First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!

Looking for a tasty little news snack before the big keynote at Google I/O tomorrow? Well, you’re in luck, because it appears that Walt Mossberg over at All Things D dropped his EVO 4G review tonight.

First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!

The review’s fairly short…it’s almost more of a preview than a proper rundown, but I’m sure the usual suspects (Engadget, Gizmodo, MobileCrunch), will cover the device in greater detail in their reviews. Until those start popping up though, what can we glean from Mossberg’s?

  • It’s fast. Walt says the phone’s 4G capability ‘offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network.’
  • 4G use significantly reduces the battery life.

Those Extra 10 Bucks/Month For HTC EVO 4G Don't Just Get You All-You-Can-Eat 4G But 3G Too

If you've been thinking of getting the newest addition to the Sprint family on June 4th, the HTC EVO 4G, you're probably aware of the new $10 charge that Sprint will be requiring of you.

However, the situation isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. In fact, you may be getting much more than you thought you were paying for.

Under the heading of "Worry-Free Pricing" in their press release, they say it plain and simple:

In order to provide the best experience, HTC EVO 4G will use Sprint's industry-leading Everything Data or Business Advantage Messaging and Data plans that include unlimited Web, texting and calling on the Sprint Network to every mobile in America with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G 2-Way Video Calling (and Qik!)

By now, we have all heard the news: Sprint announced yesterday the HTC EVO 4G will be available June 4th. Among a number of touted features, its two-way video chat capabilities are unrivaled.

With two cameras, one on either side of the phone, this device opens up new possibilities. You can take snapshots or video while watching the results in realtime, or you can turn the camera on yourself...without turning the phone around.

The primary camera boasts a whopping 8 megapixels, while the front-facing camera has a slim 1.3 megapixels. That being said, it is still an incredible feature, allowing you to video chat straight from your phone.

Thanks to our friends at phandroid.com (hey Rob!), we can now check out what was actually going on at yesterday's special 4G event Sprint held.

Of course, we now know that it was centered around EVO 4G, its pricing (with some extra gotchas), release date, and features. But how did it all go down?

Rob recorded 4 videos on his HD camcorder (nice investment, Rob), starting with Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse's keynote speech announcing EVO 4G and going into the presentations that followed.

Best Buy Starts Preorders For HTC EVO 4G, Effective Immediately

Best Buy announced minutes ago that the HTC EVO 4G, which was officially introduced by Sprint earlier today, is available for preorder from Best Buy stores effective immediately.

It looks like the preorder is available strictly at Best Buy retail locations and not online on BestBuy.com, at least for now.

The email makes no mention of the mandatory $10 monthly EVO usage fee that we reported on earlier, which is a sure recipe for some surprised and possibly not very happy customers about to head to Best Buy tomorrow.

There is also no mention of how exactly the deal is going to be handled, though from our past experience, Best Buy will likely substitute any mail-in rebates with instant credits, and take a $50 preorder deposit in the form of a Best Buy gift card.

WTF - Sprint To Charge $10/Month “You Get To Use An EVO 4G” Fee

After wiping the drool off our screens long enough to actually read Sprint’s press release for the EVO 4G, we found ourselves a bit put off by the 10$/month ‘Premium Data Charge’. Here’s the relevant excerpt from the release:

A $10 per month Premium Data add-on will apply allowing customers to take advantage of a richer data experience than ever before.

The way that the $10/month fee is presented in the press release seems to imply that it would only be applicable to those who can take advantage of Sprint’s 4G network, which is still in the process of rolling out in many parts of the country.

Sprint users: have you ever wanted to call somebody or video chat, while surfing the web, all at the same time? With the HTC EVO 4G coming June 4th for $199 (which we wrote about here), you can do just that. Before now, you needed an iPhone or another carrier (most GSM 3G implementations allow for this). Soon, you can do it right on your EVO 4G with Sprint. To quote their official press release:

You can call in your take-out order while you look at their menu on the Internet...[with] simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while the conversation continues.

Tonight in New York City, Sprint unveils a whopper, and it has nothing (or very little, anyway) to do with Disney's new film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

It has everything, however, to do with the newest Android bit of gold: the release date of the HTC EVO 4G, the first 4G phone on Sprint's 4G wireless network.

Until now, all we've seen is a teaser on the phone's home page indicating that it will be available summer 2010 and some unconfirmed rumors about June 6th release date and $199. But now we know for sure when this beauty will hit the streets and how much it will cost.

The HTC EVO 4G is coming in June, and we all can't wait for it to arrive here. That's why any time a bit of new information about the phone surfaces on the web, we sheeply run over to take a look, our tongues out.

This time, AndroidCentral's sister site PreCentral, or rather one of its users - bnceo got some nice scans of the 4 week advertising campaign RadioShack, now The Shack, is planning to run with for the month before EVO 4G is released. The flyer was given to bnceo quite openly by a sales person, so if you want to see it in full glory, you may have some luck walking into your local RadioShack and simply asking for one.
