Eris-update2-600x448

As usual, Droid Life has come through with some Mr. Blurrycam photos. This time, they’re from Verizon and show that the Droid Eris will be receiving a software update on July 17th at midnight (ok – techincally, it’s July 16th at 11:59 PM – but for all intents and purposes, that’s the 17th). The update isn’t Android 2.2, but that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the phone has been discontinued.

For many people, the EVO is an excellent phone, but extremely weak battery life is a huge detractor. Now, however, always-helpful user Pingpongboss has posted some instructions over at XDA-Devs for how to use the SetCPU app to significantly increase battery life. How significantly? He estimates that he could get 64 hrs with the screen off on a full charge. Pretty impressive stuff. Before and After graphs:

The key is disabling Perflock – a bit of code by HTC that keeps the CPU running at a set speed, regardless of usage.

While its author openly claims the ROM is far from perfect, most Incredible owners would probably be happy to give this new ROM, codenamed Sky Raider, a whirl simply to see what Froyo+Sense feel like on their rare, practically extinct, phones.

While have not yet tested Sky Raider ourselves, the installation should be familiar to most rooted Incredible owners who have flashed a ROM before.

Note: this ROM appears to require a full wipe (system/user data or “factory” reset).

PSA: HTC Droid Incredible Now In Stock At Amazon.com

If you've been trying to get your hands on the HTC Droid Incredible ever since it launched and you didn't reserve one in a preorder, you may have had some trouble finding one in stock. In fact, even some later preorders have not been filled yet.

The phone is still sold out everywhere, including VZW, with ship dates going as far as August:

The situation with the Droid Incredible, caused by shortages of AMOLED screens, got so bad that Verizon actually allowed customers to switch their preorders to Droid X instead.

Before the EVO launched, Matt Mastracci and the crew at unrevoked announced that the EVO and Hero had a serious security vulnerability. In turn, this made the phones easy to root – but they still recommended that people either hold off on buying the phone unless they were going to root, or an OTA update was released patching the flaws. It looks like the latest OTA did just that, as they’ve released details on their Wiki.

HTC shift

HTC may be pushing the limits on the size of smartphones with the EVO4G, but don’t expect that trend to translate tablets any time soon. While the iPad is undoubtedly the dominant tablet on the market right now, a number of Android-powered tablets are under development, and some are bound to hit the market sooner or later. Unfortunately, HTC is not one of the companies working on such a device, instead preferring to play wait-and-see with the competition:

"We are always looking at it, but, right now, the whole idea is that in order to be successful with a tablet, you need to have something compelling.

A few days ago, we found a couple of blurrycam pictures of the HTC Vision. Yesterday, a blurrycam shot of T-Mobile’s roadmap leaked, and it shows an HTC Vanguard releasing on September 9. Now, Engadget has word that the HTC Vision is launching in September – the same time the HTC Vanguard is shown launching on T-Mob’s roadmap. The Vision will be T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ phone. (As I’ve mentioned before, HSPA+ is pretty awesomely fast, and expanding like the wind.) The specs are rumored to include a 3.7” screen, slide-out 4 row QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.1 with sense, and a 1 Ghz processor.

roadmap

T-Mobile may not have the most impressive Android line-up compared to the other major carriers, but there’s no doubt they’ve invested a lot into the platform – after all, they were the first to bring us Android with the G1. Their investment in Android shows no signs of slowing down, as a leaked T-Mobile roadmap shows us that the carrier is planning on launching a total of seven more Android devices this year.
