Samsung-Conquer-4G-01

Sprint just updated its support docs for the Samsung Conquer 4G with details of a new OTA update set to begin rolling out at any moment. It's a rather small and nondescript update that just brings a couple of fixes and enhancements:

Enhancements/Fixes:

  • 4G Modem Update - not customer impacting
  • Lock screen changes - swipe in any direction to unlock

Like I said, it's minor. The update should begin rolling out today or tomorrow and will complete its rollout process within ten days.

Owners of the Samsung Conquer 4G on Sprint may have received notification of a small OTA update this morning that brings a couple of little changes to the device, including a "security fix." Like with past updates, that basically translates into "removal of Carrier IQ software."

Aside from that, it also removes the Magic, Smoke, Maps, Nexus, Spectrum, Water, and Waveform live wallpapers (does anyone actually use those, anyway?). The update should be rolling out now according to Sprint's online documentation and will hit all devices within the next ten days.

Keeping with its tradition of addressing software issues in a timely fashion, HTC just started pushing out a minor bug-fixing update for the EVO 3D. The update (version number 2.08.651.2) began its rollout this morning and should be available to all EVO 3D owners by 8/23.

This is hardly a game-changing update, but it does iron out some potentially irksome kinks (Update: and brings native screenshots, just like on the European Sensation - just hold the Power button and tap Home!):

Additionally, the Samsung Conquer 4G will be receiving a security patch (EG15) on the day it launches (8/21), so if you're planning on picking one up, be prepared to update it as soon as you take it out of the box.

Sammy has been on a roll lately as far as releasing source code is concerned, and the kernel source for the upcoming Conquer 4G just hit the Open Source Release Center. This means that, as soon as the phone lands on the Now Network's shelves on August 21st, all kinds of homebrewed goodness can get underway.

You can grab the code from here.

When the Samsung Conquer 4G was officially announced, we called it the "most affordable 4G WiMax device to date." That couldn't be more true, because now you can pre-order this device from Wal-Mart without spending a dime -- if you plan on signing a new agreement with the Now Network, that is. Current Sprint customers aren't left out in the cold, either, as you can pre-order this phone for $20 less than it will be on launch day, saving yourself the hassle of dealing with a mail-in-rebate along the way.
