Motorola Xyboard 10.1/8.2 Wi-Fi Ice Cream Sandwich Update Now Available In The U.S. Via OTA

Hot on the heels of ASUS pushing out Jelly Bean to the TF300, Motorola has announced that ICS is now available for the Wi-Fi Xyboard 10.1 and 8.2.

The update should be rolling out OTA-style now, and brings a host of new features:

  • Updated Browser with faster rendering, zoom and pan: Users can also now save pages for offline reading and request desktop versions of websites.
  • Swipe to dismiss notifications and recent apps: You can now dismiss individual notifications and apps from the Recent Apps list with a simple swipe of a finger.
  • Redesigned app launcher: In All Apps launcher, you can now simply drag an app to get information about it, immediately uninstall it, or disable a pre-installed app.

Google's Motorola Files New Lawsuit Against Apple At The ITC, Seeks Import Bans On Pretty Much Everything Apple Makes

According to Bloomberg, Motorola Mobility has just filed a new lawsuit against Apple at the ITC. Now, ordinarily, we might not report on the filing of such a suit - especially when the complaint hasn't been made public (we have basically zero details). What makes this particular filing important, though, is that it is the first lawsuit filed by Motorola now that it is officially, 100% a part of Google. That's a big deal.

It means Google signed off on this action. It means Google isn't interested in playing a purely defensive role in the mobile patent wars. And while this is sort of by proxy (MMI is in many senses separate from Google), the fact that Motorola filed this suit at all says a lot.

[Updated: Initial Device List] Motorola Finally Releases Bootloader Unlock Tool, Dubbed 'Unlock My Device'

Well, well, well, look at what Motorola has done today: it released the long-awaited, often-promised bootloader unlock tool! Unfortunately, the site doesn't appear to be finished just yet, as some of the more important parts - such as FAQ and Supported Devices list - are currently kicking back a "permission denied" error. Boo!

Update: The list of devices initially supported by the unlock tool has been published. Here it is:

  • Photon Q 4G LTE - Sprint
  • Motorola RAZR developer edition - Europe
  • Motorola XOOM - Verizon
  • Motorola XOOM Wifi - Worldwide

Motorola is promising to unlock more devices in the future.

Motorola Announces September 5th Event With Verizon, The RAZR HD Is Probably, Finally Upon Us

We've just received an email from Motorola announcing an event to be held on September 5th in partnership with Verizon Wireless. We all know it's the RAZR HD, Moto. You can say it. Is it possible we'll see some other surprises from the new, leaner, meaner, Google-owed Moto? Sure, but given Verizon's inclusion on the invite, we're definitely leaning toward the HD being the star of the show.

Considering we've already seen the RAZR HD on blurrycam with full Verizon regalia, we know the device has to be ramping up for release soon. Better late than never, guys.

So you love QWERTYs. We get that. Apparently, so does Sprint and Motorola, because last month they announced the Photon Q, which is probably the most powerful QWERTY slider on the market right now.

Verizon Is Almost Ready To Roll Out ICS For The Motorola Droid 4, Global Roaming Tags Along

While Ice Cream Sandwich continues to struggle to gain significant proliferation, more and more devices are receiving the bump to Android 4.0. The latest entrant into the post-crappy-design world of Android is the Motorola Droid 4. According to Verizon's software update page, a new upgrade is on the way. In addition to bringing Android 4.0.4 and everything that entails, the software will also enable Global Roaming capabilities. This should make international travellers very happy.

As of right now, it looks like Verizon is only rolling the update out to participants in the soak test. As long as everything goes well there, the new build (6.16.217.XT894.Verizon.en.US) should roll out to everyone else before too long.

Sprint Photon Q Pre-Orders Begin Today; Will Be Available In Stores On August 19th For $199

Sprint announced the Photon Q, its first LTE device with a full QWERTY keyboard, back in late July with nary a word on pricing or availability. We've heard rumors here and there about a mid-August release, but The Now Network has finally unveiled an official release date of August 19th, as well as a price of $199 with a two-year agreement.

The Photon Q is Motorola's newest offering to the QWERTY world, and is basically an Atrix HD with a keyboard:

Googorola, Phase 1: Trim Product Lines And 20% Of Workforce, Focus On Making Just A Few High-End Products

Just three short months ago, China approved Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility, effectively finalizing the deal. Apparently, neither company is looking to waste any time, as Motorola's new Google-driven leadership has already revealed the basics of the big turnaround plan. The first step: lay off 20% of its employees (including about 1,330 in the US) and close 94 offices around the globe. Given that Moto's phone unit has only made a profit in 6 months of the last 4 years, that's not so surprising.

What is perhaps more interesting is that Googorola will cut the number of devices made to "just a few," including dropping low-end devices from the portfolio entirely.

[Update: Err, Never Mind That] Motorola Begins Teasing A New 4G LTE Device, Will Be Officially Unveiled On August 10th

Update: In what seems to be a major social media fail, Motorola does not appear to be teasing a new device after all. TechRadar spent some time chatting with a Motorola rep about the whole incident, only to find out that it was a false alarm. Oh, Motorola, why do you build us up, baby, just to let us down?

Good job, guys.

Motorola has taken to its Facebook page with a bit of a game teasing an upcoming device. The company will "give a clue each day all week and make the big reveal on [August 10th]" The first hint?

New Jelly Bean (JRO03H) Binaries Up For Nexus S/4G, Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi, And Verizon, GSM Galaxy Nexus

In a post to Google's Android Building group today, Jean-Baptiste Queru once again acted as the bearer of good tidings for developers and tweakers everywhere, announcing that "a new set of proprietary binaries for Jelly Bean are available."

The new batch of binaries includes those of the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G (Crespo and Crespo4G respectively), the latter of which we just recently saw added into the AOSP fold.

The set also includes updates to the both the GSM Galaxy Nexus (maguro), and Verizon's Galaxy Nexus (toro, which itself is ever so close to full AOSP support).

Conspicuously absent from the party is Sprint's variant of the Galaxy Nexus, but there's no surprise there.
