For months now, users who wanted to root their Logitech Revue GoogleTV unit were either forced to use hardware modifications or do without. Now, though, Android hacker extraordinaire Dan Rosenberg has found a way to do it completely through software. There's only one problem: it's both extremely difficult and risky. Still, if you're up for a challenge, this one's for you.

This hack uses an exploit called nandpwn, which is explained better on GTVhacker than I could ever do:

A local privilege escalation exploit for the Logitech Revue that leverages the ability to map the hardware registers of the NAND flash controller in conjunction with a Linux kernel information leak to clobber kernel memory in a way that allows gaining privileges.

Done With This Post? Today, though, the platform is getting some love as Sony Google TV devices are getting a firmware update to version 2.1.1. Included in the update will be the ability play movies rented via Google Play (about time) as well as watching movies via youtube.com/movies.

Logitech's update, on the other hand, is less straightforward. The company has announced via its forums that the Revue will be getting updated to Honeycomb 3.2 beginning a couple of days ago and ending tomorrow, June 7th. Oddly, the company seems to have made no official announcement or change log anywhere else.

Done With This Post?

If Logitech's price drop on their debut Google TV box this July wasn't enough, those looking to get their hands on the Revue without spending much money now have a pretty nice opportunity thanks to Tiger Direct. The online electronics dealer is offering refurbished units for a paltry $79.99, with free shipping included if you buy this weekend.

For those unaware, the Revue is Logitech's sole Google TV device, meant to bring the Google TV experience to your HDTV by offering easy access to web and television content, as well as a host of specially-developed apps meant for use with Google's television venture (including Netflix).

Done With This Post?
We learned a few weeks ago that a software update would soon be rolling out to the Logitech Revue, finally bringing Honeycomb to the unit. That time has finally come; as posted on the official Logitech blog, the Android 3.1 update is now making its way to Revue units across the country.

Android 3.1 brings a lot of welcome features and enhancements to the Google TV box, including access to the Android Market, improved search and browsing capabilities, a simplified user interface, and improvements to the Logitech Media Player.

To receive the update, you need only ensure that your Revue is on and connected to the web - the update will be rolling out throughout the week, and you'll be prompted to install it once it's available on your device.

Done With This Post?

When I first picked up my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, I didn't see any reason to pick up a Bluetooth keyboard. After all, how could a keyboard improve my tablet experience? After finally giving in and trying out Logitech's Keyboard Case, I was convinced. Bluetooth keyboards seem to make tablets infinitely more productive, and make an extremely handy accessory. The only trouble is, they seem to be rather expensive. Luckily, Best Buy has Logitech's Bluetooth Keyboard for Android 3.0+ tablets on sale for just $39.99.

Logitech's keyboard, which comes with a handy carrying case/tablet stand, is normally priced at $69.99 ($63.99 over at Amazon), making Best Buy's price quite a bargain.

Done With This Post?
Today brings more good news for Google TV owners with the release of the cloud-powered Google Music app. As Jurek Foryciarz, Product Manager of Google TV puts it:

The app syncs with your Google Music account in the cloud, so there is no need to stream from a computer or download songs to the TV. Simply download the Google Music app for Google TV from Android Market, login with your account, and enjoy your entire music library through your HDTV and home theater system.

Google Music for Google TV plays in the background while you enjoy other apps on your Google TV. You can add a custom soundtrack to slideshows from the Photos app, you can enjoy your favorite tunes while surfing the web, or you can just add some mood music while you peruse the latest news headlines, all from the comfort of your couch.

Done With This Post? And, yes, said software update is exactly the one that was shown to us back at the end of October: the one that brings an updated, usable interface and - drumroll please - Android Market integration.

Indeed, as indicated in the above tweet from the official @GoogleTV Twitter account, the update will be rolling out in the next few weeks, just as promised.

Done With This Post?

Guerrino De Luca, CEO of Logitech, while speaking at the company’s Analyst and Investor Day yesterday, plainly delivered a statement that many of us could have seen coming, calling Logitech’s 2010 launch of the Revue set top box “a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature.” Further, De Luca made it clear that Logitech had “brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga,” and plans to let inventory run out this quarter, with no sequel in the works for the manufacturer’s first Google TV box.

De Luca confided that “operational miscues in EMEA” cost the company over $100M, and ascribed much of Logitech’s headache to executing “a full scale launch with a beta product,” implying that Google TV, as a product, was not – and perhaps is not – established or complete enough to make a launch on the scale of the Revue reasonable.

Done With This Post?
Before giving Logitech's Keyboard Case a go, I was skeptical about how useful a separate keyboard would be for my Galaxy Tab 10.1. My main concern about keyboards in general was portability - I picked up the Galaxy Tab 10.1 because of its slim design, easy portability, and Android functionality, so carrying around a bulky accessory was out of the question, as it seemed to defeat the purpose.

Logitech and Zagg have created perhaps the most elegant solution to this problem that I've seen yet with the Keyboard Case. It's not only a capable, useful keyboard, but also functions as a case, integrating nicely with the portability of the Tab itself.

Done With This Post? For those that don't know, Harmony is all about controlling your home theater setup with as little effort as possible - imagine a universal remote mashed up with a computer and you're getting there. A hundred bucks gets you a Wi-Fi equipped IR blaster box and an app. The box receives commands from your phone over the Wi-Fi connection, and can relay that to up to 8 IR devices in your home theater setup. The Wi-Fi connection means you don't need line of sight to control the TV anymore, so if you want to turn off the TV from the bathroom, you can do that.

Done With This Post?
