Nexus One car dock

The Nexus One became available for sale on January 5th. The Nexus One Desktop Dock accessory was on sale a little over 3 weeks later, on January 27th. Finally on April 6th, almost exactly 4 months after the release of the phone, Google has announced that the car dock is available for purchase.

We were teased with glimpses of the car dock in Google’s Nexus One video series ‘The Story’, specifically in the 5th video titled ‘Day One’ (embedded below).

sprint

The EVO 4G news is continuing to roll in, though I’m using the term ‘news’ loosely. Engadget is reporting today that Sprint’s upper management is talking about a potential June 6th or 13th launch date, with the 13th seeming more likely to get some hot 4G action.

Engadget is definitely one of the more trustworthy gadget blogs out there right now, but they can only peg this information on ‘intel’, so at this point it does not appear that anything is set in stone.

Last Updated: April 12th, 2010

We just saw a leaked photo coming from Radio Shack’s Direct2U system showing what appears to be the rumored MyTouch Slide. If you are unfamiliar with what the MyTouch Slide is, rumor has it that it will be the G1’s successor for T-Mobile.

This is the photo, posted back in January, of what has been rumored to be the MyTouch Slide. I already have my reservations in regards to anything I own being named ‘MyTouch’, and I think the addition of ‘Slide’ to the name does not help much.

HTC EVO 4G

A rumor is floating around, started by an alleged BestBuy employee, about BestBuy starting EVO 4G preorders within a couple of weeks, possibly starting on April 16th.

The rumor comes from gstill4, an AndroidCentral forum member, who posted this last night at 11PM:

I work at best buy and I got info today that best buy mobile is about to get ready to take pre-orders within a couple weeks and it could possibly start on april 16th

We were already expecting BestBuy to start preorders for the EVO 4G sometime soon, and this only reassures our expectations, whether gstill4 is credible or not.

HTC financial report

HTC, an increasingly popular smartphone maker and the single biggest player in the Android business, just announced its financial results for the first quarter of this year, and they simply couldn't be any better.

Q1 2010 Financial Results

Revenues rose 19.3% year-over-year to NT$37.7 billion (US$1.2 billion) from NT$31.59, blowing way past the analysts' forecasts of NT$32-34 billion and even HTC's own expectations.

Net profits rose 3% year-over-year to NT$5.03 billion (US$158 million) from NT$4.88 billion.

Motorola Droid and Nexus One

As one of Google IO 2010 conference attendees, I've been wondering what Google had up its sleeve for this year's big gift. The price of the conference last year was sweetened with a free Android phone given to everyone attending, and I was hoping this year wouldn't be an exception, secretly hoping for a Nexus One or even better - a pre-release version of a brand new phone.

My wishes came true a few minutes ago when I received an email from Google informing me that all registered conference attendees would be getting a free phone sent to them before the conference even begins.

HTC Evo 4G video
Last Updated: May 12th, 2010

HTC likes professionally shot videos - they've released at least one for each new phone announced in the recent history.

We have no problem with that - we can appreciate a good quality HD video showing this desirable beast up close.

What we do have a problem with is how boring this video is. Evo is flying around the screen to some lounge music in the most mind-numbing way possible; there is no voice-over - just a rundown of the main features.

Sprint Application Developers Program

Last week, after the announcement of HTC EVO 4G at the CTIA conference, Sprint quickly dropped a bunch of developer documentation onto their Android dev site. Having dugg in a little deeper, we saw confirmation from the horse's mouth itself (Sprint) that the EVO 4G will be running on Froyo - the version of Android following Eclair (2.1).

Here is the relevant part of the developer document v0.10 (also unchanged in v0.11):

According to the above, TYPE_WIMAX - a constant used for dealing with WiMax connectivity features - should be added in the Froyo SDK.

Android statistics

AdMob, one of the world's largest mobile advertisement networks, posted a report (PDF) yesterday citing various mobile related statistics for the period of February 2009 to February 2010.

We've looked through all the boring stuff and pulled out the interesting highlights (you all like highlights, don't you?).

The Highlights

Here are the highlights that we've cherry picked out of it for you (the data is year-over-year where applicable):

  • AdMob currently serves over 15,000 mobile websites and applications and has received 14.1 billion (!) requests worldwide in the last year
  • The number of smartphones went up 13% from 35% to 48%
  • Smartphone traffic overall went up 193% (data transferred, number of requests)
  • Non-smartphone phones share went down 23% from 58% to 35% (yup, soon everyone is going to have an PreiDroidberry of sorts)
  • Android was the fastest growing operating system, up 22% from 2% to 24% (!!!)
  • The top 5 Android devices by traffic were:
    • Motorola Droid
    • HTC Dream (G1)
    • HTC Hero
    • HTC Magic (MyTouch 3G)
    • Motorola CLIQ
  • Among the number of requests from smartphones, all non-Android devices posted a decline while all Android ones were up (except for the G1, which was the first generation Android and doesn't really count).
