The Verizon support docs were recently updated with information on a new OTA that should start hitting Droid 2 Global devices within the coming days (if not sooner). While the update isn't anything major, it still brings some notable enhancements to the D2G:

Device Features

  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • A Google Security Patch has been added to improve security level.
  • Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.
  • Adjusted camera settings will be saved, even after the device is powered down.
  • Resolved possible device resets while playing music.
  • Reduced Out of Memory errors.

Email, Messaging, and Data

  • Improved ability to access and receive Gmail messages when the Mobile Hotspot is turned on.

Although the Gingerbread update for the Droid 2 Global was supposed to begin in mid-June, we've yet to see an official release hit the air. Every time another device gets Gingerbread, I can hear the D2G owners across the nation asking when it will be their turn, and it looks like we can finally answer that question: now.

While it may not be the official build, there is a definitely a leaked version floating around RootzWiki courtesy of aceoyame, that's looks to be a somewhat final build. The entire first part of the thread is dedicated to figuring out whether the bootloader is locked, but unfortunately, it was determined that it is, so you can skip past all of that.

Though Verizon would have you believe that Gingerbread is already rolling out to DROID 2 Globals around the world, Motorola is apparently riding a different train of thought entirely - according to a manager on their support forums, the update isn't quite ready yet.

Misinformation indeed. Let the inevitable kerfuffle begin!

Update: According the official VZW Support Twitter account, it looks like the update should be available sometime today. You can check for the update manually by hitting Settings > About Phone > System Updates, and don't forget to shoot us a tip when it hits your device. Let the frantic update-checking begin!

Motorola just released the Gingerbread update for the Droid X two weeks ago, and now it looks like the same update may be ready for the Droid 2 Global (sorry original D2 owners, you'll have to sit this one out). According to Droid-Life, the initial "soak test" could start as early as the end of the week for some lucky users.

What an absolutely insane week it has been for unlocking encrypted and signed hardware!

Update: How disappointing - nenolod turned out to be a fraud, and the whole thing was a hoax. It seemed too good to be true, and it was.

First, the Thunderbolt, which turned out to be HTC's most closed off device ever, was cracked wide open by team AndIRC within days after release, including our own Justin Case (jcase), Jamezelle, scotty2, and others.

This morning, however, we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel for devices that have been uncracked for many months - namely, Motorola Milestone and possibly Droid X, Droid 2, Charm, and other devices from the Sholes family (this, apparently, does not include the Atrix 4G).

With the cheapest one costing $149.99, Verizon's Droids aren't exactly stocking stuffers, but at least the price comes with double the value now. That's right - the infamous BOGO (buy one, get one free) deal has now been extended to the carrier's flagship Android devices... all except the Droid Pro, that is. Additionally, the original Droid 2 is excluded from the ad despite being part of the deal, most likely because its global brethren already appears in the ad. However, why the Droid Pro is being left out of the fun is anyone's guess.2010-12-02 19h45_45

So look, Verizon's price for the Motorola Droid 2 Global is nice (or at least pretty decent for a phone loaded with a 1.2GHz processor and dual GSM/CDMA radios), but it can't stand up to the deals you and I both know Wirefly's been cooking up. Well now the Internet's largest authorized retailer of cell phones has come out and made it official - it's selling both the white and the regular versions of the phone for just $99.99 with a new two-year contract. As for add-a-line plans, you'll be coughing up $129.99 , while existing Verizon customers looking to upgrade will be handing over $149.99.

Verizon has finally announced the Motorola Droid 2 Global on the Verizon Facebook page. It may seem a bit backwards since the pre-order has been going on for a while - but now it's officially official. The D2G will be priced at $199.99 with a new two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate - which means you'll be paying $299.99 upfront.

Unlike the original Droid 2, Global owners will be provided with a SIM card so they can use the phone overseas. It will also come with a 1.2 GHz (vs. the D2's 1.0) processor which should satiate your need for speed.

It's definitely starting to feel like holiday season is winding up - a ton of devices that we've seen in the pipeline previously are now making it to market at long last. Let's take a look:

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The Verizon and Sprint versions of the Galaxy Tab have launched already, and the device will be coming to Sprint in short order (11/14) as well. Quick recap of the specs:

  • 7" 1024x600 screen
  • Both 3G and Wi-Fi
  • Android 2.2
  • 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU
  • 13.8 oz.

So far the reviews seem to be fairly mixed on the Tab. Right now, only the Verizon variant is listed at Wirefly, but we expect that to change shortly.
