Last week, I traded my Google I/O Chromebook for an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer/keyboard dock combo and started exploring the fascinating laptop/tablet hybrid. Overall, my impressions so far are more positive than I thought they would be, and I'll most likely end up selling the 3G XOOM that has none of the features the Transformer with the dock have to offer. The only problem with the Transformer that I've experienced is a relatively poor battery life compared to both the XOOM and the Tab 10.1, which I can't explain yet...

Samsung just started pushing a small, 3.22MB update to the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab 10.1, most likely to address bugs that were introduced with TouchWiz UX. It's unclear exactly what the update fixes, only that it "improves stability."

I must warn you, though -- I accepted the download on my rooted Tab 10.1 with ClockworkMod recovery, and after the installation was complete, the screen went black (but remained on) and nothing else happened.

Users of the Motorola Flipside have had to be a patient bunch whilst waiting for their Froyo fix; since making its debut on AT&T in October of last year, the device has been running Android 2.1 with MOTOBLUR software. Fortunately for those users, they can now upgrade to a newer version of Android through the Motorola support website right now!

According to the update page, you will need to have at least 40 MB of internal free space on your phone and 100 MB of SD card space available before getting your hands on Froyo, but the whole process seems fairly painless.

Following the European Sensation and this morning's EVO 3D's updates to Android 2.3.4, which, among other things, brought bootloader unlocking capabilities to both devices, T-Mobile just announced that the Sensation 4G is now receiving the 2.3.4 update as well. The update (software version 1.45.531.1) brings the following changes to the device:

The update to Android 2.3.4 / software version 1.45.531.1 has the following features and improvements.

New Features

    • Software stability
    • Improved battery life

    Improvements

      • Improvements to Trace dictionary
      • Improvements to screen responsiveness
      • Improvements to video playback
      • Improvements  regarding device reboot / power off
      • Improvements to icon  pixilation
      • Improvements to Wi-Fi connection
      • Improvements to screen/photo resolution

I'm willing to bet that the update also brings bootloader unlocking, just as soon as HTC opens up the flood gates over at HTCDev.com's bootloader unlock page.

A couple of days ago, HTC revealed their bootloader unlock portal and started with 1 of the 3 (so far) promised devices - the European Sensation. The EVO 3D  and the T-Mobile Sensation 4G remained MIA for the time being.

Notice how the Sensation was unlocked shortly after receiving an Android 2.3.4 OTA, which apparently gave it its "unlockability." Now remember what happened this morning? Yup - the EVO 3D also got the 2.3.4 update and, you guessed it - it's now unlockable at HTCDev.com.

The wait has been long for those eager to find out more about Ice Cream Sandwich (i.e. everyone in the Android community), but it appears that the date is finally drawing near, as more and more details are starting to leak out. Last week we got our first look at the next version of Android, and today Electronic Times published some details on the first device that will run it - the Nexus Prime.

Best Buy will be offering a pretty incredible deal beginning this Sunday, August 21st -- buy a qualifying Samsung HDTV, and you'll score a free 16GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Of course, the big question is: what defines "qualifying" in the mind of Best Buy? In order to snag the free Tab 10.1, you must purchase a Samsung 46" LED 1080p Smart 3D HDTV, which will set you back around $1500.

Keeping with its tradition of addressing software issues in a timely fashion, HTC just started pushing out a minor bug-fixing update for the EVO 3D. The update (version number 2.08.651.2) began its rollout this morning and should be available to all EVO 3D owners by 8/23.

This is hardly a game-changing update, but it does iron out some potentially irksome kinks (Update: and brings native screenshots, just like on the European Sensation - just hold the Power button and tap Home!):

Additionally, the Samsung Conquer 4G will be receiving a security patch (EG15) on the day it launches (8/21), so if you're planning on picking one up, be prepared to update it as soon as you take it out of the box.

Earlier this week, the OTA update to Android 2.3.4 finally began rolling out to HTC Sensations around Europe. Our unit received the update yesterday, and quite by accident we discovered that - besides being able to make voice/video calls in GTalk - we also had a new ability to take screenshots untethered from a computer.

Those of you familiar with the standard method of taking screenshots through the Android SDK know how convoluted the process can be: hunting for drivers, enabling debugging, living down those notification-bar icons ...

The DROID Incredible has remained without Gingerbread while its successor, the Incredible 2, has had it for well over a month. A Verizon support rep is now claiming that the Incredible's long awaited Ginger-bump has been put on hold pending final approval from Verizon's product team - which basically translates to: we're not happy with it yet.

It could be a single bug, or wider user experience problems. This means the delay may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks - or more.
