Dr. Dre's 'Beats' Are Here To Stay, Putting Boom-Chick-A-Boom In Your Phone

Love 'em or hate 'em, Beats are a hit. Annual sales of the pricey headgear are reported to approach half a billion dollars a year. During a recession, no less! My favorite Android handset maker, HTC, has even entered into a partnership with the company that promises to play your music "the way it was meant to be heard." I can't personally speak to the quality of the sound, but I'm sure any enhancement would be lost on me; audiophiles would turn their nose up at the paltry 192kbps quality I rip my CD collection to.

[LOL] HTC Facing Possible Lawsuit From Vivid Entertainment For Trademark Infringement

Maybe you've heard of a new AT&T LTE handset from HTC called the Vivid. Maybe you haven't. Either way, HTC has gotten itself in a bit of hot water using such a risqué name on the blazing fast beast. By whom, you ask? Why, adult entertainment company Vivid Entertainment, of course.

Vivid is threatening HTC with a possible trademark infringement suit if the name of the device isn't changed. When asked about the suit, HTC had this to say:

We are reviewing the complaint and don't expect to have any further comment until it is resolved.

Yeah... typical public relations crap.

So, looky at what we have here: yet another render for a supposedly upcoming HTC device. This one is a far cry from the current crop of HTC phones on the market -- heck, it's even a whole different beast from the Edge and Ville. This one looks mean.

Not only does this monster look like it will beat up all the other phones and take their lunch money, but it's rumored to have the power to back it up. Under that sharp unibody hood, the Zeta is said to be packing a face-melting 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon, 4.5-inch 720p display, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and 8MP rear shooter capable of 1080p video capture, 1.3 front camera, and 1,830mAh battery.

Update 2: We're hearing that a lot of people are still without the update, so we pinged HTC to make sure everything is rolling as planned. Everything is right on schedule, so just sit tight -- it should be hitting your device anytime now.

Update 3: After months of silence, it seems the beast has awoken, and the update is rolling out yet again, with the same version number 4.06.605.3. There is also word of a smaller 8.6MB update 4.08.605.2, which will probably piggyback on top of 4.06.605.3.

HTC Ville Outed: 4.3-Inch Display, Ultra-Thin, Ice Cream Sandwich, And Sense 4.0

Hot on the heels of the HTC Edge, rumors of yet another HTC offering have surfaced. This one is codenamed Ville, and the word on the street is the HTC will announce this bad-boy alongside the Edge at Mobile World Congress. According to BGR, the Ville is packing some reasonable specs on the hardware side:

  • 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor
  • 8MP rear shooter (the same one that's reportedly in the Edge)
  • Metal construction
  • Less than 8mm thick

As you may have guessed from the above image, the Ville will come loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich, and Sense 4.0 is said to be coming along for the ride as well.

New Details About The HTC Edge Surface, This Is What Dreams Are Made Of

Yesterday we saw the first render of the HTC Edge, which is rumored to be the first smartphone to pack the ultra-sick quad-core Tegra 3 processor. New info has now emerged that suggests this superphone could be packed with even more monstrous specs that we originally imagined.

According to BGR, the fun is just getting started with the Tegra 3, as this super-slim device could feature a 4.7-inch 720p SuperLCD 2 with optical lamination, which would make this the best display we've ever seen on a smartphone.

Chart: Android Phone Size Over Time - We're Going To Need Bigger Hands

Android has a mysterious case of gigantism, and I'm not entirely certain why manufacturers keep feeling the need to have a bigger phone than the next guy. The size war (all male anatomical euphemisms aside) is on, and we're not sure when it's going to end. Take a look at these device charts for the three major Android manufacturers in (pretty much) chronological order of release:

Leaked Press Shot Of The HTC Edge Shows Up, Rumored To Be The First Quad-Core Phone

While we already know the world's first quad-core tablet will be the ASUS Transformer Prime, we just got a glimpse of the first quad-core phone. It's rumored to be called the HTC Edge, and the hardware sounds completely beast.

  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP f/2.2 lens
  • 10mm thick

There is one small detail that you may have already noticed: capacitive buttons. Of course, that doesn't mean this phone won't come with ICS right out of the gate, it just means that it won't take advantage of on-screen buttons.

According to PocketNow, we could see this device hit stores in late Q1 or early Q2 of next year, though carrier info is nowhere to be found.
