Update: Google has announced that the deal is official on its investor relations site, and Motorola had its say too. The deal is worth $2.91 billion, with $1.41 billion paid at closing ($660m in cash and $750m in stock). Lenovo gets 2000 patents in the deal, plus a licensing arrangement with Google. Original post follows.

Google is always doing surprising things, but this is probably not something anyone would have predicted yesterday.

Update: Well, the deal lasted the whole hour, but now it's done. You can still get $70 off through Valentine's Day.

Okay, you know the drill. Motorola is offering another deal on the off-contract Moto X, but this time the final price for the 16GB version of the device is going to be an all-time low of $299. All you have to do is register for a code in the next hour (or few minutes).

Motorola really wants you to buy a Moto X – like, a lot. After a series of $150 off holiday sales and TV promotions, the company permanently dropped the price of the device by $100. Now another sale is coming up and you can snag this killer phone for the lowest price yet, a mere $299 for the 16GB model.

If you've got a friend or family member who works for Motorola Mobility, you might want to bug them for a free discount on a new phone. A Motorola representative detailed the "Friends with Moto" program to Android Police: basically, it allows any Motorola employee to offer a $50 off coupon on the Moto X, $40 off the 16GB Moto G, or $30 off the 8GB Moto G. bringing the basic off-contract prices down to $350, $160, and $150, respectively.

Motorola has been taking advantage of the Play Store to distribute updates to a number of stock apps including the camera, Assist, and Touchless Control. Now the newest addition to the Play Store has popped up, and it's the stock Gallery app with a new coat of paint. The old one looked just like the stock Android/Nexus app, but now it has a light KitKat vibe.

Motorola announced new pricing for the long-delayed wood back option for the Moto X last week. The excitement of the $25 price point was tempered by the indeterminate release date of "coming soon." Well, it was pretty soon – the Moto X is now available with ebony, teak, walnut, or bamboo backs for just $25 extra.

This week's poll is utterly, totally subjective in nature. Our question? What are your feelings about wood? Specifically, the wood that will soon be available for order on the back of your customized Moto X.

Walnut

Motorola has introduced three options - ebony, teak, and walnut, alongside the existing bamboo, bringing the total number of plant-based backplate options up to four. Real wood comes at a cost of just $25 over the standard X, which seems downright reasonable, if I do say so myself.

Motorola has just announced the much anticipated expansion of its wood finishes for the Moto X. The Walnut, Teak and Ebony versions of the device will be available on January 21st for an extra $25. If you're more of a minimalist person, the bamboo version of the Moto X has been dropped to $25 starting today.

The Bamboo option debuted a few weeks ago at $100, so the price drop to $25 might annoy those who dropped the cash already.

Wow - Google just decided to drop a [small] bomb on us this morning, a la the Google Play Edition Moto G, available immediately on the US Play Store website.

The 8GB model will cost the same $179 that it does at 3rd party retailers for the Motorola version, and the 16GB edition is a mere $20 more, at $199. We definitely didn't see that one coming today!

The device features the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz quad-core processor, quad-band HSPA+ connectivity, and 4.5" 720p display as it was originally unveiled with.

Motorola's Moto X is making the trip to Europe, and while it isn't packing everything into its suitcase in time for launch (such as Moto Maker), it will still be the same phone we already know and love when it hits store shelves in France, Germany, and the UK come February 1st. The device will sell for £380 or 399 euros unlocked with British customers also able to snag one up on contract starting at £25 a month.
