T-Mobile G1 Rides Off Into The Sunset

The world’s first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1 (based on the HTC Dream platform), has officially been discontinued today. It is no longer available via T-Mobile’s website.

More than anything, this marks the beginning of the end for the first-generation flagship Android devices, as phones running Android 1.5 and 1.6 are slowly phased out of the Android ecosystem—reducing version fragmentation, and allowing developers and users alike to move away from obsolete software.

HTC-Branded Android Devices Wildfire, Desire, and The New Tianyi Headed To China On China Mobile, No Mention Of Google Or Android

HTC issued a press release today announcing four HTC-branded phones (HTC phones were previously branded Dopod in China) are to be released in China in a deal with China Mobile and electronics retailer GOME Electrical Appliances (the largest electronics reseller in China). Three of those phones run Android. One, the Tianxi, looks to be a rebranded HD2 running Windows Mobile, which as we all know, can run Android.

Unfortunately, it appears removal of Google branding from Android devices (including the Market) in China will continue with these new phones.

HTC Confirms It Will No Longer Use AMOLED Displays For Desire, Nexus One—Switching to Sony SLCD's

HTC confirmed in a press release today that the Nexus One (which is still manufactured for and sold across Europe and Korea) and Desire will no longer be sporting AMOLED displays. Instead, HTC has opted to use Sony SLCDs. Their reasoning? The press release gives it to us from a nice, sugar-coated PR perspective:

HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One
Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer.

HTC Vision Spotted Again – T-Mobile Branding, HSPA+, Could Be Called The G1 Blaze

Details are scarce on this one, but a new shot of the HTC Vision has been leaked. With the shot came a few new details: it’s likely headed for T-Mobile (either in the US, overseas, or both), and will be named the G1 Blaze.

g1blaze

As we’ve stated before, the device packs what has quickly become standard fare for high-end phones:

  • 1 GHz CPU
  • 3.7” Screen
  • Eclair (Android 2.1) + Sense
  • HSPA+ (rumored)
  • Launching in September
  • Slide-out four row QWERTY keyboard

If it’s true that this phone is going to be packing HSPA+, it could be a big winner – so far, T-Mobile has no phones that support it, and it’s pretty speedy.

[Hands On] Cyanogen Mod 6 Nightly For HTC EVO 4G (07232010 release): It Rocks My World

On Tuesday, we posted that the first nightly (experimental) Cyanogen Mod 6 (CM6) build for the EVO 4G was released the night before. True to the name, CM6 has released a new build every night since, bringing bug and feature fixes. After a number of you posted comments saying that you were running CM6 without any problems (other than the known non-functional features), I decided to take the plunge.

The ROM still lacks a handful of features – such as 4G, FM Radio, and full MMS support.

Updated: HTC EVO 4G, Hero, Incredible Owners, Here's A Battery Tip For You: 2 Extra 1500mAh Batteries + Battery Charger For $10, AndroidPolice Tested And Approved

EVO 4G is notorious for its battery problems - they've been plaguing the phone since before it even came out. I personally don't think the battery life is too drastically different from the Hero, for instance, but it's still pretty bad. Chances are that if you want to last through the day, you won't.

Update #1: These fit the HTC Hero too! (Thanks to @xMPoly for the tip)
Update #2: Fit the Droid Incredible perfectly as well!
