Android 4.1 Now Rolling Out To The Motorola Atrix HD On AT&T

As of late, it's been apparent that Motorola has been trying to make good on its promises of offering more timely updates. The RAZR M was the first to get its bump to Jelly Bean, and was followed by the RAZR/MAXX HD. Now, it's the Atrix HD's turn.

Beginning today, AT&T and Motorola are pushing the Android 4.1 OTA to the device, which brings a handful of improvements over ICS, including Google Now, Project Butter for speed improvements, and enhanced notifications.

Republic Wireless' Dual-Band Motorola Defy XT Now Shipping

We've talked about Republic Wireless a few times 'round here at AP. From when it was first announced, to several milestones along the way - we've followed along with what's happening at RW somewhat closely.

For months, the company was in a private beta of sorts, with would-be customers signing up for their invite, and RW sending them out in waves. In November, however, the company opened its figurative doors to the world - no more waves, no beta invites.

Google-Moto And Apple Are Considering Arbitration To Resolve Their Entire Patent Dispute

After the dismissal of two of its cases against Motorola - one in Wisconsin, one in Illinois - Apple hasn't exactly been on a roll when it comes to Google's newly-purchased hardware arm. Motorola, too, hasn't done very well, with its own counterclaims in the same Illinois case also being dismissed, and by making an unexplained last-minute withdrawal of a major ITC case it was filing against Cupertino.

At the time, my first instinct when Motorola withdrew its software patent case against Apple was "settlement talks are on the table." While today's news still doesn't shed too much light on that particular event, it comes with its own bright spots of hope.

Motorola Finalizes $100 Trade-Up Program For Old Devices – Basically A Rebate Deal

When Motorola announced a few months back that it was not going to update most of its 2011 Android devices to Jelly Bean, owners were understandably upset. Moto attempted to calm the masses by offering a $100 trade-in credit. Now the details have been finalized and the program is looking much less appealing than everyone had hoped.

Eligible devices are the Droid 3, Droid X2, Admiral, Atrix 2, Atrix 4G, Cliq2, Electrify, Photon 4G, XPRT, Titanium, and Triumph.

The Motorola XOOM And Nexus S Will Almost Definitely Not Receive Android 4.2

With all the excitement of Nexus availability and the Android 4.2 source code being pushed into AOSP this morning, one little statement by Android developer JBQ regarding 4.2 device support in the AOSP announcement was easy to overlook.

-There is no support for 4.2 on Nexus S and Xoom. Those devices should continue using 4.1.2.

Yep, that (very, very likely - it's intentionally vague) means exactly what you think it does: it's the end of the road for software updates on the Nexus S and Motorola XOOM (and yes, that means all variants).

As part of a statement on the general state of software updates at Motorola, VP of Product Management Punit Soni has revealed that a new early update testing program will be unveiled, known as Test Drive.

We know it’s important for many of you to get the latest Android software upgrades onto your phones as quickly as possible. With that in mind, we’re also introducing Test Drive, a new program that will allow consumers to take our major software upgrades for a trial run and provide valuable feedback before we launch the upgrade publicly.  Starting with Android 4.2, the next iteration of Jelly Bean, we will release a preview of our software to a few hundred consumers that sign up for Test Drive.  More details on how to sign-up and participate will be announced on the blog soon.
