Whenever a new version of Android is announced, everyone is curious whether or not their device will end up getting the update. While it's usually assumed that the latest flagship devices will receive this sort of update, HTC has issued a statement removing all doubt:

We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.

Sure, it's not the big daddy HTC One X that those smug jerks over on AT&T are enjoying, nor is it the Galaxy S III that seems to be stealing all the headlines. But 25 greenbacks for HTC's flagship mid-range device - which still beats out pretty much every phone released from a year or more back, and many since - is hard to pass up. That's the price you'll pay for a new HTC One S on T-Mobile's web store, after an eye-popping limited time discount of $175.

Combine that with a $350 subsidy for signing a new or recurring two-year contract and a $50 mail-in-rebate (remember those?) and the grand total for the quite respectable 4.3-inch ICS phone is just $24.99.

It may have taken over a month longer than the international version, but HTC has finally released the kernel source code for T-Mobile's version of the One S. HTC has offered no explanation for why the US model's source code was delayed for so long, but perhaps this means that the AT&T One X will see its kernel source released at some point.

They also released the kernel source for the EVO 4G LTE. Developers - or anyone who is interested - can grab the source code from the link below.

Have you been annoyed by the "SmartSync" battery-saving feature found on HTC's newest phones? If you're not familiar with this aspect of Sense 4.0, that might make, well, sense. HTC has been fairly quiet about how exactly its battery optimizations in Sense work, but SmartSync is a big part of it, especially when it comes to saving juice overnight.

All Sense 4 phones (HTC One X, XL, S, V and EVO 4G LTE) utilize this feature to reduce battery consumption in the wee-hours, specifically from 12AM to 7AM. After 15 minutes of inactivity (no emails, screen off, etc.) in this time frame, Sense 4 phones go into "SmartSync" mode - deactivating all data connections and turning off sync.

HTC has given developers another treat today, in the form of kernel source code for the HTC One S. HTC's Dev Center has the downloads available, categorized by carrier and region. Unfortunately, the US variant on T-Mobile is conspicuously absent from the list. Previously, when HTC released the kernel source for the One X, the AT&T version was similarly missing and remains so to this day.

HTC hasn't explained why the US models are being left off the list, though it isn't difficult to imagine that the US carriers are simply more fussy than operators elsewhere in the world. In any case, if you use an HTC One S outside the states, and have need of the source code for your device's kernel, it's buffet time.

If you want the best phone that T-Mobile has to offer, then you undoubtedly want the HTC One S (our review). And if you want the HTC One S, then you probably want to get it while spending as little money as possible. Good news! If you pick the beasty up from Wirefly over the weekend and use the coupon code HTCONES25, then you'll get it for $125, which is a damn good price for this device (yes, I made a rhyme; no, I didn't do it on purpose). Amazon Wireless is selling the same device for a laughable $549 on-contract.

An Android phone is like a Leatherman Tool. It does a lot of things - without a doubt, a triumph of function over form. Android is the world's most versatile mobile operating system, the most tweakable, the most adaptable, and the most fully-featured. It just does more than any other comparable product out there. But if Android is a Leatherman, the iPhone is the basic Swiss Army Knife - compact, simple, iconic, and good enough for the vast majority of people, even if it does do a little less.

Building on that analogy, Android users, even die-hard fans, actually look at their phones more like tools.

Update: According to The Verge, HTC has indicated that it's "aware of the reports," and is currently investigating the situation. Stay tuned for further info.

Update 2: Turns out that HTC is ready to make good on this issue, but only by telling customers to return their chipped phone to the store from which it was purchased and get a replacement. If, however, you'd rather send it off to HTC to be repaired, that's always an option. Below is HTC's official statement on the matter.

HTC is committed to delivering a high quality product and great experience for all our customers.
