MetroPCS Announces Its Newest LTE Handset, The Huawei Premia 4G

MetroPCS, the not-yet-T-Mobile-company, just announced its newest 4G LTE handset this morning, the Huawei Premia 4G. Sounds fancy, no? Don't worry – it's just OK. But for $150, you can't expect it to be a GS4.

And a GS4 it isn't. What is it, though, is a decent mid-ranger with some specs that should live up to its buck-fiddy price tag:

4-inch 480x800 display with Gorilla Glass
1.5GHz dual-core processor
1GB RAM
5MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
Android 4.0

Nothing super special about this one, but if you're looking for a decent mid-ranger and LTE without a contract, this may be a good way to go.

Huawei announced its newest smartphone at MWC this morning, the Ascend P2. The P2 is the follow-up to the Ascend P1, which was announced at CES last year.

The P2 is packing a 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM, a 4.7" 720p display with Gorilla Glass 2 (it also works with gloves, apparently), 13MP rear camera, 2420mAh battery, Android 4.1.2 with Huawei's 'Emotion UI' (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little), and is a mere 8.9mm thin. Frankly, it's not very impressive - this is decidedly 'high end of the mid-range' hardware. More likely, Huawei's strategy with the phone (in China, at least) will be aggressive pricing.

Huawei Ascend P2 Press Shot Leaks Ahead Of Mobile World Congress

This is the time of year when we expect two things to surface in droves: leaks and rumors. With CES fading in our taillights and Mobile World Congress just around the corner, it's an interesting time for device manufacturers. And while some have already gotten their early-year announcements over with, there are those who have chosen to wait for Barcelona to unveil their newest flagships to the world.

Take Huawei, for example. A recent rumor suggests that its upcoming Ascend P2 will be quite the workhorse with some rather impressive specs:

5" IPS display
1.8GHz quad-core CPU
2GB RAM
8GB built-in storage
13MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
3000mAh battery
Android 4.1

And now, thanks to @evleaks over at Unwired View, we're getting our first glimpse of the MWC-bound handset.

We've been taking a close look at some of Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo's 2013 offerings: LG's flagship Optimus G Pro, Panasonic's similar Eluga X, and the dual-screen NEC MEDIAS W. DoCoMo announced three other phones at the same time, all of which are at the head of their manufacturer's lineups. We've already seen Sony's Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z, and Huawei's Ascend D2. Fujitsu's ARROWS X F-02E matches up to both, more or less. In the more mid-range areas are Sharp's Aquos Phone EX and a new 10-inch tablet from Huawei.

The ARROWS X F-02E (not to be confused with the earlier F-10D and F-05D models) is the latest in a smartphone family that hasn't seen much action outside of Japan.

Do you think phones should be even bigger? Good news: so does Huawei. You've probably already heard about the Mate, but we got a little hands-on time before the show floor opened last night at CES Digital Experience, and, well, it's big. Really big. And yes, we put it next to a Note II to show you just how mind-bogglingly large it is.

Note: there's some artifacting near the end of the video. Sorry about that!

As far as initial impressions, the device runs Android 4.1 with Huawei's light UI overlay quite smoothly. This is the second phone to date to use Huawei's in-house quad-core KVM processor, which is paired (interestingly) with an Intel modem (GSM 3G only).

We had heard that Huawei was going to shock the world (or at least impressionable gadget lovers) with an enormous smartphone, and they've made it official here at CES. The Ascend Mate is real, it's got a 6.1-inch screen, and it will be coming to China in February. That monster panel is a 720p IPS LCD - strangely, a lower resolution than the new 5-inch Ascend D2 - and gives the device a 73% screen-to-body ratio. Something called Magic Touch, which Huawei isn't elaborating on in the press materials, will make the screen work through gloves. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a stylus included.

For better or worse, five inches seems to be the new target for flagship Android devices. Huawei is bringing its game to CES (unlike most manufacturers that are holding back for Mobile World Congress) with the Ascend D2, a new Jelly Bean 4.1 device sporting a 5-inch 1080p LCD panel and the in-house K3V2 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU. Other highlights include a 13MP camera (narrowly beating out Alcatel's One Touch Idol Ultra) and respectable 9.9mm waist. Stylistically, it looks a lot like a beefed-up Galaxy S II, minus the physical navigation buttons.

Perhaps most importantly for power users, the Ascend D2 comes packed with a massive 3,000mAh battery, sliding in just below the Galaxy Note II in total capacity.

Every time I pick up my Nexus 7, I think to myself "you know, if this were 0.9 inches smaller, I'd definitely use it as a phone." Because there's no possible way I'd look even remotely silly holding something that large up to my head, right?

OK, that may be true about me personally, but it seems someone at Huawei had a similar train of thought, as the company is set to unveil a monstrous 6.1" 1080p phone known as the Ascend Mate at CES. Turns out Huawei CEO Richard Yu was just too damn excited to wait, as he pulled this upcoming behemoth out in front of everyone at a Huawei store on Saturday.

Huawei Shows Off The Honor 2 With 1.4Ghz Quad-Core And 2GB of RAM

Huawei has been steadily increasing its high-end offerings for the last year or so, and their latest offering is the top-of-the-line Honor 2. Last year's model gets upgraded in just about every possible way, starting with Huawei's own quad-core K3 V2 processor clocked at a blistering 1.4Ghz. Pair that with 2GB of RAM and you've got potent hardware in anybody's money... though to put down a pre-order, you'll need some yuan. Pre-orders for the Honor 2 in China will begin later this week, with a price of 1888 CNY, or about $302.

In addition to those high-class innards, the Honor 2 uses a 4.5-inch 720p IPS screen, fitting in just below other flagships.

Orange And T-Mobile UK Announce Three Android 4G Phones Ahead Of EE's Launch At The End Of This Month

Orange and T-Mobile UK, the two companies forming the new 4G EE network in the UK, have launched three 4G capable Android phones today.

That means that if you're an Orange or T-Mobile customer, you can now buy the Samsung Galaxy S III LTE, HTC One XL, or Huawei Ascend P1 LTE on contract to ensure that you're ahead of the game before 4G goes live in the UK at the end of this month.

Update: EE will launch on October 30th, as per Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE:

We are delighted to announce that the official launch of our new customer brand, EE, offering the UK’s first superfast mobile 4G and fibre broadband service, will take place on the 30th October 2012.
