Last night, @IncredibleDoes threw a shout out on Twitter to let the world know that HTCSense.com was now live.
While the selection of users and phones that can utilize the service right now is very (more like extremely) limited, it is still exciting to see this coming to fruition. There are devices both upcoming and already out that are slated to receive the new Sense, and it is nothing short of mind-blowing how much functionality they've added. Read More
If you are unfamiliar with rooting or ROMs, you can check out our primers here, because we're going to talk about it:
User lalexi over at xda-developers just posted a link to HTC's official release of the Desire's kernel source code. This is very good news for the development community because, as it stands, developers have to simply patch bugs that occur when trying to overclock the processor and getting things to work, sometimes incompletely, trial-and-error style. We've known it was coming for some time now, but T-Mobile just sent out a press release including details regarding their plans for a WiFi Calling application for their Android phones. The new T-Mobile myTouch will launch later this year with the feature, and the Motorola Defy will be receiving it as well. Additionally, the T-Mobile G2 should be getting it in the coming months, along with the LG Optimus and possibly the Motorola Charm. Read More
Wirefly, notorious for launching the best mobile deals on the web, did not disappoint us today, which, if you remember, is the official T-Mobile G2 launch date.
While the competition sells the G2 at $199.99 and even $149.99, Wirefly's $99.99 deal for new accounts completely knocks it out of the park.
Add free shipping and the absence of tax, and you get some serious savings left in your pocket. Read More
Well, we didn't see this one coming. Hackers over at XDA-Developers have discovered that there is a hardware chip limiting the hackability of the G2, undermining the owner's ability to customize the Android OS. The chip acts as a rootkit and over-writes modifications to the /system partition after rebooting.
This is a very unsettling development. Heck, I thought we had a nice dynamic working in the Android manufacturer sphere: Motorola tried to lock down everything and HTC just made sweet devices. Read More
If you live in European markets, you may be glad to hear that HTC is offering a new color for two of their phones: the HTC Desire, which will soon come in "Brilliant White", and the HTC Legend, which will soon be available in "Phantom Black."
There's no doubt that each phone looks really slick, but you've got to wonder the purpose of a black Legend: wasn't its main appeal the gorgeous metal finish? Read More
Just in time for the discontinuation of the original myTouch, the rumored myTouch HD has been made official, albeit with a slight name change (HD has been dropped). And the device is rocking some pretty impressive specs, which may just be enough to draw people away from the G2:
- Next generation 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
- 5 megapixel camera with 720p capture
- Front facing camera for video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G
- 3.8" WVGA screen
- Genius Button
- Android 2.2 (possibly with Espresso UI)
- HSPA+ capabilities
Unfortunately, despite the awesome specs we have available, there's no word on pricing, and the only information we have on a release date is "in time for the holidays." But, right now, the only question on my mind is: when can I pre-order this beast? Read More
This article deals with a couple of advanced topics. If you’re unfamiliar with some of the terms, hit up our primers here:
In case you were afraid that your sexy new T-Mobile G2 wouldn't be able to run custom ROMs or take screenshots when it arrived, fear not - hendusoone, xda-developers forum member is here to save the day. Read More
Nothing's perfect, and it looks like the T-Mobile G2 is no exception - according to the latest batch of complaints coming from users who received their devices ahead of the scheduled release date, units are shipping with only 2GB of internal storage, whereas HTC's G2 website lists it at 4GB. Since this just so happens to be the same amount of internal storage offered by the G2's international cousin, the Desire Z, Engadget speculates that a mix-up may have occurred somewhere along the line, a theory which, I am sure, is not far off. Having one device leaked is so last fiscal year, man. Verizon is hip to the new trend of leaking out details of all of your devices and giving people a heads-up to not buy phones that are out right now since they're just gonna get replaced anyway.
Androids aren't the only things on show, but forgive us for omitting those not relevant to the droid-heads (check BerryPolice.com, great site).
Motorola's got the lion's share of the devices. Read More
