Something about the international Duos (dual-SIM) models of Samsung's Galaxy phones makes them ripe for discounts, especially on eBay. We start seeing good deals on these phones a few weeks after release, and they only get better with time. Case in point: today one vendor is offering both the standard Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge, both in Duos flavors, both for hundreds of dollars off of MSRP. The S7 Duos is just $469.99 while the S7 Edge Duos is $519.99.
The mobile market is mature enough that there aren't too many issues left when it comes to cross-compatibility between Android and iOS, at least for relatively simple matters like mobile web surfing or SMS. But the latest flagship phones on both sides of the aisle seem to have a bit of digital beef, at least according to a few Pixel owners. This discussion on the Google's product forum details a bizarre bug distorting screenshots sent from the iPhone 7 Plus (the latest and most expensive iPhone) to the Pixel. Read More
If you closely follow smartphone deals, you know that the US unlocked models of Samsung's Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge don't often go on sale. However, for Black Friday, several retailers are handing some pretty nice discounts and freebies out for them. We're also seeing some discounts on American carrier and international dual SIM models. The MediaPad M3, Huawei's latest attempt to compete with mid-sized tablets in the iPad Mini niche, has only been officially available in the US for a week. But the tablet is already on sale, and by an impressive 20% no less. Amazon is selling the MediaPad M3 for $239, $60 off the retail price. That's not bad at all for a device with its specs, especially since competition in the premium Android tablet space (and in this smaller form factor) seems to be so thin these days. Read More
Cyanogen Inc. may be dying as a company, but the voluntarily-maintained CyanogenMod ROMs are still alive and kicking. Case in point: seven more devices are joining CyanogenMod 14.1, which is based on Android 7.1 Nougat. Six of these Android-powered machines have builds already up, but one doesn't yet. Read More
Motorola's recent high-end phones have been a bit disappointing, but the budget-friendly Moto G4 is a solid device thanks to its clean software, unlocked support for GSM and CDMA, and long battery life. Even when it's not on sale, this phone is a good deal. You don't even have to pay full price today, though. Amazon is selling all the Moto G4 and G4 Plus variants for as much as $70 off the usual price. Read More
The Nextbit Robin is a quirky little phone, selling itself on a unique cloud storage-based Android ROM and a striking squared-off body. Ryan gave it a solid review when it debuted earlier this year, noting its appealing design and budget price. The phone frequently goes on sale from various retailers, but today's deal on eBay might be the best yet: it's down to just $149.99, a whopping $250 off of the original price.
In an interview with Reuters, Xiaomi's Hugo Barra addressed a question that seems to be one the company has managed to avoid to date: its declining smartphone sales. For all the hype Xiaomi has generated over the last few years, it has recently experienced a sudden and dramatic shift in sales figures - and not in the right direction. In Q1 2016, Xiaomi's handset sales were estimated to be down 25% over the previous year, versus a global smartphone shipment decline of just 0.1%. They declined a further 38% in Q2 2016. In Q3, its Chinese domestic sales have dropped an alleged 45%. Read More
Want a cheap tablet to keep around the house, let the kids play with, maybe browse some sites on, play a few non-resource intense games, and generally use sporadically for small tasks? Amazon's Fire tablet should definitely be on top of your list. It comes in a couple of variants: the Fire Tablet 7 is the cheapest with a 7" 1024x600 display and a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with 8 or 16GB of storage, whereas the Fire HD 8 has an 8" 1280x800 display and keeps the same processor but ups the storage to 16 or 32GB. There's also a Kids Edition of the Fire Tablet 7 that comes with a kid-proof case to protect it from damage. Read More
