Earlier today, an employee posted on Sprint’s blog saying that the EVO will be getting Android 2.2 soon. When asked if the update would go out to Hero and Moment users as well, his reply was:

No, it will not. 2.2 will not be available for HTC Hero or Samsung Moment

Shortly after, Sprint sent out an official tweet confirming:

sprint_nofroyo

Buzzkill. The majority of the remainder of the posts are people who are pissed off that Sprint is more or less abandoning them.

android flash

One of the members at xda-developers has managed to compile an APK for Android 2.0 and 2.1, giving users full Flash support on their device!

Achieved by using a plugin on Android 2.x currently used to enable Flash Lite, the APK that’s been created will remove the Lite version of Flash, replacing it with the full version used on Android 2.2.

Android 2.2 has a new feature called com.google.android.feature.GOOGLE_PLUGIN. And Flash usesit to embed itself inside browser.

Ad firm Chitika has run the numbers, and found that the HTC EVO accounts for 1.93% of android handsets, just days after the phone’s release. That may not seem too impressive at first sight, but keep in mind that:

1) The phone sold out nearly everywhere, right away. Personally, I went to 3 stores and called 2 more to try to find one on launch day, without luck. I managed to order one from Sprint, but within 2 days of launch they were reporting being sold out online as well.

unrevoked

Well, this is fun. Minutes after I completed and published my post further detailing how to root your EVO, I catch a teaser for ‘unrevoked’ - a ‘painless’ EVO rooting method that’s to be released tomorrow. Unrevoked is the work of Matt Mastracci, who gave us our first sneak peak at a rooted EVO, and one of the developers who contributed to the hack.

unrevoked

As Matt details here, there are several critical security flaws present in the custom Sprint software included on the EVO, and these flaws were the driving force behind releasing an easy ‘anyone can do it’ rooting method for the EVO.

If you are a Sprint Hero owner and want the latest official 2.1 update baked into a custom ROM with root, then you currently have only one alternative - the Fresh ROM.

Custom ROMs For The Hero

There are pretty much only 2 main Sprint Hero custom ROMs - DamageControl (by damageless and TrevE) and Fresh (by flipz). Both are very good, have an excellent track record, and great communities behind them.

Since a lot of you have been wondering, I wanted to post a brief confirmation that the official version of the HTC Hero 2.1 update Sprint released today is exactly the same as the one we covered on May 14th, 5 days ago.

Both files share the following characteristics:

  • 124139523 bytes (118M)
  • Version 2.27.651.5

HTC's servers are so slammed right now that I am getting about 3KB/s downloading - you might as well download the leaked file instead - they're exactly the same.

HTC Hero CDMA Custom ROM Users - Update Your Radio Baseband For Best Performance, Reception, And Battery Life

HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint, Cellular South, etc) users using a Custom ROM, such as damageless' DamageControl or flipz's Fresh, listen up.

In order to take advantage of the latest improvements Sprint has made to the phone's ability to receive and utilize signal efficiently, updating to the latest ROM is not enough.

Radio Baseband

There is a special component outside of the ROM itself called the Radio Baseband, which ROM developers don't include (for whatever reason) into the custom ROM images, and instead sometimes provide as a separate update.
