Sprint Officially Confirms That The EVO 4G LTE Launch Is Delayed Due To US Customs, Provides Pre-Order Cancellation Options

We reported last night that, due to an ITC order on an Apple patent infringement claim, at least some of HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE smartphones had been halted at shipping ports by US Customs.

The implications of this for the EVO 4G LTE just got worse, as Sprint has been forced to concede that the planned May 18th launch will have to be delayed until the customs investigation is completed. Here's Sprint's full statement:

United States Customs Halts HTC One X And EVO 4G LTE Shipments At Ports Pending "Investigation" Of Apple Patent Claims

US Customs has halted at least some shipments of the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE (presumably at the Port of Los Angeles), as a result of an earlier ITC order won by Apple over a patent lawsuit for "data tapping" (context-sensitive text-based actions) in the browser and messaging apps on some HTC phones.

These features, HTC contends, have been removed from the One X and EVO 4G LTE, and HTC is "confident" that it is in compliance with the ruling:

Hello and welcome! Allow me to introduce you to Sprint's next big boy phone: (deep breath) the HTC Evo 4G LTE.

This is Sprint's version of the HTC One X. HTC's much publicized "One" branding strategy survived a grand total of two carriers in the US - Sprint kicked it to the curb in favor of the aforementioned alphabet-soup-style naming convention. Keep in mind the original Evo was actually called the "HTC Evo 4G," so you're going to need to be detail oriented when talking about the Evo line. But hey, considering this is the same marketing department that birthed the novella known as the "Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch," we actually got off pretty light.

Sprint's EVO 4G LTE Release Date Finally Official: May 18th 2012 For $199

The HTC EVO 4G LTE is probably the most anticipated phone to ever makes its way to the Now Network (except maybe that other phone), and it in just ten days, you'll be able to claim one as your own. That's right, Sprint finally announced the release date for the newest edition to the EVO line, and it will be hitting shelves on May 18th for $199 with a two-year agreement.

For anyone who hasn't already heard, the EVO LTE is the latest successor to Sprint's popular EVO line, and will be the third device to run on its upcoming LTE network.

Want to hear more about the EVO 4G LTE? Good! Because we have a release date for you! And if you don't like that one, we have another one. According to Wirefly's pre-order FAQ page, this slick beast will be unleashed on May 18th. Sprint's own pre-order confirmations seem to lend some credence to this idea, stating that pre-order will begin to ship as early as May 15th.

Sprint's promotional email also supports this, stating that the pre-order offer ends May 17th, which would make sense if the next day is launch day.

[Fail] Best Buy Thinks The HTC EVO LTE Is Quite The Phone, Lists Off-Contract Price at $100k

Historically, Best Buy hasn't been the most, shall we say, reliable company when it comes to... well, anything. The most recent display of typographical error on Best Buy's part comes from the pre-order page for the upcoming HTC EVO LTE. Looks like Best Buy thinks it's the phone of the year - it has the off-contract price listed as $100k. Ha!

While the $100k price tag may indeed be a humorous error, there is a silver lining: if you actually pre-order the phone from BB, you get a $50 gift card upon activation.

We already knew that Sprint's HTC One X-inspired EVO 4G LTE would be available for preorder on May 7th, but Sprint recently issued a friendly reminder to its customers, publishing a live countdown page which ends tomorrow morning at 6am PST and promises viewers a chance to "call dibs" on the latest addition to the carrier's "most adored family of smartphones." Starting tomorrow, the EVO 4G LTE can be preordered for $199 with a new two-year agreement or eligible upgrade.

[Video] HTC Helps Viewers "Get To Know" The EVO 4G LTE From Design To Manufacturing In New Video

In a fascinating new video titled "Get to know the HTC EVO 4G LTE," HTC explains the ins and outs of Sprint's One X variant, from the conceptualization of its design, to decisions surrounding build quality, materials, and a pretty interesting explanation of the new EVO's soft-touch unibody form.

Senior Director of Advanced Materials Chris Porter details the EVO's soft-touch feel in the video, explaining that the device has a "warm, velvety, soft-touch feel as opposed to a harder, rougher, cold metal feel." Porter explains that creating the effect involves sand/grit-blasting the device's frame, followed by a light chemical etching process to remove the sharp "peaks." The EVO's design also utilizes around 100 custom-designed machine cutters, used to create exactly the right geometry and feel for each device.
