Motorola Finalizes $100 Trade-Up Program For Old Devices – Basically A Rebate Deal

When Motorola announced a few months back that it was not going to update most of its 2011 Android devices to Jelly Bean, owners were understandably upset. Moto attempted to calm the masses by offering a $100 trade-in credit. Now the details have been finalized and the program is looking much less appealing than everyone had hoped.

Eligible devices are the Droid 3, Droid X2, Admiral, Atrix 2, Atrix 4G, Cliq2, Electrify, Photon 4G, XPRT, Titanium, and Triumph. If you have one of these, you're in the program. Rather than offering you a discount on the purchase of your new phone, this is basically a glorified rebate.

DROID RAZR HD And RAZR M Developer Edition Sites Go Live - RAZR M $550, Pre-Orders Ship Week Of 9/13

Motorola has just made two sites for the developer editions of its newest phones live, and you can actually pre-order one right now. The RAZR M Developer Edition will cost you $550, which seems about right given the specifications. It will ship around September 13th, and comes in any color you like, so long as it's black.

You can also sign up for updates on the RAZR HD Developer Edition, though don't expect news on availability or pricing particularly soon - Motorola says it won't be shipping until "before the holidays." Both dev edition devices come with unlocked bootloaders right out of the box, so you can get your ROM on unhindered.

Motorola Droid X2 Set To Receive Minor Software Update To Build 1.3.418.MB870 – Here's What's In Store

Droid X2 owners should be keeping an eye out for a new OTA set to roll out "soon," bringing the device's build up to 1.3.418.MB870. The OTA is pretty light, coming in at around 35MB, and bringing a small handful of enhancements and fixes to the X2, which debuted almost one year ago. Included in the update are Verizon's Video and VZ Navigator 3D City, Google's security patch, Wireless Alerting System compatibility, and a few other small improvements.

As usual, Verizon has provided a cheat sheet with instructions on how to manually check for the update, but by now the process should sound pretty familiar: just tap Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Download.

Let's not beat around the bush here: the DROID X2 is hardly the star of Motorola and Verizon's DROID production, what with its PenTile display and CDMA-only radio. But then again, it's not a complete train wreck; and besides, who doesn't love a free phone? Oops, did I say free? I meant you actually get $50 back in the form of a gift card due to a promotion Amazon is currently running. Not bad, huh?

As you can see, that's precisely (or at least almost precisely) what Amazon's mobile division, Amazon Wireless, is doing: it's now selling the DROID X2 for just one cent with a new two-year VZW contract.

Update: If @VZWSupport is to be believed (and after yesterday's Galaxy S II fiasco, I have my doubts), then the update should be rolling out beginning today, reaching all DX2 owners by the end of the week.

When the Droid X2 first hit the street, most would-be owners were extremely disappointed when they found out that it didn't ship with Gingerbread. For some, this was a deal-breaker, but others stuck it out and bought the device anyway, hoping for an OTA update soon after.

I know, I know. The last one was under $50, and preferably free. But in our attempt to keep you updated with the latest and greatest deals on the latest and greatest devices, we had to make sacrifices. Motorola Droid X2 Gets 2nd-Init Support, Opens The Gate For Custom ROMs

The technology that allowed custom ROMs like CyanogenMod on the Droid X/2 and Atrix - 2nd-Init - has now been ported to the Droid X2 by XDA forum member edgan. According to the source thread, it was a direct port from the Atrix, as the code was not modified whatsoever, only re-compiled.

Before I go any further, let's get one important piece of information out of the way: this does not unlock the bootloader or allow custom kernels; it simply brings full custom ROM support.

This is still in very early stages of development, so it's recommended that the average Joe leave it be until devs can spend a little more time with it.

Netflix this evening appears to have quietly unleashed the Android app on 16 more previously unsupported devices, all without updating the application at all.

The whole situation threw us off quite a bit, as the Netflix app description now lists both the new devices and a reference to a new version 1.3, while the app itself is still stuck at 1.2.2.

Nevertheless, after trying to find it in the Market using devices that were previously unsupported (HTC EVO 3D and Thunderbolt), to our pleasant surprise, we succeeded. So... it seems that Netflix indeed simply updated the list in the Market publishing console without updating the app at all, which means it was compatible with all of them all along.

I'm not sure why anyone would want the DROID X2 (our own Aaron Gingrich didn't exactly love it, either - and that's putting it nicely.) But, some people do seem to like the X2 - probably most owners upgrading from the original X. Why? Because it looks and feels exactly the same. So, if you want this Motorola monster, now's a decent time to get it - as it's just $100 with a new Verizon account on Wirefly or AmazonWireless.

The X2 is packing an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch qHD display (some people hate qHD for its Pentile subpixel rendering), 512MB of RAM, and an 8MP rear shooter.
