Merry (early) Christmas, OnePlus 5 owners. Oxygen OS 5.0 is now out of beta for the OnePlus 5. Not only do you get to enjoy a holiday taste of Android 8.0 Oreo, but this update also includes the latest security patches for December. The OTA is incrementally rolling out now so it could be a while before you see it, though.

OxygenOS Open Beta 3 brings face unlock to the OnePlus 5

A few days ago, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei announced that the OnePlus 5T's face unlock feature would arrive on the 5, "due to popular demand." The feature was not included in the phone's Oreo update, but it has now arrived in an OxygenOS Open Beta for the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5T's face unlock feature is coming to the OnePlus 5

One of the new features on the OnePlus 5T is face unlock, which works in a similar manner to the iPhone X's face unlock (though OP's implementation is less secure). OnePlus 5 owners already received an early Christmas present in the form of an Android Oreo update, but there is another addition in the works - face unlock support.

OnePlus 5 and 5T can't play Netflix in HD, but the feature will be added at some point

The OnePlus 5T is one of our favorite phones at AP. It's a fantastic value, improving on its predecessor without costing a whole lot more. But there is still one unfortunate disadvantage to using one. Like OnePlus' older phones, it doesn't support the correct DRM level for HD playback on services such as Netflix. But OnePlus has promised us that this will be corrected in the future for the OnePlus 5 and 5T.

OnePlus starting Oreo open beta this month, final OTAs coming in early 2018

OnePlus just announced its new flagship phone. The OnePlus 5T comes with a Snapdragon 835, a 6-inch OLED, and... Nougat? Yes, the new phone is still running an old version of Android, but that will change soon-ish. In just a few weeks you could be rocking Oreo on your OnePlus phone, but the final release is still a few months out.

[Update x3: Qualcomm responds] OnePlus left a backdoor in its devices capable of root access

Just a month ago, OnePlus was caught collecting personally identifiable data from phone owners through incredibly detailed analytics. While the company eventually reversed course on the data collection, another discovery has been made in the software of OnePlus phones. One developer found an application intended for factory testing, and through some investigation and reverse-engineering, was able to obtain root access using it.

The vast majority of Android device buyers don't know or care what a custom ROM is. And that's completely fine - a phone or tablet's stock ROM will be enough for 99.9% of potential users. But for the 0.1% that like to tinker, the development community surrounding a given device can drastically impact the value. Your purchase can become a much better deal if there is a wealth of custom ROM options available, extending its lifespan for possibly years (and nearly a decade for the HD2).

There are quite a few popular custom ROMs in the wild, but LineageOS is probably one of the best overall.
