Carrier IQ Explains How Its Software Works, Implicitly Blames HTC For Insecure Log Files, Data Leak Exposed By Trevor Eckhart

Amid the turmoil surrounding Carrier IQ, the company's VP of Marketing, Andrew Coward, has come forward in a series of interviews with a few clarifications.

For those not in the loop, the controversy around Carrier IQ is based on developer Trevor Eckhart's findings which indicated that Carrier IQ's software was indeed collecting a vast array of information, and his demonstration showing that said data could be read using a simple command – one that could be executed by any malicious app with access to logcat. This data includes location information, SMS messages, and key taps.

Before we dive into Coward's remarks on the issue of security (and why he says CIQ is not to be blamed for insecure logs), it's important to look at how CIQ actually functions on a device.

AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Motorola, And Apple Are Also Sued Alongside HTC, Samsung, And CarrierIQ In A New Class Action Lawsuit

Yesterday, we caught early wind of two class action lawsuits filed against CarrierIQ, HTC, and Samsung in Chicago and St. Louis. You can now add a whole new class action suit to the pile, except this time it also names AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Motorola, and Apple in addition to the aforementioned three companies.

Led by law firms from Delaware and New Jersey - Sianni & Straite LLP, Eichen Crutchlow Zaslow & McElroy LLP, and Keefe Bartels L.L.C. - the lawsuit "asserts that three cell phone providers (T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T) and four manufacturers of cell phones (HTC, Motorola, Apple and Samsung) violated the Federal Wiretap Act, the Stored Electronic Communications Act, and the Federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act." CarrierIQ is not named in that quote, but it is listed in the press release's title, so don't worry - the whole gang is included.

Here's What's New In Verizon's LTE XOOM Update HLK75F (Hint: It's Not Ice Cream Sandwich)

Owner's of Verizon's LTE-enabled Motorola Xoom should be expecting an update soon, bringing system software to version HLK75F. The update is a tiny 7.8MB, and brings with it compatibility for Pay As You Go LTE service.

Verizon's informational document about the update is tacit on the subject, listing the following benefits:

  • Now offers month to month, pay as you go 4G LTE Mobile Broadband service.
  • Updated Google Setup Wizard to improve reliability of Pay As You Go detection on first device power up.

For those interested, Verizon also has a document outlining how to obtain the software update. There's no word on exactly when this update will begin rolling out, but Verizon has attached a reassuring "COMING SOON!" tags to the links leading to the update's documentation on the Xoom's system update page.

Official Photos Surface – Moto's Droid 4 Looks Like The RAZR's Smaller Cousin (With A Keyboard)

Since we first saw the Droid 4 last month, we've been waiting for more info on the phone that seems to perfect the ideas behind the Droid 3. Just yesterday, we saw official specs and a few scanned photos from a leaked Verizon document. Today, Droid Life unearthed some official press shots, showing off the Droid 4's 4" qHD display and 5-row keyboard.

We first caught a glimpse of the D4 last month, along with some suggested specs. If this leaked internal Verizon document obtained by Droid Life is to be believed, then most of the specs have now been realized.

Motorola Releases Source Code For DROID RAZR

Never one to keep its source code hidden away from the public's prying eyes (certainly more than can be said for, say, HTC), Motorola has decided to release the DROID RAZR's source code. This should make ROM development significantly easier, so hopefully we'll see a few more alternatives to MOTOBLUR pop up shortly. Devs, get on it!

Motorola Says Apple's iCloud Infringes On Patent In Germany, Presiding Judge Seems To Agree

A court in Mannheim, Germany today held a preliminary hearing in a patent dispute between Motorola Mobility and Apple Sales International (a European Apple distribution subsidiary), and it seems like Apple's on the ropes.

While the hearing didn't discuss the particular merits of Motorola's patent infringement claim against Apple, the presiding judge issued substantial blows to Apple's defense by indicating that he believed the patent-in-suit was ripe for trial. The judge also seemed to agree with Motorola's reading of that patent (also known as "construction claims") in important ways that would allow it a broader scope of applicability at trial.

The judge did not seem interested in many of Apple's defenses, such as Motorola's claim lacking specificity, the patent in question being invalid, or that the patent should be construed more narrowly.
