In preparation for the Droid 2 and Droid X launch, Verizon has put out its first commercial, in the best Droid traditions, complete with the "Droid" sound at the end.

Did you even notice how much information this video just provided? Besides the flashing X symbol, pointing at the model being advertised, can you spot all the other easter eggs? Switch to full screen and up the video quality to 480p to see the details better.

The latest version of the popular CyanogenMod has been released, offering bug fixes and various improvements over the previous version.

If you’ve never used the Cyanogen ROM before, you can read our full review and installation guide here.

Available to download for the Nexus One, Droid, Dream and Magic, CM 5.0.8 sees some great speed increases on older devices that were still a little sluggish under the previous version.

A particularly noticeable addition to 5.0.8 is ADW Launcher, a home replacement app, which is now included in the ROM by default.  Accompanying this is 720p video recording support, which we first saw appear in CM5.0.8-test3 earlier this month.

Droid 2 Sneak Peak: First Impressions

One of Gizmodo's readers Zack unexpectedly stumbled upon an upcoming Motorola Droid 2 at a tech show and didn't hesitate to snap some pictures and play around with this Droid successor.

Here are the main points of his review, in my favorite bullet point style, to save you some time:

  • about the same size as the original Droid
  • dark chrome overall color instead of the black
  • feels really nice - more curves, fewer edges
  • different button placement as the original, both on the outside and on the keyboard
  • blue coloring around the keyboard instead of gold
  • there is now a dedicated voice search button on the keyboard and the horrible d-pad is gone, replaced by cursor keys
  • no more lip on the right side with phone open
  • the Droid 2 name might change - Motorola reps are unsure of what it will be yet
  • same 5MP camera, though noticeable faster
  • most likely will come with vanilla Froyo - not Ninjablur
  • 8GB internal memory, 8GB micro-SD card
  • 1GHz processor

I am a summer intern at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA) this summer and today there was a tech show on the lab.

We’ve been hearing a number of things about the upcoming Droid X in the past few weeks, and Verizon have now updated their Droid site, giving us a few more details about their latest and greatest device.

The page confirms three things that we already suspected of the device. Firstly, it has a 4.3” display, most likely with a resolution of 854 x 480. Originally, when you hovered over the phone, you were told that it has a “720p screen”.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news releases regarding the HTC Aria, you know that AT&T will once again be locking down the apps users can install by restricting unofficial app downloading. If you’ve been paying attention for a while now, you also know that they did the same thing to the Motorola Backflip – the only other Android phone they offer.

Both phones already feature smaller, lower def screens, when compared to their Android brethren available on other networks.

Mark Your Calendars: Motorola, Verizon, Google, And Adobe Set To "Unleash The Next Generation Of Droid" - Is Froyo Also Joining The Party?

In exactly a week, on June 23rd, the 4 giants of the Android world - Motorola, Verizon, Google, and Adobe are set to announce something really great, dubbed "the next generation of Droid" at a special invitation-only press event in New York.

We can only guess what the event will touch on - surely, Droid X and Droid 2 are at the top of the list.

However, noting the presence of Adobe, it makes us wonder whether something much-much bigger is coming, i.e.

This is certainly one of the worst kept mobile secrets in a while. It seems we can barely go more than a few days without more Droid X/Xtreme/Shadow or Droid 2 pictures leaking. In this case, it seems Mr. Blurrcam is on vacation and let his high resolution counterpart take a few more pictures of the Droid X.

There’s not a whole lot of new information at this point, but that’s to be expected considering the rate at which we’ve been seeing leaks.

With details of the Motorola Droid 2 starting to find their way into the outside world, we now have photos and specifications of the new device, thanks to Droid Life!

Aesthetically, it doesn’t look like much has changed from the original Droid that we all know and love. The exterior remains mostly the same apart from the slide out keyboard, which is the only part of the device that appears to be significantly different.

If you thought that the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip used in the Nexus One and EVO 4G was fast, try this on for size!

Speaking at the Executives Club of Chicago yesterday, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha discussed the company’s plans to release a smartphone with a 2GHz processor before the end of the year.

Although Jha didn’t go into specific details about Motorola’s plans, it’s certainly exciting to hear about the rapid pace of development in the smartphone market, especially whilst it’s still in its infancy.

XT720_dyn_R_horiz_CAMCAP

This may have not been the biggest cell phone announcement of the day, but Motorola has officially unveiled the Motorola Milestone XT720, a Europe-bound phone that looks like, but apparently isn’t, a Motorola Motoroi.

XT720_Dyn_L_horiz_HDMI_Capture

According to Engadget, this phone is a ‘sister phone’ of the Motorola Motoroi, an Android phone that launched in Korea earlier this year. The specs are similar, though I’ve been reading conflicting reports on what exactly the Milestone XT720 is packing.
