Google Gets The Thumbs-Up From The EU To Acquire Motorola, Still Waiting On US, Chinese Approval

Google just got one step closer to finalizing its acquisition of Motorola Mobility with approval from the 27-member European Union. Google still needs approval from the U.S. and China, as well as a few other key jurisdictions, before it can bring Motorola into the fold, but at the moment things are looking rosy for the Big G.

The EU did express some hesitations about the deal, however. EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia had this to say in a statement to the press:

"This merger decision should not and will not mean that we are not concerned by the possibility that, once Google is the owner of this portfolio, Google can abuse these patents, linking some patents with its Android devices.

Update: You can download a batch script to root your DROID 4 now (you'll need to have USB debugging and Unknown Sources enabled in the Application settings menu). Find the file on this page, and if you can spare it, take the time to donate to Dan Rosenberg for finding the exploit. All proceeds will go directly to charity, in this case, the American Red Cross.

Widely known and respected security researcher Dan Rosenberg has evidently uncovered a root method for the Droid 4, in addition to a universal Motorola root method. Though the Droid 4's root access was discovered less than a day after its release, both exploits are being withheld until a $500 bounty is raised.

A little over two years ago, a phone hit the scene that changed Android forever. That phone was, of course, the Motorola Droid. It almost single-handedly put Android on the map. Its QWERTY slider made it one-of-a-kind, and Android 2.0 was the hottest thing smoking. Fast-forward two years and three keyboarded QWERTY Droids later, and what do we have? The newest generation of Does, the Droid 4.

While some may argue that past Droids have been a letdown, The D4 fulfills many, if not all, of the requests made of the Droid line (on paper, at least). It's fast. It's sleek.

Motorola Laying Blame On Hardware Variation For Slow Updates Is Missing The Point - Carriers Are The Real Culprits (In The US, At Least)

Earlier today, when I read comments from Motorola executive Christy Wyatt over on PCMag explaining that lagging software updates could be blamed in large part on hardware variation, my first response was "really?" Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Motorola has iterated so much hardware in the last year that it has actually promised to cut down on the number of versions of Android handsets it will make.

Specifically, Wyatt made a point of the obvious fact that when Google releases the source code for Android, the only devices it will readily compile on fall into the "Nexus" category.

[Update: Rolling Out Now] Verizon Making Ready Update 6.12.173 For The Droid RAZR/MAXX, Should Begin Rolling Out Soon (No, It's Not ICS)

Update: The word on the street is that this update should be hitting devices today. Hit Settings > About phone > System updates to see if it's available on your device.

An update to the support docs for the Droid RAZR/MAXX just hit hit Verizon's site with details of an upcoming OTA update that should be hitting the airwaves sometime soon. While this doesn't bring Android 4.0 to Moto's newest flagship, it does bring a handful of other useful fixes and tweaks:

Applications:
+  Mobile Hotspot will now successfully allow other devices to connect to all
Internet websites.
+  Improvements in the Mobile Hotspot security.

Verizon LTE Xoom Is Getting An Update (HLK75H), But It's Not Ice Cream Sandwich Yet

Yes, we were excited too, but it looks like owners of Verizon's LTE Xoom still have to wait a bit for ICS. The tablet is about to receive a software update (HLK75H) "soon". Verizon's support page doesn't specify when. There's not much to the update, though. Your tablet will now support dual International Mobile Subscriber Identities (IMSI), as well as a bugfix for restoring data connectivity after exiting Airplane Mode.

In other words, this update is for the subset of the already small group of people who own Verizom Xooms that use their tablets for frequent international travel. Meanwhile, the rest of us are still waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich to land on the LTE Xoom.
