As Sprint's newest dual-core WiMax device, there was the little doubt that Motorola Photon 4G would inevitably be compared to the HTC EVO 3D. The battle nearly started itself in the comments yesterday once our Photon 4G Review Roundup went live, as the EVO 3D loyalists came running to defend their beloved device. Fortunately, Bob Kovacs of Wirefly took it upon himself to find out which device is better by throwing them both in the ring together to face off in the Schmackdown.

Oh, which one wins, you ask? I dare not ruin the surprise for you! Check the video out and feel free to drop your feelings in the comments afterwards.

Ah, the moment that Desire owners have been waiting for... or is it? HTC released its official Gingerbread build for the Desire this morning, but it's not in the form of an OTA (over-the-air); instead, it's a full RUU (ROM upgrade utility). This means that not only is the installation process a bit more complex than an OTA, it will also wipe the device during the upgrade process, forcing you to start from scratch upon first boot.

Now, that may not sound too bad to some of you, but there's more: the update is limited regionally, as well. It's not available to users in Germany, North America, South America, South Korea, or Japan.

We've been waiting all day for a new project called Revolutionary from AlphaRev and Unrevoked to go live, and that moment is now upon is. This new tool allows S-Off and NAND write access to a whole slew of modern HTC phones, including some devices that have yet to receive a permanent unlock solution:

The most notable of the bunch is the EVO 3D and the Sensation -- two devices that were previously without a permanent root solution (only perma-temp).

Since the beginning of time, there has been but one rule among men: release GPL source code on time. For those who choose to ignore this rule, terrible things ensue; most of which are so horrific, I dare not speak the details. The code has always been upheld by the law, but one foul beast has found a way to circumvent the system and hold the source for weeks, even months, too long: HTC.

I've always wanted to give some sort of dramatic introduction like that. Joking aside, though, HTC released a whole gaggle of source code to its developer repository this morning, encompassing devices both new and old:

  • Salsa
  • EVO 4G Gingerbread
  • Droid Incredible 2 Gingerbread
  • Sensation
  • EVO 3D
  • ChaCha
  • Desire Z

And we all know what that means: full custom kernels are on their way!

Less than a week ago, T-Mobile announced that Gingerbread would be rolling out to a limited number of myTouch 4G users on June 20th, with a broader rollout hitting all customer by the end of the year. In a strange twist, the Magenta Carrier updated the myTouch 4G support page this morning stating that:

Beginning August 5, you will be able to go to  a T-Mobile retail store to update your T-Mobile myTouch 4G to the most recent software version. This helps if you have not gotten the Over-The-Air (OTA)  update.

The document goes on to provide users some caveats to be aware of in case the update fails; such as data loss, application loss, the amount of time that the update will take in such a case, and a detailed process of what the tech will do to your device.

Developments in the Apple v HTC patent war are coming in fast and it looks like things are heating up.

In a preliminary ruling (discussed further in our earlier article) the US International Trade Commission (ITC) found HTC liable for infringing Apple’s patents. Google’s executive chairman then hit back with his view on Apple’s strategy of litigating its competition into oblivion.

But, now Bloomberg is reporting that an unsealed (not made public) ruling dating back to July 1 may have turned the tide in favour of HTC. According to the earlier ITC ruling Apple’s Mac OS X is utilising technology that infringes two GPU patents owned by S3 Graphics.

Not content to wait for manufacturers to get in to shape and update our phones to the latest and greatest versions of Android, most of us here at Android Police have had a brush with a number of custom ROMs in the past.

Whether it's the latest version of Cyanogen or a more obscure mod, there is always a ROM floating around on my phone, and until now I've always had to uninstall one before installing the other. Fortunately, that's about to change thanks to a new application on the Market called BootManager.

This article deals with a couple of advanced topics.

About a week ago, a seemingly official build of Gingerbread for the T-Mobile G2 found its way to T-Mo's support forums, suggesting an update was fast approaching. That suggestion was dead-on, as the official over-the-air update process started today, according to the Pinkest Carrier's G2 update page.

The update brings many welcome fixes and enhancements:

  • New features:
    • Android  2.3.3 (Gingerbread)
    • Tell HTC
    • Google  Books added
    • Notification bar color scheme is changed to black
    • New  battery indicator, phone, and web icons
    • Color-coded network icon and signal indicator added. Green when connected to Google  servers. Grey when not connected.
    • Pressing the power key while on a call disables the proximity sensor
  • Fixed or improved  issues:
    • Wi-Fi calling improvements
    • New SMS and email notification improvements
    • Improvements to sending MMS from the Gallery

You'll automatically be prompted to install the update when it's available on your device, but for those who just can't bear to wait, head into the menu, tap Settings >  About Phone > System Updates to check for it manually.

We finally have a bit more info about the mysterious HTC Vigor - a device that we previously only knew about thanks to a leaked image taken by its 6MP camera. Now, though, this device is coming into the light a bit more, thanks to A NenaMark benchmark ran by an "anonymous" submitter. We now have a better idea of what this handset may be packing under the hood, and it sounds quite pleasing:

  • 1280x720 display (!)
  • Qualcomm Adreno GPU
  • 1.5GHz processor (it's not clear whether it's dual-core or not, but we're hoping that it is)
  • Android 2.3.4
  • It appears to be running on Verizon's network

While this handset may sound pretty great, make a mental note that these types of benchmarks are fairly easy to spoof, so take it all with a grain of salt until we get more proof it its reality.

Following our report in May of the upcoming HTC tablet named after the celebrated Italian composer Puccini, BGR has gotten its hands on some exclusive images of the device itself.

The first of the two high-res press shots grabbed by BGR features the front of the 10" tablet in what appears to be a bespoke case with a stylus and holder. The second image shows off the rear of the tablet which appears to be sporting an 8 MP camera, dual-LED flash, and stereo speakers and a mic.

Interestingly, the first image also suggests that the $80 Magic Pen will be compatible with the Puccini.
