Xperia-Play

I know, I know. 4.0.2 sounds a lot like Android 4.0, but it isn't. It's actually Gingerbread 2.3.4, and Verizon Xperia Play owners who wish to rock out like it's May 2011 need only mash the update button.

The good news (in addition to the version bump) is that this update will let you take pictures with the right trigger (how did they not think of that earlier?), enable 720p video with continuous autofocus, and fix those crazy bugs like charging forcing landscape mode.

Huawei-MediaPad-544x338px

Huawei was the first company to bring Android 3.2 on a seven-inch slate to the mainstream with the MediaPad, and now it has released an official Ice Cream Sandwich for the device.

The 329MB download brings a seemingly stock Android experience, as well as all of the enhancements and benefits of ICS along with it.

Unlike most devices, the update for the MediaPad isn't being sent over-the-air, so in order to grab this update, you'll have to head over to Huawei's website for the download (installation instructions should be inside of zip).

Samsung Canada has finished porting Ice Cream Sandwich to a whole bunch of devices, which in Samsung press release parlance means they are "eligible" for an upgrade. Does that mean you can hit that "update" button today and start downloading ICS? Well, that's complicated.

First though, the list of devices:

  • GALAXY S II
  • GALAXY S II LTE
  • GALAXY S II LTE HD
  • GALAXY S II X
  • GALAXY Note
  • GALAXY Tab 7.0
  • GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus
  • GALAXY Tab 8.9
  • GALAXY Tab 10.1

Now, for the caveats: Sammy says "The upgrade will be available today on select devices in Canada and will continue rolling out to devices and carriers throughout the quarter." and "The availability of the software upgrade and specific models upgradable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements.

The iPod may be dead, baby, dead, but that hasn't stopped Samsung from trying to enter the PMP market. The company's latest iterations of its Player line, the Galaxy Player 3.6 and 4.2, has landed and, not to put anything indelicately, but we're left to wonder why Samsung chose to enter this market, or what the company hopes to accomplish. After using the device for a few days, we're sure it's not going to shake up the media player market.

Despite recent reports of data connectivity issues, it looks like owners of Sprint's Galaxy Nexus have a couple of things to be excited about as we head into the new week.

First off, the CyanogenMod team has begun cooking up CM9 Nightlies for the device, offering users a nightly dose of cutting-edge, ICS-powered code.

Additionally, the Sprint-connected Nexus is now privvy to its own builds of ClockworkMod's recovery solution – both touch and otherwise.

Almost one year ago, Acer released its first Android-powered tablet: the Iconia Tab A500. It entered the market at an excellent price point, while still offering the same hardware specs as the then-current tablet top-dogs. As a result, the Android community embraced this budget powerhouse, making it one of the more popular Android tablets of 2011.

Fast-forward to the present, and the A500's successor, the A510, is now available. This is more of an incremental update to the A500, as it packs the NVIDIA's powerhouse quad-core Tegra 3 superchip, but the majority of the other specs are nearly identical to its predecessor.

Despite Australia's historically diverse movie industry, up until recently, Aussies found Google's Play and YouTube services devoid of films available to them.

But no more! As of late yesterday, Australian Google users can access both the Movies page on Google Play and the YouTube counterpart. They'll have access to countless movies, both from US studios (e.g. The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, NBCUniversal, Village Roadshow Pictures and Lionsgate) and from Australian producers (e.g.

Okay, so maybe you didn't win a Prime in any of our other giveaways. Well, guess what? Here's another chance!

So, what's the occasion? Only the release of one of the best games ever come to Android: The Dark Meadow: The Pact. I'm completely obsessed with this game right now - it's incredible. Don't believe me? Check out my review.

Since NVIDIA and Phosphor Games (the creator of The Dark Meadow) are just as excited about this game as we are, they decided to give us a Prime and dock to give away to one lucky reader, along with a $25 AMEX gift card to go towards purchases in the Play Store (like more gold or sun coins for TDM).

In recent memory, there are only 2 phones I've been as excited to lay my hands on as the One X, and those are the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II. There's a good reason for my excitement: this is the first phone to pack Nvidia's excellent Tegra 3 CPU. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, really; other touted features - such as the amazing unibody design, ultra high-quality camera, and beautiful screen - help build upon that excitement.
