US Cellular, come on down: you're the next contestant on The Price Is Free. We've seen the first over-the-air update roll in for Moto X models on T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T, and now Motorola has posted details on a nearly identical upcoming update for US Cellular. That will probably makes Verizon the last major carrier to apply the Moto X update. Try not to act too shocked.

As you can see, the 139.12.57 follows the updates for other carriers point-for-point.

Hey you. Yes, you, the bitter, angst-ridden Verizon customer who's upset that you've got a snowball's chance in Hell of getting the next Nexus machine on Big Red. Let me console you with deals on a pair of new flagship devices: one that's got pretty much the same guts as the upcoming Nexus, and one that has software that looks kinda like a Nexus. Sort of. If you squint a bit.

If you've been eyeing up the Moto X, today might be the day to jump on it. All Moto maker orders today will include a free Motorola Skip and a pair of SOL REPUBLIC Jax earbuds. Because this is only for Moto Maker purchases, that means it's limited to AT&T customers.

The items will be added to your cart automatically at checkout and discounted to zero bucks. However, you can't make any color substitutions – you get chalk-colored headphones and a black Skip.

The online-only T-Mobile variant of the Moto X was the first to get the surprise update, followed quickly by Sprint. Now AT&T is next out of the gate, leaving Verizon trailing behind. We probably could have pre-written this, and maybe we did. You'll never know.

Motorola has a more economical alternative to the flagship X on the way, referred to in a previous FCC filing and a few Republic Wireless documents as the "Motorola DVX." A revised Permissive Change filing with the Federal Communications Commission has revealed a few more photos of the device itself, including the assembled front and rear. According to Reddit user Danrant, the update is for compatibility with advanced hearing aids.

The DVX is a dead ringer for the Moto X, looking basically identical to the slightly older phone in the filing documents except for a speaker module flipped to the left side on the rear panel.

Let me just start by saying that I like the DROID Maxx and DROID Mini. Why conclude a review before I begin it? Because so many people have already concluded that they cannot like these phones. Motorola's new devices have proven incredibly polarizing among enthusiasts, especially to Google and Android diehards who held on till the bitter end to a fantasy (and that is what it was) that the company would come to the rescue of marginalized power users.

So the Moto X "Lazy Phone" ads are the best smartphone-related ones out right now. They're both funny and memorable, which is basically 90% of what a commercial really needs to be a success. The remaining 10% consists of reasons to choose one product over another. The original Lazy Phone videos showed how competitors' phones could ruin a romantic night, cause you to miss taking a photo of your child's stellar performance, or be the person whose phone won't stop buzzing during a meeting.

The T-Mobile Moto X got it's surprise update the other day with a couple nice fixes and enhancements, and now it's Sprint's turn to get the update. It's rolling out in stages, so mashing the update button won't do any good. Not that anyone's stopping you from trying.

The software, with the easy to remember version number 13.9.0Q2.X-116-MX-17-57-1, appears to have the same changelog we got with the T-mobile update, but here it is again anyway:

  • Camera – Improved Photo Quality: Improved capture of natural light (auto-white balance) and color accuracy for more precise exposure in outdoor and backlit scenes.

The Moto X is still rolling out to all corners of the (American) Android world, but the T-Mobile variant is getting an update that improves camera performance dramatically. The difference is noticeable in a variety of situations, most notably in backlit and low-light settings. Presumably the update will hit other Moto X variants once testing and certification is completed by the carriers.

The Moto X uses a fairly large sensor with 1.4µm pixels with an RGBC color array and F/2.4 aperture.

Republic Wireless got some well-deserved headlines last week when they announced that they would start selling the nearly brand-new Moto X on its hybrid mobile-WiFi network for $300 unsubsidized. But if that's still too expensive for you, it looks like the company intends to offer an even cheaper option, the Motorola DVX. A leaked slide for the wireless roadmap of Bandwidth.com (Republic's parent company) shows the phone coming out sometime in October.
