[Update: Moto G5 too] Motorola releases the kernel source code for the Moto G5 Plus

Motorola's Moto G5 Plus came out not too long ago. Meeting with positive reviews, it kept the crown as the king of budget phones. It packs in a lot of good specs for a low price point, which is a well-known hallmark of the G series. As seems to be the company's trend lately, Motorola has released the kernel source code for the capable device.

The Moto G5 Plus is not eating SIM cards, people just need to pay more attention

We've gotten a few reports in recent days that Motorola's latest budget phone is hungry. Hungry for what, you may ask? SIM cards. Several reviews on Amazon allege the G5 Plus SIM card tray is defective and causes SIM cards to become lodged in the phone. Having a Moto G5 Plus at the ready, I'm struggling to figure out how anyone can get this wrong.

Moto G5 Plus review: Still the king of budget phones

Motorola has gone through some big changes in the last few years; from its waning days of independence (with crummy phones), to the Google acquisition (with much better phones), and finally to being manhandled by Lenovo (with weird phones). One of Motorola's most important products through all of this has been the Moto G. The original Moto G boosted interest in budget devices by showing everyone they don't have to be terrible. Now, here we are with the fifth iteration—the Moto G5 Plus, a phone that can be yours for the low, low price of $230.

The Moto G5 Plus looks and feels more premium than past devices in the series, but it also comes with a few limitations that keep it slotted in firmly below the Moto Z family.

Moto G5 Plus and Alcatel A30 join Amazon's ad-toting Prime Exclusive line for $184.99 and $59.99, respectively

In late June of last year, Amazon introduced its Prime Exclusive program, which offered unlocked phones to Prime members at a discount in exchange for a few Amazon apps and ads on them. It was a rather intriguing concept, and it's proven to be a success. David even used a BLU R1 HD in $60 Prime Exclusive guise for a month to see how a smartphone that cheap would fare. Now, Amazon is releasing another $60 Prime Exclusive phone in the form of the Alcatel A30, as well as the not-$60 Moto G5 Plus.

MWC 2017 is over, and now we all know what was unveiled. Sony, Motorola, LG, Nokia, BlackBerry Huawei, and others all unveiled new smartphones ranging from the most basic to flagship-level, and this weekend's poll will have you pick among some of the most prominent contenders for a winner.

To give you a brief rundown, the highlights were: the LG G6, Sony's Xperia XZ Premium, BlackBerry's KeyONE, Huawei's P10, Nokia's various Android phones (and the 3310), and Moto's G5 and G5 Plus.

Between them, who do you think came away with the lion's share of the glory?

Moto G5 Plus hands-on: The best budget phone gets better, but not in all the ways we wanted

The Moto G5 Plus renews Motorola's commitment to providing a premium smartphone experience at a fraction of the cost of more expensive flagship phones. Starting at just $229 here in the US for the 2GB/32GB, you get a super-efficient Snapdragon 625 processor, 5.2" 1080p LCD, micro SD slot, Turbo charging, fingerprint scanner, and Android 7.0 with Motorola's very light skin.

All in all, once again, it seems like Motorola's brought the value with the G series, and I spent some time with the G5 Plus here at MWC yesterday. My initial impressions are largely positive: the new aluminum frame is sturdy, the phone feels plenty quick, and Motorola's UI remains as close to stock Android as you can get this side of a Google Pixel.
