Latest Froyo Build For T-Mobile Nexus One Leaked (FRF72) – Now Available!

Good thing for our readers that I’m a night owl, and I happen to love my Nexus One, and love me some frozen yogurt. Especially together:

And now I have my T-Mobile Nexus One updated with the latest and greatest FRF72 build.

I just happened to be browsing a forum about the upcoming official Android 2.2 Froyo release when I see someone leak a URL for the FRF72 build that Google Employees were given a week ago. Someone at xda-developers.com seems to be the original source.

Here’s the URL for the upgrade, while it lasts:

Based on the filename, it appears to be an incremental build from FRF50, so you must already have FRF50 installed to use this new build.

EVO Nearly Matches Nexus One Sales Numbers, Ad Capitalization, in First Few Days of Release

Ad firm Chitika has run the numbers, and found that the HTC EVO accounts for 1.93% of android handsets, just days after the phone’s release. That may not seem too impressive at first sight, but keep in mind that:

1) The phone sold out nearly everywhere, right away. Personally, I went to 3 stores and called 2 more to try to find one on launch day, without luck. I managed to order one from Sprint, but within 2 days of launch they were reporting being sold out online as well. In other words, the sales numbers were limited by supply, not demand.

Google: No ETA For Official Froyo OTA

A few weeks ago, Froyo started to find its way onto the phones of a few lucky journalists and random twitter users, and then eventually into the hands of the hackers over at XDA-Developers.

At the time, speculation abounded as to whether or not this was the official OTA. It wasn’t until a few days later when we received word that this was actually a release candidate, intended for a small group of testers and not consumption by the general public.

Since that revelation, users have been anxiously awaiting an announcement from Google regarding the official, final OTA. When we quoted our inside source at Google who revealed to us that the leaked build was indeed a release candidate, they made sure to emphasize that a release candidate is usually close to the final version and that unless bugs are found, it may very well end up being the final release.

Nexus One is still alive and pretty much kicking, especially thanks to the community. Since Google won't push new features to it, the community has to.

First Cyanogen added support for 802.11n WiFi in CyanogenMod, and now about half an hour ago, an xda-developers forum member by the name of charnsingh_online announced that he made a patch for CyanogenMod which enabled 720p video recording in the Nexus One.

The only requirement - CyanogenMod version of at least CM5.0.8test3, which means - yes, you need a rooted N1 running CM and not the stock OS.

His solution doesn't yet work in Froyo, but expect support for that to come out shortly.

PSA: How To Push Links To Your Froyo Phone With Chrome Or Firefox

Our friends over at Engadget have published a kick ass guide on how to take advantage of Froyo’s cloud to device messenger capability. You may recall the demonstration during the Android keynote at Google I/O, where they pushed directions to their phone from Google Maps with the click of a button. Well, someone hacked together a quick app and accompanying Chrome and Firefox extensions that will allow you to do the same.

You’re not just limited to pushing directions though – as of right now you can also push URL’s and YouTube links. Every item you push will automatically open in its corresponding application – so directions open in Maps, URL’s in the browser, etc.

Nexus One Will Not Get Official FM Radio Support Any Time Soon - Google Cites The Custom ROM Community As Our Best Bet [Post Google I/O Coverage]

If you've been waiting for official FM radio support in your Nexus One - and I know there are hundreds of you, then you will have to keep waiting, possibly forever.

One thing is certain - the official Nexus One Froyo release will not include FM radio support, told me one of the core Android engineers at the Google I/O conference a couple of days ago.

I went to Android Office Hours where everyone had a chance to ask core developers anything they wanted (I managed to grab 2 Android dev books there too - awesome!). I was told that Google and HTC selected a chip that fit their needs, and it happened to support FM radio and Wireless N.

It looks like Google has started the rollout process of Froyo to the Nexus One. Go to your device's settings and have it check for updates - there is a chance that you can download it right now.

MG Siegler of TechCrunch has successfully performed the update after seeing an update notification on his Nexus One and snapped the photos below.

At the Google I/O conference, the only answer I could get from Android developers regarding Froyo release to the N1 was "soon". However, they hinted that it would *really* soon, and so I was very skeptical of baseless updates like this one claiming a June release date without a source to back it up.

Google is about as innovative as it gets. With the advent of the Android operating system, we knew a phone would follow...an official Google phone. It came, and it was called the Nexus One.

While it was certainly a hit, and the Android OS has taken off to new heights, the online storefront that Google created for the Nexus One was neither hit nor height.

Given that people like to use devices before they buy them, the online store was bound to fail compared to a retail launch. People want to touch the touchscreen and see the apps in motion. In other words, the online store can only go so far.

Upcoming Frozen Goodness

Folks, we have a Nexus One. We also have Froyo. In fact, we have the two mixed together in the most delicious frozen-yogurty Android 2.2 kind of way you can imagine.

Not much has been officially released by Google about Android 2.2 - probably less than any other release to date. We all have a hunch about some new features but Google wouldn't officially confirm or deny any of them, other than the one about Flash 10.1.

They're saving it for May 19th-20th, and we're OK with that.

However, one of our team members has been playing with a Nexus One running Froyo for about a week now, getting more and more visibly excited every day.
