's meant to be a phone with tablet-like features for on-the-go productivity, but is it practical to carry this thing around on a daily basis or is it just a gimmick that is destined to flop?

AT&T's Galaxy Note Already Rooted Via Odin

Today has been a busy day in the world of rooting – we've already seen root access given to the Xoom Family Edition and the LG Spectrum. The Galaxy Note, slated for official release tomorrow (but already in the hands of some eager pre-order customers) has also been granted root today, thanks to Da_G over at XDA. The method appears to be similar to the Epic 4G Touch's original root procedure, and requires just a couple of quick Odin commands.

Paper Camera Updated To Version 2.0, Adds Video Capability, Android Beam Support

Paper Camera, one of the most successful camera apps on the Android Market, got an update to version 2.0 today. You may remember our preview of version 2.0 earlier this month, 2.0 being the update which promised to add video capability to the already awesome app. Well, JFDP Labs LTD has made good on that promise, and thrown in a few other tweaks as well.

At the moment, only the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy SII, Galaxy Note, Droid 3, and Transformer Prime have official video support, but JFDP advises that other devices "might have some degree of support."

Besides added video capabilities, Paper Camera has also received support for Android Beam, allowing users to transfer images seamlessly between devices powered by Ice Cream Sandwich.

Galaxy Note Phablet Available For Pre-Order From AT&T And Best Buy US And Canada

Ever since Samsung announced the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note phone/tablet, we've had a lot of fun coming up with endearing names for this "tweener" device. It's certainly an interesting device and North American customers can finally get their hands on it in the next few weeks.

As promised by AT&T, the Galaxy Note is now officially available for pre-order from its website.

Similarly, Best Buy US also has the Note up for pre-order in Carbon Blue and Ceramic White.

Both Best Busy US and AT&T are offering the phablet for $299.99 with a minimum two-year monthly voice ($39.99/month) and data plan ($20/month).

Kernel Source Code For The AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note Hits The Open Source Release Center

What do you get when you combine those three things? If you said "source code for the Galaxy Note on AT&T," then you win a cookie. Go wait over there and we'll bring it right out.

Samsung just pushed the source to its Open Source Release Center for all to grab, but there is a catch. For some reason, there are three different versions of the code, all basically identical, save one line (thanks for digging through the code, JCase). We're not entirely sure what this one line represents - but we're sure it's something.

Samsung's Big Super Bowl Product Reveal Is A 90-Second Commercial For The Galaxy Note

Yesterday afternoon, @SamsungMobileUS revealed that the company would be launching a "device so revolutionary only an ad in America's biggest game [the Super Bowl] can do it justice." Many on Twitter and across the web assumed it would be the Galaxy S III or a new tablet; while it was doubtful in light of recent rumors that it would be the SGSIII, the new tablet idea was at least feasible.

As it turns out, Samsung is "revealing" the U.S. Galaxy Note - so to the technophiles, there's nothing new to see here, really. In hindsight, it's a bit of a no-brainer: yesterday, Samsung officially announced that the Note would go on sale on February 19, and preorders would begin...

Are you one of literally dozens of users who believe that your 4.5" smartphone is too small, that 7" tablets are too big, and that styluses never got the shot they deserve on a modern smartphone? Then mark February 19th on your calendars, friends. The Galaxy Note from Samsung is landing that very day (pre-orders start on February 5th).

The Galaxy Note is unique enough in its own right. Part phone, part tablet, the device attempts to be it all for the power user who can't quite decide which device they want. For what it's worth, the stylus looks to be one of the best attempts at integrating writing with the familiar touchscreen.

Samsung Galaxy Note Making Its Way To Canada In Mid-February

The powerhouse Samsung Galaxy Note is certainly making the rounds as of late - first in Europe, then it was announced for AT&T's LTE network in the U.S., and, soon enough, our neighbors to the north will be able to enjoy the 5.3-inch beast as well.

According to Samsung Canada's website, the Note is expected to be available sometime in mid-February with an assumed launch on Telus' LTE network and announcements coming from Rogers and Bell soon after.

AT&T embraced the go big or go home motto like a boss today at CES -- it announced six new Android devices. Three premium phones, two budget phones, and a budget tablet. Not only that, but every single one of these new devices will run on its 4G LTE network. Let's take a look at what we know so far, and we'll update as more info shows up.

Update: I would like to note that just because all of the phones are shown running Gingerbread, that doesn't mean they won't ship with ICS. We may not see many of these devices until Q2, so don't get frustrated.
