LG Spectrum 2 On Verizon Gets An OTA Update To Version VS93022A That Mostly Deals With Bloatware

Verizon is currently issuing OTA updates to a number of its midrange handsets. Yesterday we reported on an update rolling out to the LG Lucid, and now it's the LG Spectrum 2's turn. The Spectrum 2's update isn't exactly more exciting than the Lucid's was, but it's nice to see both devices getting some love.

This latest update primarily deals with all the bloatware that comes pre-installed on the device. While you may be happy to know that Verizon Remote Diagnostics will be gone following the reboot, much of what remains is getting bumped up. My Verizon Mobile, VZ Navigator, Verizon Daily Scoop, and Real Racing 2 have all been updated, and a number of enhancements have found their way into Visual Voice Mail.

Verizon Updates Spectrum 2 Support Docs, Jelly Bean Incoming (Build VS93021B)

Looks like Verizon's on a roll – two OTAs in the same day! Earlier today, it updated the support docs for the original Stratosphere with details of an upcoming incremental update, and now it looks like Jelly Bean is getting ready to hit the airwaves on its way to the LG Spectrum 2.

Aside from Jelly Bean goodies, the update also packs a few fixes and tweaks:

+ Weather application and widget have been updated
+ NFC LG Tag+ help has been improved
+ Brightness option has been moved to notification panel for global access
+ Browser now loads Google account bookmarks
+ Improved readability for email conversation
+ Optimized Bluetooth® connect/disconnect and audio stream switching implementations
+ User can back up contacts when the SIM is swapped to a new device
+ Preloaded widgets including Social+, Today+, Finance, News and Power Control have been removed

Once Big Red updates its support docs, that usually means an OTA is imminent – this one should likely start heading out sometime this week.

LG Spectrum 2 Review: Verizon's Mid-Range Handset War Just Got More Interesting

If you're a Verizon Wireless customer, and you're not looking to spend over $100 or so on an Android smartphone, your options aren't exactly limited at this point. If you want one that's relatively current, though, the RAZR M and Incredible 4G are basically your choices, one of which we actually really liked.

Both of those phones, though, by modern Android smartphone standards, are relatively small, with 4-4.3" qHD displays. For some, such a size may actually be desirable - there have always been a steady stream of complaints about the growing dimensions of Android phones. I, too, often wonder if this is indicative of a larger trend (pun intended), or if it is merely a symptomatic of some subtle problem with the current touchscreen interaction paradigm.

Verizon Announces The Spectrum 2 By LG For $99 After Mail-In-Rebate

About a week ago, we got a look at the LG Spectrum 2 and all of its innards thanks to Best Buy. Now, Verizon has made it official. It's not going to rock any socks off, but for $99 after mail-in-rebate and a new two-year contract, it's really not a bad piece of kit:

  • 4.7" True HD 1280x720 IPS display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB storage, microSD card slot
  • Global Ready
  • 8MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
  • Android 4.0

It's not winning any awards for most stylish, best all around, or... anything else, for that matter. But it is a solid mid-ranger that might fit the bill perfectly for anyone looking for a new device that packs a punch and won't break the bank.
