Pantech Breakout Receiving Minor OTA Update (Version CA66F.BB), Removes Some Verizon Bloat

Hey Pantech Breakout owners - your phone's about to be a little less Verizon-heavy, a la an otherwise small OTA update that should be headed out to your device in the next week or two. Software version CA66.F.BB removes VZW Apps, Verizon Video, Rhapsody, and Blockbuster from your device, mostly because they're all totally useless! There's an Android security patch bundled in here, too, and an update low memory notification string. OK.

As I said before, you can expect the update to roll out, most likely, in the next week or two.

If the phones that Pantech has released in America thus far have been your sole exposure to the South Korean manufacturer, you might be surprised to learn that the company has some legitimately awesome hardware in its home territory. The Pantech Perception... isn't. While it competes with the likes of the Galaxy S III on paper, at least in some respects, a combination of old software and expensive hardware makes this new Verizon phone a hard sell to anyone who wants a high-powered device. It launches on Thursday, April 25th for $100 on contract... after a $50 mail-in rebate. Remember those?

Pantech Used 500 Vega Number 6 Smartphones To Create This Pretty Rad Stop Motion Animation

If you've ever wondered what a small city made entirely of smartphones would look like, wonder no more. Pantech created just such a city using 500 Vega Number 6 smartphones - appropriately enough, they call it Vega City.

Now that you know the setting, let's talk about why the company made this little place: for its new stop motion animated movie. Basically, the phones make up the entire city; walls, "streets," buildings – the whole nine yards. Atop this digital cityscape, a flexible young lass does her best to elude her attackers in this impressive 1:35 micro-flick.

Verizon Announces First Software Update For Pantech Marauder (Version S910LVWD211F.D1)

Verizon has just announced a software update for the QWERTY-sliding Pantech Marauder, a phone we reviewed last August. The software update includes the now-standard Verizon Remote Diagnostics support utility, and a substantial list of software changes. The stock email app now supports a combined inbox mode and conversation view, Google Chrome has been added, and the Pantech 'Simple Mode' UI has been enhanced. The phone apparently doesn't reboot after a modem crash anymore, either, which is probably good.

There's no Android version upgrade included, unfortunately. The new update will likely be headed out some time in the next week or two.

Pantech Hops On The Super-Sized Bandwagon, Announces The 5.9" 1080p Vega No. 6 (For Korea)

Another gigantic phone, you say? Yes indeed - Pantech just announced the 5.9" Vega No. 6 for its home market of South Korea, though there's no reason in particular to expect that's where this mega-phone will stay.

The No. 6 is the largest 1080p display phone announced to date, which is an accomplishment... I guess. A quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (can we just start calling it 'SS4P' or something?) powers the No. 6's screen of many pixels, and a 3150mAh battery keeps the lithium ions flowing freely. They've stuffed a 13MP camera in there, too, because "bigger numbers" is basically this phone's calling card.

The Pantech Perception For Verizon Shows Its Face, Which Is Surprisingly Not All That Ugly

You know, for an underdog, Pantech has been proving it knows how to put out some pretty decent, affordable hardware as of late. Just two days ago, it unearthed the upcoming Discover for AT&T, and now a leak of what appears to be the VZW equivalent – the Perception – just showed up in a leak over at Unwired View.

Much like it's Big Blue-powered cousin, the Perception is said to be packing a 720p display and 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4. Other details are scant at the moment, but it's probably pretty safe to assume the rest match up with that of the Discover, as well.

[CES 2013] Hands-On With The Pantech Discover For AT&T (Video)

Drop this one in the "noteworthy, but not notable" bucket, but we had some time last night to check out AT&T's Pantech Discover, a phone with a pretty impressive specification sheet given its price point - just $50 on contract.

The Discover has a 4.8" 720p display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 16GB of internal storage, 12.6MP rear camera, LTE, and runs Android 4.0 (OK, that's a bit of a miss). While we wouldn't call this a groundbreaking device in and of itself, the price AT&T will be peddling this particular piece of hardware at is going to make it a very attractive option for the brick-and-mortar crowd (eg, your parents).

Pantech hasn't been going after the bigger manufacturers in the "superphone" category, at least outside of its home turf of South Korea. Until today, that is - at its CES press conference, AT&T announced the Pantech Discover, a flagship-class device that meets and in some cases beats the best that Samsung, HTC and Motorola have to offer. In addition to somewhat typical high-end specs like a 4.8-inch 720p screen, 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and 16GB of on-board memory, the Discover boasts a best-in-class camera (at least on paper) of 12.6 megapixels. And that's not even the most surprising statistic: the Discover will retail for just $49.99 on-contract.

Verizon's Pantech Breakout Getting Update To S8995VWCA55F.BB With A Long List Of Tweaks

Listen up, Pantech Breakout owners – Verizon has just announced an update to build S8995VWCA55F.BB that brings with it a laundry list of tweaks and enhancements. While it's not a bump to the next version of Android, the update is still refreshing, given the Breakout's debut on Verizon is now more than a year behind us.

The update, which should be rolling out to Breakout owners any time now, comes with improved SMS delivery, memory management fixes, enhancements for data connectivity, and improvements made "to reduce SD Card issues" among other things. AT&T Pantech Element Android 4.0 Update Now Live

Do you own a Pantech Element? Hello? Is this thing on? Well, anyway, if you do, the company is now rolling out an update for the semi-rugged slate that brings Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich, along with a host of other changes.
