Verizon customers will want to keep an eye on their inboxes today, as big red has begun sending emails to select customers offering a free upgrade to Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, Stratosphere, or Motorola's Droid RAZR with a new 2-year agreement.

The email is presumably being sent out to those customers who have a 3G-only plan, or who haven't made the jump to a smartphone yet, judging by the following snippet of text, though it's hard to be certain exactly who qualifies for the deal.

“There’s never been a better time to move to 4G LTE – Upgrade to your FREE 4G LTE smartphone today!”

The Next Web rightly notes that while the offer may seem bold for offering customers discounts between $99 and $299, it is likely that promoting 4G data plans will pull in enough cash to make the deal worthwhile.

A mysterious post showed up on the Droid RAZR forums yesterday containing a whole slew of screenshots of the Droid RAZR running Ice Cream Sandwich. The original poster left no information about the build, nor did s/he reply to the gaggle of questions that followed the leak. Known only as dragon974, the poster seemingly vanished after dropping the goods.

While this leak gives us a good look at what ICS on the Droid RAZR should look like, there have been some questions concerning its validity. According to several of the replying comments in the thread, including one from well-known Android modder P3Droid, these shots are said to be completely authentic.

Update: The word on the street is that this update should be hitting devices today. Hit Settings > About phone > System updates to see if it's available on your device.

An update to the support docs for the Droid RAZR/MAXX just hit hit Verizon's site with details of an upcoming OTA update that should be hitting the airwaves sometime soon. While this doesn't bring Android 4.0 to Moto's newest flagship, it does bring a handful of other useful fixes and tweaks:

Applications:
+  Mobile Hotspot will now successfully allow other devices to connect to all
Internet websites.
+  Improvements in the Mobile Hotspot security.

Nothing says 'love' like a sleek new Android device, and when it comes to sleek, few meet the very essence of the word the way the Motorola RAZR does. It's fast. It's thin. It's a RAZR. And we have a couple to give away, courtesy of GetJar, the home of GetJar Gold and top-notch free apps.

Free apps. Free phone. What more do you need? Oh, yeah. Details.

This contest is now over. Here are our winners, selected at random:
  • Steve Dadolf
  • David Carr (chambo622)

Congratulations, guys - all of you will be contacted for your information in the near future!

When it comes to high tech, downsizing is often looked at as a sign of progress. Microprocessors meant whole computers, for the first time, could fit on a desktop. LCD displays made them portable - in the form of laptops. Moore's law proved that chips that once would have been classified as capable of enterprise-level computing now occupy devices that easily fit in your pocket. And advanced lithium-ion batteries meant you could finally take yourself off the AC teat for an appreciable amount of time, and you could charge your gadgets over and over without worrying about the ridiculous cycling fatigue that plagued earlier rechargeable systems.

Over the weekend, we found out about Moto's upcoming dev-friendly version of the RAZR, its first device with an unlockable bootloader. What we didn't have, however, were any details about how the unlock process would work, how it would affect the warranty, and so on. Moto has now posted the details answering many of those exactly questions, and there's one thing for sure - it doesn't look like it's going to be as good as it sounds.

How it will work

Since this is a developer device, the process will be the exact same as the Nexus devices. It looks a little something like this (requires ADB):

  • Reboot into Fastboot Flash Mode by holding power+volume down.

Motorola announced today through its official community blog that a RAZR "Developer Edition" (evidently based on the original Droid RAZR, not its newer MAXX counterpart) is in the works. The dev-friendly device will carry an unlockable bootloader and is poised to hit European markets relatively soon, with a (yet unspecified) unlockable device bound for the U.S. "in the coming months." Oddly enough, the blog post was pulled (perhaps it was published prematurely; Update: it's live once again), but luckily the text of the post has been retained:

New Motorola RAZR™ Developer Edition will feature unlocked bootloader in Europe

We have some news for the community of people interested in unlockable/relockable bootloaders.

As promised, the ultra-impressive DROID RAZR MAXX went on sale today, but for a premium price of $300 with a new two-year contract at Verizon. Not so, says Wirefly, who is charging just $230 for the thin-yet-juiced phone.

What's so special about the MAXX? It's nearly the same as the DROID RAZR, but with one major difference: it's nearly 2mm thicker (for a total thickness of a still-svelte 9mm) to accommodate a whopping 3,300 mAh battery (versus 1,780 in the non-MAXX version).

Definitely sounds like a winner, especially for power users and road warriors. Hit up the source link below to see the product page yourself or to order the phone.

Update 1/26/12: The MAXX is now live on VZW (thanks, Vinoth):

If you were following along with us and the action of CES, then you undoubtedly caught the announcement of the Droid RAZR MAXX, an 8.99 mm thin beast packing a 3,300 mAh battery that will likely outlast you in terms of needing to recharge. While it is nearly 2 mm thicker than the original Droid RAZR, it is still incredibly thin for how long the battery lasts. It can supposedly blast through 21 hours of straight talk time, and considering the fact that any sane person doesn't talk on the phone for 21 hours straight, the battery will definitely keep you up and running during a day of heavy use.

When the words Blur and Android 4.0 meet in the same sentence, it's cringe-inducing for most users. Let's be honest here, that's a justified reaction. Blur pretty much sucks.

For the time being, anyway.

A leaked ICS ROM for the international version of the RAZR showed up earlier today with full Blur intact and, surprisingly enough, it doesn't look too bad. It retains more of a stock look than previous version of Blur, with seemingly few modifications made to the homescreens and app drawer. The icons have been blur-ified (yuck) and the lockscreen has undergone a makeover, which actually seems like it might be an improvement over the current ICS lockscreen; it displays four apps to open (instead of just "unlock" and "camera"), along with a silencer at the top - a feature that I've missed on my Galaxy Nexus.
