Just a week or so after the CyanogenMod ROM team expanded its support for LG's Optimus G flagship, another high-end smartphone has been added to the mix. The Optimus 4X HD (also known as the P880) just showed up on the official CyanogenMod servers, in a 10.1 (Android 4.2) build no less. Right now there are only two builds posted, but that should increase fairly quickly, and the Tegra 3 internals mean that the CyanogenMod developers will be on familiar ground.

LG has never been a company particularly well-known for its smartphones. And the occasional notoriety the company has received for its Android-powered hardware has rarely been positive. The original Ally, for example, despite its Iron Man-marketing and substantial launch hype, turned out to be an unremarkable, painfully slow phone. The next handset from LG to attract much attention (in the US, at least) was the G2X (or Optimus 2X, internationally). It too failed to gain much in the way of critical acclaim, and customers found the phone laden with major usability bugs.

As promised by LG back in May, its top of the line quad-core Optimus 4X HD is now seeing release in Europe. First seen at MWC in February, this is set to take on the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X for the favor of powerhouse-craving phone shoppers throughout the continent. The device is now available for purchase from Amazon DE in either black or white, both close to the €500 mark.

LG has officially announced its foray into the quad-core smartphone space, with the launch of the Android 4.0 Optimus 4X HD. Unveiled just prior to MWC in February, the smartphone features NVIDIA's latest Tegra 3 Quad-Processor clocked at 1.5GHZ, with the 4-PLUS-1 architecture. Additionally, the device will have a:

  • 4.7" (720p) True HD IPS display
  • 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front shooter
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB onboard storage
  • 2150 mAh battery
  • Razor thin 8.9mm thickness
  • SHSPA+ 21Mbps connectivity

LG's assertion, that the 2,150mAh battery on the Optimus 4X HD is the biggest amongst quad-core smartphones, might be technically true as the Droid RAZR MAXX (sporting a massive 3,300 mAh battery) has only two cores.

LG has officially unveiled the Optimus 4X HD, a rather impressive Ice Cream Sandwich-powered phone which ended up being too exciting to keep under wraps until MWC.

The Optimus 4X HD features NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor (in all its 4-Plus-1 glory), and a handful of other powerful specs. A full list of specifications hasn't been released just yet (and presumably won't be until MWC), but here is what we know so far:

  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • Tegra 3 Quad-Core Processor at 1.5GHz
  • 4.7" IPS display at 720p
  • 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front shooter
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB onboard storage
  • 2150 mAh battery
  • Razor thin 8.9mm thickness
  • SHSPA+ 21Mbps connectivity

As things stand, the Optimus 4X HD is slated to be LG's first Ice Cream Sandwich-powered phone.
