OnePlus Announces The Lab, A Community Review Program For The OnePlus 3

Do you fancy yourself a smartphone expert? Maybe you ought to help OnePlus evaluate its phones by applying for The Lab. It's a community review program for the OnePlus 3, which is going to be announced in a few weeks. OP is calling this a "peer review," but it's not like they have time to change anything if the fans don't like it. OnePlus just wants to create its own review of the phone with users writing it.

OnePlus 3 TENAA Certification Gives Away Most Specs And Device Photos

The OnePlus 3 is almost upon us. The company is hyping up the virtual launch aboard a space station and the leaks have been abundant recently, so even though we don't have a precise launch date yet, we do know it's coming soon-ish.

But today we get our first official look at the phone, courtesy of TENAA. The US has the FCC, China has TENAA, and the latter keeps its records public so whenever a phone is certified, it shows up on the site in all its glory. The TENAA's certification for the OnePlus 3 confirms the previous image of the phone we've seen (read: the HTC 10-like design) with its big front button that is rumored to hide a fingerprint scanner, its protruding camera on the back, and its horizontal lines on the top and bottom of the backplate.

OnePlus Releases OxygenOS 3.0.1 Beta For OnePlus 2, But Still No Final Marshmallow Build

Most flagship phones from last year have gotten their Marshmallow updates by this point, but not the OnePlus 2. Technically, it's not a flagship—it's a flagship killer. OnePlus took time out from killing flagships in March to release a community build (beta) of Marshmallow for the OP2, and now there's an update to that in the form of OxygenOS 3.0.1. Guess what, it's still just a community build.

Evan Blass Shows Off An Official Render Of The OnePlus 3

We first spotted the OnePlus 3 last week through a series of blurry photos of a disguised phone posted onto Chinese social network Weibo. The photos revealed what looked to be a metal back on the phone, a single flash LED with no laser autofocus, a possible fingerprint scanner/button below the display, and different packaging options and designs for the phone.

Now we have further confirmation of that original leak through non other than Evan Blass, of @evleaks fame. Evan posted a render of the phone showing its HTC 10-inspired metallic design, protruding camera, OnePlus logo, bottom USB-C and 3.5mm ports, bottom-firing speaker, and a chunky home button below the display.

Alleged OnePlus 3 Pictures Appear On Twitter, Front And Rear Of Device Shown Off

Third time lucky? The OnePlus 3 is right around the corner and as if on cue, leaked images of the phone have appeared on Twitter, courtesy of @krispitech (although they appeared on the Chinese social network 'Weibo' first). It unfortunately has a case disguising the looks of the phone, but there's still a fair bit on show. Most noticeable is a hardware home button, probably hiding a fingerprint sensor, similar to those on the original OnePlus One and the OnePlus 2, although this button looks chunkier.

The device looks reasonably large - it's quite possible that OnePlus has kept the same screen size and resolution - 1080p - from their previous two flagships for the third time running.

Android 6.0 started rolling out to the OnePlus One early last month. It came in the form of Cyanogen OS 13.

CyanogenMod 13 Nightly Builds Now Available For The OnePlus X

Relatively low prices and a wide-open attitude towards user customization make OnePlus phones popular with the ROM crowd. They're getting a big boon today, as official CyanogenMod support comes to the smaller, cheaper OnePlus X. The X is equipped with the custom Oxygen OS, but for those who prefer the community-built ROM, CM13 is now available in nightly build flavor. The first release is up on CyanogenMod's download page right now.

Oppomart's Bogus OnePlus 3 Listing Is Not To Be Trusted, And History Makes It Obvious Why

Third-party retailers are a tempting source of information for upcoming product specifications. My theory on this is as follows: until historically recently, retail has been comprised largely of brick-and-mortar stores. In advance of major product launches and marketing initiatives, those stores often received information, media, and technical details about products weeks or even months ahead of time so as to be ready when said product became available. This is because things needed to be designed, printed, and distributed to physical locations in advance. This made retail leaks - such as weekly mailers or magazine advertisements - fairly reliable.

But in more recent years, the internet has largely obviated this system.
