Droid-X-Gingerbread-rooted-300x203

UPDATE: According to Droid Life, the update should start tonight, but it may just be a "soak test", for users that signed up via Motorola's support forums. That's not entirely confirmed at this point, so if you happen to get the update, drop us a line.

A couple of notes from Motorola about the update:

  • The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning.

alltel-carrier

It looks like it's Android season in Alltel country, because four new handsets have just dropped on the regional provider's network. As of right now, Alltel customers can choose between the Motorola Milestone X - most of us know this one as the Droid X, the LG Axis - a low-end phone with a full slide-out QWERTY, the Samsung Gem - a tiny Froyo starter phone, and the HTC Merge - a mid-range Froyo device with a slide-out QWERTY.

What an absolutely insane week it has been for unlocking encrypted and signed hardware!

Update: How disappointing - nenolod turned out to be a fraud, and the whole thing was a hoax. It seemed too good to be true, and it was.

First, the Thunderbolt, which turned out to be HTC's most closed off device ever, was cracked wide open by team AndIRC within days after release, including our own Justin Case (jcase), Jamezelle, scotty2, and others.

Based on the press release and official video, Verizon's new VZ Navigator VX is awesome. Really awesome. Potentially better than Google Maps 5/Google Navigation - and yes, I can hardly believe I'm saying that either, since the new GMaps combo provides a hell of a punch. But check out the short (just over two minutes) promo video, and you'll see what I mean:

Two major items of note there: first, assuming everything works, then big red did a hell of a job on the app.

Introduction

This contest is now over. We have selected the winners - see if you are one of them towards the bottom of the page.

Remember Trident Case, the company that produced the excellent Cyclops case for the EVO 4G? Well, it turns out that very manufacturer has a whole lot more cases in its inventory, including the following beauties:

From left to right: the Cyclops case for the Samsung Vibrant, the Kraken case for the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Kraken case for the Motorola Droid X

As good as they are, however, there will be those of you reluctant to hand over $34.95 for a case to protect your phone, which is understandable in these tough economic times.

With the cheapest one costing $149.99, Verizon's Droids aren't exactly stocking stuffers, but at least the price comes with double the value now. That's right - the infamous BOGO (buy one, get one free) deal has now been extended to the carrier's flagship Android devices... all except the Droid Pro, that is. Additionally, the original Droid 2 is excluded from the ad despite being part of the deal, most likely because its global brethren already appears in the ad.

Wow... that's the only word I have to describe what Amazon Wireless pulled this morning. Amazon and Wirefly oftentimes offer killer deals compared to the carriers (like yesterday's $50 Droid Pro Wirefly deal), but this one is just ridiculous. All of the Droid phones, including the newly released Droid Pro, are exactly 1 penny over at Amazon Wireless for new Verizon customers:

In addition to the free 2-day shipping and the absence of any tax, all activation fees related to establishing a new account are waived.

This isn't the first time the Droid X has had its source code revealed to the world, but it's a first for the frozen yogurt kind (MotoBlur-ridden as it may be). That's right - despite some acknowledged issues with the update, Motorola has decided the pressure of the GPLv2 license was too much to bear and handed over the source code for the Droid X's FroYo update. Hackers, developers, and anyone else interested, tinker away!

realHDMI

On September 30, developer gman announced he would be pulling his popular Droid X app Real HDMI from the market. Now, it looks like that time has come and gone, as the app is no longer available for download from the Market, AppBrain, or anywhere else (as far as we can tell). He provides 3 main reasons for having done so:

Issue #1 = Droid X 2.2 is broke and I can't fix it.
