First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!

Looking for a tasty little news snack before the big keynote at Google I/O tomorrow? Well, you’re in luck, because it appears that Walt Mossberg over at All Things D dropped his EVO 4G review tonight.

First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!

The review’s fairly short…it’s almost more of a preview than a proper rundown, but I’m sure the usual suspects (Engadget, Gizmodo, MobileCrunch), will cover the device in greater detail in their reviews. Until those start popping up though, what can we glean from Mossberg’s?

  • It’s fast. Walt says the phone’s 4G capability ‘offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network.’
  • 4G use significantly reduces the battery life.

Today, HTC announced on Twitter that an Android 2.1 upgrade is available for the HTC Hero for Sprint users.

The upgrade can be downloaded from the following URL, and is a 118MB Windows .exe executable:

The software upgrade posted below provides several key enhancements for your HTC Hero:

  • Upgraded OS to Android 2.1 Eclair

  • Includes a veriety of minor bug fixes.

HTC Wildfire Release Date Announced For T-Mobile UK

The very recently unveiled HTC Wildfire now has a release date for those of you over in the UK who want to get your hands on this entry level Android phone. T-Mobile UK just announced, via Twitter, that they will offer the HTC Wildfire starting June 14th, 2010.

Even though this particular phone is considered an entry level device, it does comes sporting Android 2.1 with an updated Sense UI, which should make a lot of people happy.

Specs

If you have not already read up on the specs for this entry level phone, here is a quick rundown of the most important ones:

  • CPU – Qualcomm 528MHz
  • 512MB Flash ROM
  • 384MB RAM
  • 3.2-inch QVGA Touch screen
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash
  • Android 2.1 with Sense UI
  • 4 available colors

The above specs further illustrate how entry level this phone is - while not the worst specs we've seen on an Android phone, they are certainly far from mind blowing.

Oh how much I love HTC's website. It is clean, simple, and very well laid out - other mobile companies should learn from them. HTC is not a small company by far but manage to present all the information we need in a way that no other manufacturer site I've seen (<3 HTC).

Remember the HTC Wildfire revelation to the public yesterday? To keep the momentum going, this morning HTC launched their official HTC Wildfire site, full of specs, photos, and highlights. If you are interested in this phone at all, or if you want to see how different it is from your current device (which it is), you should definitely check it out.

HTC Officially Introduces A New, More Social, Phone: Meet HTC Wildfire

After the good gentlemen over at Smartphone Arena broke embargo this morning, HTC went ahead and made things official with their latest Android handset, the HTC Wildfire.

Looking like the bastard child of an HTC Legend and Google Nexus One, it seems the Wildfire is intended to further flesh out HTC’s lineup of Android handsets. The handset is set to hit Europe and Asia in Q3 2010, which is a shame, because this is definitely the kind of handset that T-Mobile US could use. At this point, their current line up is beginning to show its age and their latest announcements, like the MyTouch Slide and Garminfone, aren’t exactly drool-worthy.

HTC Hero CDMA Custom ROM Users - Update Your Radio Baseband For Best Performance, Reception, And Battery Life

HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint, Cellular South, etc) users using a Custom ROM, such as damageless' DamageControl or flipz's Fresh, listen up.

In order to take advantage of the latest improvements Sprint has made to the phone's ability to receive and utilize signal efficiently, updating to the latest ROM is not enough.

Radio Baseband

There is a special component outside of the ROM itself called the Radio Baseband, which ROM developers don't include (for whatever reason) into the custom ROM images, and instead sometimes provide as a separate update.

For instance, my Hero is using DamageControl 2.08.1, and its Radio Baseband version is 1.04.01.09.21 (the 9/21 seems to be the release date).

Wow, did this day finally come? After months and months of waiting, and after seeing Samsung Moment get its update today, we have gotten word from AndroidCentral that there is a leak of the official Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero available to download.

Judging from initial reports, this is the real deal.

Ok guys just got off the phone with Sprint. THis is the official release they have just not put it up on Sprint yet. Sprint got the release just at about the same time as the leak. The Advance Tech support actually sent me to this site for the release since it is not at Sprint yet.

Google is about as innovative as it gets. With the advent of the Android operating system, we knew a phone would follow...an official Google phone. It came, and it was called the Nexus One.

While it was certainly a hit, and the Android OS has taken off to new heights, the online storefront that Google created for the Nexus One was neither hit nor height.

Given that people like to use devices before they buy them, the online store was bound to fail compared to a retail launch. People want to touch the touchscreen and see the apps in motion. In other words, the online store can only go so far.

If you've been thinking of getting the newest addition to the Sprint family on June 4th, the HTC EVO 4G, you're probably aware of the new $10 charge that Sprint will be requiring of you.

However, the situation isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. In fact, you may be getting much more than you thought you were paying for.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G 2-Way Video Calling (and Qik!)

By now, we have all heard the news: Sprint announced yesterday the HTC EVO 4G will be available June 4th. Among a number of touted features, its two-way video chat capabilities are unrivaled.

With two cameras, one on either side of the phone, this device opens up new possibilities. You can take snapshots or video while watching the results in realtime, or you can turn the camera on yourself...without turning the phone around.

The primary camera boasts a whopping 8 megapixels, while the front-facing camera has a slim 1.3 megapixels. That being said, it is still an incredible feature, allowing you to video chat straight from your phone.
