Hello and welcome! Allow me to introduce you to Sprint's next big boy phone: (deep breath) the HTC Evo 4G LTE.

This is Sprint's version of the HTC One X. HTC's much publicized "One" branding strategy survived a grand total of two carriers in the US - Sprint kicked it to the curb in favor of the aforementioned alphabet-soup-style naming convention. Keep in mind the original Evo was actually called the "HTC Evo 4G," so you're going to need to be detail oriented when talking about the Evo line. But hey, considering this is the same marketing department that birthed the novella known as the "Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch," we actually got off pretty light.

Doesn't matter if you're a new Sprintster or an existing customer - this deal is good for everyone across the board.

Three short days ago, AT&T's phone selection got a little bit better. Of course, I'm talking about the arrival of the HTC One X. If you already have this flagship in hand, then you'll be happy to know that a one-click root method is already available.

Disclaimer: Android Police isn't responsible for any harm to your device - proceed at your own risk.

This will automatically root, install Busybox, and SuperSU onto your One X, all while you sit back and sip some coffee. Here's how to make it happen:

This will not unlock the bootloader!
  • Download the HTC drivers for Windows
  • Download root.zip and extract it
  • Plug your phone into the computer (make sure USB debugging is enabled in Settings  > Developer options > USB debugging)
  • Double click the appropriate root file (root.bat for Windows, root-linux.sh for Linux, or root-mac.sh for Mac)
  • ???

The HTC EVO 4G LTE is probably the most anticipated phone to ever makes its way to the Now Network (except maybe that other phone), and it in just ten days, you'll be able to claim one as your own. That's right, Sprint finally announced the release date for the newest edition to the EVO line, and it will be hitting shelves on May 18th for $199 with a two-year agreement.

For anyone who hasn't already heard, the EVO LTE is the latest successor to Sprint's popular EVO line, and will be the third device to run on its upcoming LTE network.

Looks like Sprint's underling companies have been busy working on bringing the first taste of 4G to the pay-as-you-go market. Piggybacking off of Sprint's 4G WiMax network, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile will both begin offering one 4G-capable smartphone each on May 31st: the HTC EVO V 4G on Virgin and the EVO Design 4G will be representing all that WiMax has to offer on Boost.

HTC EVO V 4G

The EVO V appears to be some sort of rehash of the EVO 3D:

  • 4.3-inch qHD display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 5MP rear shooter with 3D imaging, 1.3MP front camera
  • 4GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • 1730mAh battery
  • Android 4.0 with Sense 3.6

There's no word on processor or clock speed, but I'll be surprised if it's not the same 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon that's in the original EVO 3D.

While Big Red may not be getting an HTC One series device just yet, the finally official Incredible 4G is actually very close. Announced yesterday just in time for CTIA, the Incredible 4G, along with most of its specs, was leaked by Android Police back in early April and briefly showed up two weeks later at DroidDoes.com. Yesterday, Verizon threw together a nice unofficial shindig for the press where we could finally check out the Incredible 4G in person. Read on for my impressions.

The Incredible 4G is basically One S' little brother - it's smaller (4" vs 4.3"), slightly clocked down (1.2GHz vs 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 'Krait'), has smaller internal storage capacity (8GB vs 16GB), an S-LCD instead of a Super AMOLED screen, and contains only a subset of ImageSense called Video Pic (it lets you snap photos while taking a video, which we show off below).

Want to hear more about the EVO 4G LTE? Good! Because we have a release date for you! And if you don't like that one, we have another one. According to Wirefly's pre-order FAQ page, this slick beast will be unleashed on May 18th. Sprint's own pre-order confirmations seem to lend some credence to this idea, stating that pre-order will begin to ship as early as May 15th.

Sprint's promotional email also supports this, stating that the pre-order offer ends May 17th, which would make sense if the next day is launch day.

However, not everyone is convinced that May 18th is the big day.

By now, the One X and Galaxy S III fanboys have set up shop and are ready to wage war. If you're in the One X camp, but you prefer Sprint to AT&T, the EVO 4G LTE is what you're after. Pre-orders have gone live today. Wirefly, however, has a special deal going on today: $50 off the normal $200 price tag.

If you're looking to jump ship to Sprint, or if you're an existing customer at the end of your contract, you qualify for the discount. Not a bad deal for one of the headlining phones of the year.

Historically, Best Buy hasn't been the most, shall we say, reliable company when it comes to... well, anything. The most recent display of typographical error on Best Buy's part comes from the pre-order page for the upcoming HTC EVO LTE. Looks like Best Buy thinks it's the phone of the year - it has the off-contract price listed as $100k. Ha!

bb

While the $100k price tag may indeed be a humorous error, there is a silver lining: if you actually pre-order the phone from BB, you get a $50 gift card upon activation.

Specs:

  • 4.7-inch 1280x720 display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP f/2.0 rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
  • NFC with Google Wallet support
  • Kickstand
  • Android 4.0 with Sense 4

If $50 is enough for you to overlook this retail-pricing snafu, then head right here to pre-order your and secure a gift card in the process.
