Google Services Bug Causing Location Issues For HTC Owners, Google Working On A Fix

Sometimes, updates break things. That seems to be the case for some HTC owners who, upon receiving a silent update to the newest version of Google Play Services, are having trouble using apps that rely on location data. According to HTC phone users in this support thread, Google Now continually asks to turn Location Services on, location-dependent applications like Foursquare and WeatherBug don't function properly, and Maps is unable to lock onto a location.

The good news? Google's looking into the problem. The bad news? No ETA. And unfortunately, because Google Play Services updates in the background automatically, wiping data won't help.

HTC has come a long way since '97, when it was working on touch-based Windows CE devices. Over the last 15 years, the company has released many new technologies and new devices, including the Compaq iPAQ and a variety of other popular Pocket PCs. It released the world's first 3G Windows Mobile smartphone. The first commercially-available Android phone. The first Nexus phone (which, sadly, didn't make the cut in the video). In short, HTC has done a lot for the mobile industry, and it has released a video showing off a few of these things.

Of course, it all leads up to the crème de la crème: the HTC One.

The HTC One is undoubtedly HTC's best and most innovative phone to date. Amazon Wireless just dropped its price on Sprint's One to $79 for new accounts (which is just $20 less than Sprint's offering if you take advantage of the aforementioned number port-in bonus) and – the real deal here – $99 for upgrades.

Now that the big spring phone releases are out of the way, you can make an informed decision on any pending purchases. The HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 both have their strong points, and you can get a solid deal on both of them, provided you're flexible on carriers. Amazon has both currently listed for $129.99 with a 2-year contract.

The HTC One in question is the 32GB AT&T variant, and it's usually $199.99 (last on sale for $150). A $70 savings on a fairly new device is great, and it's impressive what HTC has done with its new flagship phone.

Sprint's version of the HTC One is about to receive a much-needed OTA update, albeit a relatively minor one, that promises to fix the rather annoying home and back button sensitivity issues that have been afflicting the handset. I commented on this issue in my review of the One, and while I called it minor then, the more I used the phone, the more annoying it become in certain situations - particularly when holding the phone while lying down.

The issue seemed to be that the touch targets for the capacitive buttons were set far too close to the display, and the pad of your finger would often need to hit the area between what you would expect to be the strike zone and the edge of the visible display on the phone in order to register a tap.

The HTC One is pretty great, and HTC has had no problem vividly illustrating its hardware features. Now they've moved on to the software in a pair of 30-second TV spots. The ads are all about BlinkFeed, HTC's proprietary social/news stream, and the centerpiece of the Sense 5 user interface. The commercials get right to the point, showing that other phones make you "dig" for information and content, while the mighty One with BlinkFeed puts everything you want right there on the home screen. Dirt literally falling out of inferior phones makes the point with all the subtlety of a thrown brick.
