SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 Edition Now Unlocking Root And NAND On Post-OTA EVO 4G Phones

This article mentions rooting and flashing of custom ROMs. If you’re unfamiliar with either term, hit up our primers here and here for additional information

Remember the 3-click SimpleRoot app that brought full root, including permanently unlocking NAND (that's something unrevoked doesn't do), to your EVO 4G? I sure do, as that's exactly how I rooted my EVO. However, If you applied the latest god forsaken EVO OTA, you may have found that that version of SimpleRoot no longer worked.

Fear not, jiqqaman, the app's developer, recently released an updated version, this time containing 4 steps. It works with the EVOs upgraded to 1.47.651.1 like a charm.

Sprint Launches 4G In Rochester, Syracuse, NY; Merced, Visalia, CA; Eugene, OR; Tri-Cities, Yakima, WA

Because it was previously leaked, today's announcement of 7 new metropolitan areas lighting up with Sprint's 4G signal didn't quite come as a surprise. Still, we want to congratulate Sprint users who will now be able to enjoy 4G speeds in these areas:

  • Rochester, NY
  • Syracuse, NY
  • Merced, CA
  • Visalia, CA
  • Eugene, OR
  • Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland), WA
  • Yakima, WA

With the 7 new additions, Sprint's 4G coverage now includes 43 markets.

HTC EVO 4G is currently the only 4G phone on Sprint's network, soon to be joined by Samsung's Galaxy S Epic 4G. The users of these powerhouses, who are charged an extra $10 "premium data" fee, will finally be able to see exactly where their money has been going.

CAP201007081101

For many people, the EVO is an excellent phone, but extremely weak battery life is a huge detractor. Now, however, always-helpful user Pingpongboss has posted some instructions over at XDA-Devs for how to use the SetCPU app to significantly increase battery life. How significantly? He estimates that he could get 64 hrs with the screen off on a full charge. Pretty impressive stuff. Before and After graphs:

The key is disabling Perflock – a bit of code by HTC that keeps the CPU running at a set speed, regardless of usage. By disabling this and setting custom profiles, the CPU can underclock when its use is lower.

Before the EVO launched, Matt Mastracci and the crew at unrevoked announced that the EVO and Hero had a serious security vulnerability. In turn, this made the phones easy to root – but they still recommended that people either hold off on buying the phone unless they were going to root, or an OTA update was released patching the flaws. It looks like the latest OTA did just that, as they’ve released details on their Wiki.

The crew at UR suspects that these vulnerabilities were for debugging, and were never removed before the phone went to manufacture. The first flaw is in a set of code called “Skyagent” (HTC/Sprints name), and is pants-pissingly scary.

Update schedules are rarely a final thing, and users can get quite angry when they don’t receive updates according to schedule. However, HTC may have finally given themselves a schedule that they can adhere to: all of their recently released phones will be updated to Android 2.2 “before Christmas.” They had previously announced that ‘several’ models would receive the update in Q3 2010, so it’s unclear if this announcement means that timetable has shifted.

While rumors say that the HTC Desire could receive the update in August, other HTC phones might not be updated for several months. HTC’s higher-end devices, such as the Droid Incredible and EVO, will likely be updated fairly quickly.

Well, isn’t this interesting – the latest OTA update for the EVO (which patched the vulnerability that previously enabled root) has been cracked. The interesting part? It uses Adobe’s Flash Config page to gain entry to the system config.

The full instructions aren’t all that tricky, and as we’ve said before, as long as you read the instructions first, you shouldn’t have an issue. If you haven’t rooted before, it’s certainly worth considering. The benefits are numerous, and having rooted a phone for the first time myself just a month ago, I can attest that it’s well worth it.

A few weeks ago, Amzer sent us some sample products to review for the EVO. They included two silicone cases (one red, one black), a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable, and 2 screen protectors (one mirror, one clear).

Amzer is owned by Moftware, parent company of numerous smaller, more specific companies. The company isn’t some dinky accessory maker – they estimate that they sold 250,000 accessories for the EVO alone in the first two weeks after the phones release. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

The cases they sent us were both the soft silicone skin cases they make (rather than the rubberized hard cases they also sell).

If You Don’t Know What To Do With Your Bricked EVO 4G, Take It To A Sprint Corporate Store

HTC and Sprint are working together to accommodate EVO 4G owners whose phones were bricked after this week’s initial update. Without adding very much detail, HTC stated that Sprint Corporate stores can be of service. You can find the closest store using this tool.

If You Don’t Know What To Do With Your Bricked EVO 4G, Take It To A Sprint Corporate Store

If you have already updated successfully and your phone boots up fine, you don't have to do anything. If you haven't applied the OTA update yet, you can now safely do so, as the bricking issue has been fixed.

If, however, the initial update made your phone go blank or get stuck in a boot loop, it's time to head over to your local Sprint store.

The regular price of the phone at Sprint.com is $199 after a mail-in rebate, compared to places like Best Buy that will replace the mail-in rebate with an instant one. However, you can get an extra $50 off if you buy it from Sprint.

Positives And Negatives

  • Positive: $50 off
  • Negative:
    • You have to deal with a $100 mail-in rebate instead of an instant $100 discount at Best Buy.

Earlier this morning we posted a hilarious video made by tinywatchproductions depicting an average iPhone user fanboy - the one who mindlessly gobbles up everything Steve and AT&T say and buys every iPhone just because it's an iPhone. Admit it - you know a few people like that.

Now in a comeback video, the same tinywatchproductions came up with a few things an iPhone user could counter with in a conversation with a mindless EVO 4G fan (do those exist?). This video is done in the same machine text-to-speech voiceover format as the first one, which makes it so funny.

Mac VS Windows next please?
