[Update: OnePlus 5 download available] New OnePlus 5/5T Open Beta adds new clipboard and Switch apps, improves power consumption management, and more

OnePlus' second 2017 flagship has turned out to be one of my favorite phones, but the largest disappointment at launch was that it shipped with Nougat instead of Oreo. However, OnePlus kept true to its word that the 5T would get Oreo via an Open Beta before the end of the year. Now it's time for the second update, which includes some new stock apps, improves background task management and adds some other quality of life things.

The Lava Red OnePlus 5T first debuted in November of last year. To the chagrin of many fans, it turned out to be exclusively for the Chinese market, but that will soon cease to be the case. This especially bright OnePlus 5T is headed to India, and enthusiasts there will be able to buy one starting January 20th.

[Hands-on] OnePlus announces limited edition Sandstone White OnePlus 5T

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5T in November, just a few months after the OnePlus 5. While the price was slightly higher, the 5T added a few notable features like an 18:9 display and rear-facing fingerprint reader. Since then, OnePlus has dropped the limited edition Star Wars 5T in India, and now a similar device is coming to the rest of us. The new Sandstone White OnePlus 5T doesn't have Star Wars branding, but it seems otherwise identical right down to the bright red alert slider.

Android 8.0 Oreo comes to the OnePlus 5T with the OxygenOS Open Beta 1

With a little time left before the year is over, OnePlus' engineers and team appear to still be hard at work trying to make Oreo for the OnePlus 5T happen and it looks like they succeeded. The first Open Beta for OxygenOS has rolled for the new 5T and it brings with it the first taste of Oreo on the phone.

If OnePlus' effort with the OP5 is to be taken as a benchmark, the 5T might go from first beta to second beta to release in less than a month, which means we could have stable Oreo on it before the end of January.

OnePlus 5 and 5T can't play Netflix in HD, but the feature will be added at some point

The OnePlus 5T is one of our favorite phones at AP. It's a fantastic value, improving on its predecessor without costing a whole lot more. But there is still one unfortunate disadvantage to using one. Like OnePlus' older phones, it doesn't support the correct DRM level for HD playback on services such as Netflix. But OnePlus has promised us that this will be corrected in the future for the OnePlus 5 and 5T.
