Sprint Fires Up 4G in New York City, NY; Hartford, New Haven, CT; New Brunswick, Trenton, NJ; Tampa, FL

Can't say we didn't see this one coming - exactly on schedule, Sprint today officially launched its 4G WiMax service in The Big Apple. In addition to NYC, 5 other cities that went live today include Hartford and New Haven in Connecticut, New Brunswick and Trenton in New Jersey, and Tampa in good old Florida.

Epic 4G and EVO 4G users, fire up your devices and give these new networks a good test so that you can feel better about paying that $10 "premium data" fee for all those months before 4G.

Sprint And Clearwire Teaming Up To Provide WiMax In NYC Starting Nov. 1st, LA From Dec. 1st And SF By Year's End.

This news has been some time coming, but it finally looks like the time is nigh: Sprint WiMax will soon be available in three of America's hottest of hot-spots. While Sprint has had 4G-capable devices out for several months now, the country's two main technology centres have been starved of WiMax coverage. Sprint may fear the same backlash AT&T received when their network got hammered by the iPhone, so they must be hoping for a more positive reception.

The coverage itself will be provided in conjunction with Clearwire, who have been busy setting up their networks in preparation for these final deadlines.

Sprint Launches 4G In Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN And Pittsburgh, PA

Sprint continued its 4G announcement marathon this morning with the official launch of WiMax service in Minneapolis-St.Paul, MN, also known as Twin Cities, and Pittsburgh, PA. Welcome to the fast lane!

This announcement follows the Nashville 4G launch 2 weeks ago, Orlando launch last week, and the introduction of Epic 4G in the beginning of the month. Sprint’s 4G service now covers 55 markets.

Users of the only 2 aforementioned devices capable of running on Sprint’s 4G network are charged an extra $10 "premium data" fee, no matter whether 4G is available in their area or not.

HTC Launches 4 New Promotional Videos For Desire HD, Desire Z, EVO 4G, And Droid Incredible

The new HTC Desire HD and Desire Z handsets are coming very soon, and we're incredibly excited about both of them (just take a look at that 5-second Fast Boot technology again).

In order to keep our excitement going, HTC just pushed out a new video of these bad boys flying up in the air, showing themselves off in various ways. I even got slight chills a bit at the end but I think it's mostly due to the epic music selection. Have a look (don't forget to notch up the quality to at least 720P):

Next up we are surprised that HTC hasn't forgotten about the slightly older but nevertheless one of the most game changing devices of this year - the EVO 4G and its smaller brother - the Droid Incredible.

Here’s something to get your teeth into. Over at LaptopMag, a whole host of Androids have been put through their paces in a grueling battery life endurance test. The goal was to keep the phones’ screens on while doing a moderate amount of processing, namely cyclically browsing a collection of web pages. Despite the supposed power savings afforded by AMOLED screens, the phones employing that screen technology fell quite a ways behind in comparison to the traditional LCD phones.

Why is that? AMOLED is supposed to only use up power on non-black pixels, right? Well, as LaptopMag points out, the majority of webpages are actually dark text on a light background, a scenario in which AMOLED actually uses more power than an equivalent backlit LCD.

HTC Desire HD ROM Now Available For Droid Incredible, Desire, And EVO 4G

HTC's new version of Sense UI - which runs exclusively on the Desire Z and Desire HD (officially, at least) - is really shaping up to be an exception to the tradition of custom Android skins turning the operating system into a nightmare.

As of today, users of the HTC EVO 4G, the Droid Incredible, and the original GSM Desire, can thank the clever forum members over at xda-developers for five-second boot-up times they can call their own, along with all the other great features of HTC's latest skin. Unfortunately, there are still a few bugs to work out, including:

the camera - it doesn't work on any of the three devices
the dialer apparently looks "a little weird" on all three phones
the version for the Desire appears to have quite a few apps added in that aren't included in HTC's official version of the skin, like apps2SD and ADW.Launcher
WiFi is confirmed to be an issue on the EVO - getting it set up on the Desire appears to require a separate download, and we haven't been able to confirm anything regarding the Droid Incredible
4G doesn't work on the EVO

Regardless of all the above issues, the quick boot feature and those sexy new customization options are enough to push me over the edge - I know at least one EVO user who'll be spending the night flashing this here ROM!

Fresh ROM 3.3.0.1 Based On The Latest EVO 4G OTA 3.29.651.5 Now Available For Download

Last night we posted about Flipzmod3's caffeine-fueled rampage on the new OTA update for the HTC EVO. The OTA got rooted really-really fast, and now we have a fully-working, stable ROM based on it.

Last night, flipz, the author of Fresh ROM, sent out a test version of Fresh ROM 3.3.0 to all the donors/testers, and we did our job well. We nitpicked every tiny little bug, and the result is that tiny little .1 at the end of the public release flipz announced this morning, with fixes for all known bugs. Here's the changelog so you know what to expect going from Fresh 3.2 to 3.3.0.1:

Based on a new Sprint OTA (3.29.651.5)

New EVO 4G Radio v2.15.00.09.01 and PRI v1.77_003 From The 3.29.651.5 OTA Now Available - Download And Flash Away

flipz, the chef behind Fresh ROM (one of the first and still best ROMs for HTC Hero and EVO 4G) has wasted no time picking apart and giving us pieces of the new over-the-air update for the EVO. In his latest blog post, flipz gives us the new PRI v1.77_003 and the new radio v2.15.00.09.01.

If you're not too keen on what a PRI or radio are exactly, don't be ashamed. Here are the basics:

PRI: Flipz himself said it best in this quote: “… a connection between your phone and the radio… responsible for carrying both voice and data.” Essentially, updating your PRI increases the efficiency of how your handset and its radio unit talk to each other.

The New HTC EVO 4G 3.29.561.5 Update Already Rooted

Earlier, HTC and Sprint announced that they would be rolling out an update for the EVO 4G to fix some issues. Very shortly after the announcement (not the update itself, which literally went live 30 minutes ago, but the announcement of it, mind you), a rooted version of said update was released by the insane, caffeine fueled developers at XDA. Normally, after an update such as this you would have to wait for some kind dev to root the update or take advantage of Unrevoked Forever. Apparently, though, the Android community was ahead of HTC themselves in releasing the OTA update.
